14 Layouts for Third Bedrooms & Box Rooms

Illustrative concept design: small bedroom with a low bed under a long oak wall ledge, a floating bedside shelf, a sage green lower wall and a full-height white wardrobe

In a small bedroom the design is mostly where three things go: the bed, the wardrobe and, if you need one, a desk. The usual Malaysian third bedroom or terrace middle room has one window on one wall and the door on another, so put the bed where it keeps one clear walkway, take the wardrobe all the way to the ceiling, and keep the floor clear with wall-mounted lights and shelves instead of bedside tables. Light colours and sliding doors do the rest. These 14 concept designs show layouts, built-in storage, light and colour moves and low-cost ideas. Use the filters below to narrow them by type or by home.

How to plan a small bedroom

Start with a measured drawing, not furniture shopping. Mark the window, the door swing, the aircon unit and every socket, then place the bed first, because it is the largest thing in the room. In most small bedrooms there are only two good bed positions: against the wall opposite the door, or pushed against a side wall to leave one walkway.

  • Bed first. Keep one clear path from the door to the window and the wardrobe.
  • Wardrobe to the ceiling. A full-height built-in wardrobe stores more and leaves no dusty gap on top.
  • Sliding or no doors. Swing doors need floor space in front of them; sliding doors and curtains do not.
  • Off the floor. Wall lights, floating shelves and a wall-mounted TV clear the floor around the bed.
  • One light palette. Light walls, light floor and light doors make the room read as one space.

If the room has to work as a study or a guest room too, decide that before any carpentry is drawn; the desk, the bed type and the storage all change with it.

Where the storage goes in a small room

The wardrobe is usually the biggest decision. A sliding wardrobe needs no door clearance, which is why it suits most small rooms; ClickBina's wardrobe size guide covers the depth hangers need. Where the bed has to sit in the middle of a wall, a corner wardrobe uses two walls, and mirror panels on the doors, as in the mirrored wardrobe guide, make the room look wider.

Space above and behind the bed is the next place to look: an overhead bridge cabinet, a headboard with shallow storage, or a raised platform with drawers underneath. If you want a bed that disappears in the daytime, a wall bed is a separate piece of joinery with its own fixing needs.

Practical limits in a small bedroom

  • Aircon and the bed. Do not put the bed directly in the cold air stream; plan the unit and the bed together.
  • Window access. The window must still open and be reachable for cleaning, and a ground-floor window may need a grille.
  • Ceiling. A small room has little headroom to spare; the bedroom ceiling guide suggests keeping it flat and light.
  • Raised platforms. Keep enough headroom above the mattress and add a guard rail; these suit children and teens rather than older parents.
  • A real bedroom. A box room needs a window, ventilation and power before it is used as a bedroom; see the box room conversion guide.

What a small bedroom makeover costs

ClickBina's bedroom design guide puts a bedroom refresh at around RM2,000 – RM5,000 and adding a built-in wardrobe at RM6,000 – RM15,000. The study desk guide lists a custom study desk and shelving unit at RM2,000 – RM5,000, with melamine built-ins at RM180 – RM350 per ft run.

For the bed wall, the bed frame guide puts laminate carpentry at RM280 – RM420 per ft run, and the curtain and blinds guide lists blackout roller blinds at RM180 – RM350 per window. A small room uses less of everything, but the price still depends on the run of carpentry and the fittings inside it. These are indicative Klang Valley figures for 2026.

Common Questions

Where should the bed go in a small bedroom?
Usually against the wall opposite the door, or pushed against a side wall so that one clear walkway runs from the door to the window and wardrobe. Keep it out of the aircon's direct air stream.
What wardrobe suits a small bedroom?
A full-height built-in wardrobe with sliding doors, because it needs no floor space for doors to swing open. A corner wardrobe or a curtain-fronted open rail are the alternatives.
Can a queen bed fit in a small bedroom?
Often, if it is pushed against one wall. You lose access from one side, but you keep a usable walkway and space for the wardrobe doors.
Which colours make a small bedroom look bigger?
Light walls, a light floor and light wardrobe doors in close tones. Save darker colours for one wall behind the bed.
How do I add a desk to a small bedroom?
Build it into the end of the wardrobe run so the carpentry reads as one piece, with a shelf above and sockets planned at desk height.
Is a box room big enough to be a bedroom?
It can sleep one person if it has a window, ventilation and power points. Keep the furniture to a single bed, wall shelves and hooks.
Are the designs on this page real ClickBina projects?
No. They are illustrative concept designs that show small-bedroom options. Your room is measured and quoted to its own walls, window and door.
