Doors and windows are among the most durable — and expensive — components of a home. Getting the material and type right for each location saves money on replacements and maintenance. This guide covers every common type found in Malaysian homes, with real Klang Valley price ranges. See also our full renovation cost guide →.
| Door type | Material | Best for | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solid timber | Meranti, teak or engineered timber | Main/front door, master bedroom | Premium, heavy, good sound insulation; can warp if poorly sealed |
| Hollow-core | Timber veneer skin over cardboard core | Interior bedroom & study doors | Lightweight and affordable; no soundproofing or security |
| WPC / fibreglass | Wood-plastic composite or fibreglass | Bathroom, utility, wet area | Water-resistant, warp-free — the right choice for wet zones |
| Aluminium frame + glass | Aluminium & glass | Balcony, patio, yard sliding door | Rust-free, low-maintenance, allows natural light |
| Glass sliding door | Aluminium frame + tempered glass | Living-to-balcony, yard | Maximises view and light; use laminated or tempered glass for safety |
| Window type | Opening | Best for | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Casement | Hinges on side, swings out | Bedroom, study, living | Good ventilation; can be opened at any angle; grille-compatible |
| Sliding | Panels slide horizontally | Anywhere space is limited | No outward protrusion; slightly less ventilation than casement |
| Louvre / jalousie | Horizontal slats tilt open | Kitchen, bathroom, service areas | Excellent ventilation; less secure; traditional in Malaysian terrace houses |
| Fixed / picture | Does not open | Views, stairwell, high positions | Best light ingress; no ventilation or access |
| Awning | Top-hinged, opens outward | Bathroom, laundry | Can stay open in light rain; good for small openings |
| Frame material | Pros | Cons | Common use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aluminium | Rust-free, strong, low-maintenance, wide colour range (powder-coat), slim sightlines | Conducts heat (though thermally broken versions exist) | Most common for windows & sliding doors in Malaysia |
| uPVC | Excellent thermal/acoustic insulation, zero maintenance, does not corrode or warp | Higher cost, limited colour, less common locally | Premium windows, high-rise condos |
| Timber | Warm look, good insulation | Needs sealing/painting, can warp in humidity, higher maintenance | Traditional & heritage properties, premium bespoke joinery |
Aluminium is the default choice for the vast majority of Malaysian homes because it is affordable, durable, rust-free and widely available with powder-coat finishes in any colour.
The glass in your doors and windows is as important as the frame. Key options:
See our glass types guide → for full safety specifications.
Security grilles on windows and doors remain common in landed Malaysian homes for theft deterrence. Key considerations:
| Item | Indicative range (Klang Valley) |
|---|---|
| Interior hollow-core door (supply & hang) | RM300–600 |
| Interior solid-core door (supply & hang) | RM600–1,200 |
| Main / solid timber front door (supply & install) | RM1,200–3,000+ |
| WPC / fibreglass bathroom door | RM400–900 |
| Aluminium casement window (per panel, standard size) | RM250–600 |
| Aluminium sliding window (per panel) | RM200–500 |
| Aluminium sliding door (per 2-panel set) | RM800–2,000 |
| uPVC casement window (per panel) | RM500–1,200 |
| Security grille (powder-coated mild steel, per window) | RM200–600 |
| Invisible / stainless mesh grille (per window) | RM500–1,200 |
In Klang Valley’s increasingly dense urban environment — MRT lines, flyovers, schools, mosques — acoustic performance of doors and windows is a real quality-of-life issue. Options to improve it:
| Upgrade | Benefit | Approximate cost premium |
|---|---|---|
| uPVC frame vs aluminium | Better acoustic seal; hollow-chamber frame absorbs vibration | +50–100% over aluminium |
| Laminated glass vs single-pane | PVB interlayer damps mid-frequency noise well | +30–50% on glass cost |
| Double-glazed IGU | Best acoustic and thermal; sealed air gap blocks all frequencies | +100–200% on window total |
| Solid timber or solid-core door vs hollow-core | Mass reduces sound transmission through doors | +50–100% on door cost |
| Brush seals & compression seals on door perimeter | Eliminates air gaps where sound leaks through | RM30–100 per door (minor) |
Door frames should be set plumb and level in the opening before the wall is plastered — correcting an out-of-square frame afterward is costly. Window frames must be sealed with a flexible sealant at the perimeter to prevent water ingress, one of the most common causes of wall dampness in Malaysian homes. Always confirm the glass specification: use tempered or laminated safety glass for any pane larger than about 0.5 m² or within 500 mm of the floor.
