Aircon BTU / HP
Sizing Calculator

Buying an air-conditioner? Find the right BTU and horsepower (HP) for your room size and sun exposure — so you don’t over- or under-size it.

Aircon size (BTU / HP) calculator

How it works

For Malaysia’s hot, humid climate we size at about 55 BTU per square foot, adjusting up for west-facing, top-floor or sun-exposed rooms. The result maps to the nearest standard unit (1.0, 1.5, 2.0 HP and up). An undersized unit runs constantly and wastes electricity; oversized cycles too fast and dehumidifies poorly. See servicing costs in our aircon servicing guide →.

Indicative — high ceilings, large glass and occupancy increase the load.

Common Questions

What size aircon do I need for my room?
About 55 BTU per square foot in Malaysia’s climate. As a rough guide: up to 150 sq ft ≈ 1.0 HP, 150–250 sq ft ≈ 1.5 HP, 250–350 sq ft ≈ 2.0 HP, and 350–550 sq ft (e.g. a 450 sq ft hall) ≈ 2.5 HP. This calculator maps your room to the right unit, and lets you bump it up for hot, west-facing or top-floor rooms.
What is BTU and HP in air-conditioners?
BTU measures cooling capacity; HP (horsepower) is the common Malaysian shorthand — roughly 1.0 HP ≈ 9,000 BTU, 1.5 HP ≈ 12,000 BTU, 2.0 HP ≈ 18,000 BTU.
Does sun exposure affect aircon size?
Yes. West-facing, top-floor or sun-exposed rooms gain more heat, so add about 10% to the BTU. This calculator includes a sun-exposure adjustment.
What happens if my aircon is the wrong size?
An undersized unit runs constantly and never cools properly, wasting electricity; an oversized one short-cycles and dehumidifies poorly. Correct sizing is more comfortable and efficient.
