Illustrative concept design: long home pool with a timber-look deck, two loungers under a white umbrella, stone coping and palms beside a white house

The area around a home pool has to be safe for wet bare feet, cool enough to walk on at midday and easy to keep clean, while still looking good from the house. In Malaysia that means choosing deck and coping materials that grip and stay cool, planting that does not drop leaves into the water, shade for the hottest hours, and the practical extras: an outdoor shower, night lighting, a child-safety fence and a tidy home for the pump. These 13 concept designs show poolside ideas for terraces, semi-Ds and bungalows. Use the filters below to narrow them by style or home type.

How to plan the area around a home pool

Start with how the pool is used. A family pool with small children needs a fence, a clear view from the house and a surface that grips; a pool for evening swims needs lighting and somewhere to sit. Then look at the sun and the trees: where the deck gets the midday sun, and which plants will drop leaves into the water.

  • A surface that grips. Wet bare feet need a textured, outdoor-rated tile, a textured stone look or a grooved deck board.
  • Cool underfoot. Light colours stay cooler than dark ones; shade the part of the deck where people sit.
  • Planting set back. Keep a strip of paving between the water and the planting, and choose plants that drop little litter.
  • Water goes away from the pool. Paving should fall away from the pool to drains, so rain and dirt do not wash into the water.
  • Plan the extras. A shower, lights, a fence and the pump all need water, power or drainage planned before the paving goes down.

ClickBina's landscape design gallery covers the rest of the garden, and the pool types guide compares concrete, fibreglass and above-ground pools.

The area around the pool connects to the pool itself. The swimming pool waterproofing guide explains the coping joint and leaks, the pool pump and filter guide covers the equipment, and the pool cleaning guide covers keeping the water clear.

For the garden around it, see the bungalow garden landscape gallery and the outdoor lighting guide; for shade, the gazebo and pergola gallery shows covered structures.

Safety and practical limits around a pool

  • Child safety. A fence children cannot climb, a self-closing gate and a clear view from the house are sensible for any family pool.
  • Electrics near water. Pool lights, pumps and sockets near the water need outdoor-rated fittings and proper protection on their own circuits.
  • Roofed structures. A cabana or pergola with a roof can need council approval and must respect the required setbacks.
  • Drainage. Paving, turf and planters must drain away from the pool so rain and soil stay out of the water.
  • Access for service. Leave a way in for pool cleaning and equipment, and do not build over pipework.

What poolside works cost

For the surface, ClickBina's decking guide prices basic-to-mid WPC decking at RM30 – RM60 per sq ft installed, the travertine guide puts travertine-look porcelain at RM18 – RM35 per sq ft, and the artificial turf guide lists mid-range turf at RM7.50 – RM11.00 per sq ft supplied and laid (indicative Klang Valley ranges for 2026).

For the extras, the outdoor lighting guide lists a low-voltage LED step or wall light at RM80 – RM150 per fitting, and the fencing cost guide puts glass or feature fencing at RM500 – RM1,200 per metre. If the pool itself leaks, the pool waterproofing guide puts re-waterproofing at about RM15 – RM30 per sq ft of pool surface. Cabanas, water features and pump enclosures are quoted per job.

Common Questions

What is the best non-slip surface around a pool?
A textured, outdoor-rated tile or stone look rated for barefoot wet areas, or a grooved composite deck board. Polished tiles look smart but become slippery as soon as they are wet.
Does composite decking get hot around a pool?
Dark boards can get too hot for bare feet in the midday sun. Choose a light colour and shade the part of the deck where people sit, or use a light textured tile instead.
Which plants are good beside a pool?
Clumping palms and broad-leaf ground plants that drop little litter, set back behind a strip of paving. Keep fruit trees and heavy leaf-droppers away from the water.
Do I need a fence around a home pool?
For any family with small children it is sensible: a fence children cannot climb, a self-closing gate and a clear view from the house. Check your local rules too.
How much does a composite pool deck cost?
ClickBina's decking guide prices basic-to-mid WPC decking at RM30 – RM60 per sq ft installed (indicative Klang Valley, 2026).
Can I add an outdoor shower by the pool?
Yes, if a water point can reach it and its drain does not run into the pool. Plan the pipe and drain before the paving is laid.
Are the designs on this page real ClickBina projects?
No. They are illustrative concept designs that show poolside options. Your pool area is assessed and quoted to its own size, levels and condition.
