Which colours make a bedroom restful and a living room look bigger, with combinations that work in Malaysian light.
📍 We serve KL, Selangor & Putrajaya.

For Malaysian bedrooms, soft and calm colours work best: sage and muted greens, dusty blue, warm grey, greige and gentle pastels such as blush or lilac. For living rooms, warm white, cream, greige and sand keep the space bright and make it look bigger, with one deeper accent such as sage, terracotta or navy. To make a living room look more spacious, keep walls and ceiling light and close in tone, and carry one colour through connected spaces. On ClickBina's guides repainting a standard bedroom is RM400 – RM700 and a living or dining room RM700 – RM1,500 (indicative 2026, Klang Valley).
A bedroom is used mostly in the evening and at night under lamps, so it needs colours that feel restful and look good in warm artificial light. A living room is used all day, often shares space with the dining area, and is where guests form their first impression, so it needs colours that stay bright, flatter the furniture and make the space feel generous.
The general rules for Malaysian homes, such as choosing for the light each room gets, the heat and the humidity, and checking undertones, are explained in ClickBina's house colour palette guide. This page goes room by room into specific colours and combinations.
| Colour family | Mood | Pairs well with | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sage and muted green | Calm, natural | Oak, white bedding, rattan | Very grey-greens can look dull under cool-white bulbs |
| Dusty or powder blue | Cool, restful | White, navy, light timber | Can feel cold in a room with little daylight |
| Warm grey and greige | Quiet, adaptable | Almost any furniture and fabric | Check the undertone in your own light |
| Blush and soft pink | Warm, gentle | Cream, brass, light wood | Pick a muted pink, not a candy pink, for adults |
| Soft lilac | Light, airy | White, grey, pale timber | Strong purple quickly overwhelms a small room |
| Warm white and cream | Bright, simple | Anything | Plain white can look stark; choose a soft, warm one |
Darker bedroom colours, such as deep green or navy, can feel cosy and hotel-like, but they suit a large bedroom with good daylight or one feature wall behind the bed better than all four walls of a small room.
Pastels are popular for bedrooms because they keep a room light while adding more personality than plain white. The trick is to choose pastels with a little grey in them, which look softer and more grown-up than bright ones.
Pastels show marks easily, so use a washable finish, particularly in children's rooms.
Master bedrooms usually suit quieter colours: greige, sage, dusty blue or a muted blush, with a deeper feature wall behind the bed if you want drama. Children's rooms can take brighter colours, but it is easier to keep most walls light and add colour on one wall, in furniture and in fabrics, which can change as the child grows. A scrubbable finish matters more than the colour in a young child's room.
Living rooms in Malaysian homes are often open to the dining area and kitchen, so the colour has to work across a bigger space and in changing daylight. Safe, flattering choices are warm white, cream, soft greige, sand and light taupe. They make timber floors and fabrics look warm and leave room for colour in cushions, art and a feature wall.
For more character, a muted green such as sage or olive, a soft terracotta or a deep navy works well on one wall, for example behind the TV or sofa.
| Base walls | Accent wall or feature | Furniture and fabrics |
|---|---|---|
| Warm white | Sage green | Oak, linen, rattan |
| Cream | Soft terracotta | Walnut, rust and mustard cushions |
| Greige | Navy | Light grey sofa, brass lamps |
| Sand | Olive | Natural timber, cream bouclé |
| Soft white | Charcoal | Black metal, white oak, leather |
| Pale grey | Dusty blue | White, light timber, grey fabrics |
Keep to three main colours: a base, an accent and a furniture tone. For painted shapes such as two-tone walls or colour blocks, see ClickBina's wall paint design ideas.
Bedrooms and living rooms are lit in opposite ways, so judge each colour in the light that room really gets. A bedroom is seen mostly at night under warm bedside lamps and a dimmed ceiling light, which pull colours towards yellow: a cool blue softens, a greige warms up and a pink can turn peachy. Pick bedroom colours in the evening, with the lamps you will use beside the bed switched on.
A living room is seen mostly by day, often with daylight from a sliding door or balcony on one side and a darker corner on the other. Look at the colour on the wall facing the window and on the wall beside it, because the same paint can look two shades apart across one room. If the living room also needs to feel calm at night, a dimmer or a few warm table lamps keep a light colour from looking flat and grey.
Colour and finish work together. For bedrooms, a matt or low-sheen finish looks soft and hides small wall flaws; for living rooms, a washable matt or low-sheen finish copes with hand marks. ClickBina's paint types guide explains the finishes, and notes that dark or strong colours may need an extra topcoat for even cover.
These figures are published on ClickBina's guides (indicative 2026, Klang Valley). A change of colour does not change the rate much, but moving between dark and light can add a coat:
