With Malaysia’s heat and humidity you run your aircon 6–10 hours a day. The wrong unit costs you RM 200–400 extra in electricity every year — this guide helps you pick the right type and size.

Five main types of air conditioner are used in Malaysian homes and offices. Each suits different spaces and budgets.
| Type | Best For | Unit Price (approx.) | Installation Cost | Pros / Cons |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wall-Mounted Split | Bedrooms, living rooms | RM 1,200–3,500 | RM 400–700 | Most common; quiet, energy-efficient — needs wall penetration |
| Ceiling Cassette | Open-plan living, meeting rooms | RM 2,800–6,000 | RM 800–1,500 | 360° airflow; hidden in ceiling — higher install cost, needs false ceiling |
| Floor-Standing (Console) | Showrooms, large living areas | RM 2,500–5,000 | RM 500–900 | No ceiling work needed; powerful — takes floor space |
| Ducted / Central | Whole-house or large office | RM 8,000–25,000+ | Included in above | Invisible; single outdoor unit — expensive, complex ductwork |
| Portable (No-Duct) | Temporary or rental use | RM 700–1,800 | None | No installation needed — noisy, less efficient, exhausts heat into room |
This is the most important decision for Malaysian households who run aircon daily.
Verdict: if you run aircon ≥4 hours/day — which is most Malaysian households — always buy inverter. Non-inverter makes sense only for a rarely-used guest room or a strict budget constraint.
| Feature | Non-Inverter | Inverter |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost (1.5 HP) | RM 900–1,500 | RM 1,500–2,500 |
| Monthly electricity (8 hr/day) | ≈ RM 80–120 | ≈ RM 45–70 |
| Noise | Louder (compressor cycling) | Quieter (variable speed) |
| Compressor lifespan | Shorter (frequent on/off) | Longer (smooth operation) |
| Best for | Rarely-used rooms | Daily use ≥4 hr/day |
Undersized aircon runs non-stop and never cools the room. Oversized aircon short-cycles, leaving humidity high. Use 60 BTU per sq ft as the base rule for Malaysian weather, then adjust:
| Horsepower (HP) | BTU/hr | Room Size (approx.) | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.0 HP | ≈ 9,000 BTU | Up to ≈ 150 sq ft (14 sq m) | Small bedroom |
| 1.5 HP | ≈ 12,000 BTU | 150–250 sq ft (14–23 sq m) | Master bedroom, study |
| 2.0 HP | ≈ 18,000 BTU | 250–350 sq ft (23–32 sq m) | Living room, open-plan kitchen |
| 2.5 HP | ≈ 24,000 BTU | 350–500 sq ft (32–46 sq m) | Large living room, small office |

Since 2019, Malaysia’s Energy Commission requires all new air conditioners to carry the star energy label (1–5 stars). More stars = lower electricity bill:
R32 refrigerant is now the standard in new Malaysian aircon (replacing R410A). R32 has a lower global warming potential (GWP 675 vs 2,088 for R410A), is more energy-efficient, and requires less refrigerant by volume. Check that your installer is R32-certified before topping up gas. See our aircon servicing cost guide → for gas top-up and chemical wash prices.
| Room / Situation | Recommended Type | HP | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bedroom (small, <150 sq ft) | Wall-mounted split inverter | 1.0 HP | Quiet operation important for sleep |
| Bedroom (master, 150–250 sq ft) | Wall-mounted split inverter | 1.5 HP | 5-star rating recommended |
| Living room (250–400 sq ft) | Wall-mounted split or ceiling cassette | 2.0–2.5 HP | Cassette for open-plan or no suitable wall |
| Open-plan living + kitchen | Ceiling cassette or 2 wall units | 2.5 HP per zone | 360° airflow covers irregular shapes better |
| Home office (small) | Wall-mounted split inverter | 1.0–1.5 HP | Run during work hours only; inverter saves well |
| Whole-house (terrace, 4-room) | Ducted / central | System-sized | Best aesthetics; plan at renovation stage |
| Temporary / rental unit | Portable | N/A | No installation; less efficient; stop-gap only |
Standard installation in Klang Valley typically includes: mounting the indoor and outdoor units, drilling through the wall, running refrigerant piping (up to 3 m included, RM 20–30/m extra beyond that), electrical wiring to the isolator, and pressure-testing the system. Typical costs:
