Awning Design Ideas
for Malaysian Homes

Browse 12 awning designs by support type, roofing material and home, then see what each one costs per metre run.

Illustrative concept design: bronze polycarbonate awning on a dark steel frame and slim posts over a back-yard outdoor kitchen with grey cabinets

Every awning design starts with two decisions: how it is held up, either fixed to the wall with brackets or rods and no posts (cantilever), or carried on posts at the outer edge, and what it is roofed with: polycarbonate, glass, metal deck, aluminium louvre or fabric. No-post awnings keep the floor clear but depend on a strong wall and suit shorter projections; posts let an awning reach further over a yard or driveway. Use the filters below to narrow the 12 concept designs by support, material or home type.

How to choose an awning design

Start with what the awning has to cover and what it can hang from. Measure how far out it needs to reach, check whether the wall above is solid concrete or brick, and note where the rainwater can go. Those three facts decide whether a no-post or a post-supported design is even possible.

  • No posts (cantilever) for windows, doors and short covers where you want a clear floor. The whole load goes into the wall through brackets, struts or rods.
  • With posts for back yards, drying yards, porch extensions and walkways, where the cover has to reach well away from the wall or there is no wall strong enough to carry it.
  • Pick the roofing by light and heat. Polycarbonate and glass let light through; metal deck and insulated panels give shade and quiet; louvres adjust; fabric rolls away.
  • Match the frame colour to the windows and grilles so the awning reads as part of the house, not an add-on.

Think about rain as much as sun. A Malaysian downpour arrives sideways, so a short awning over a window may need a deeper projection than you expect, and every awning needs a fall, a gutter or a drip edge that keeps water off the wall and the door.

Practical limits to check before you commit

  • Wall and anchors. How far a no-post awning can project, what anchors it needs and whether the wall can take it must be confirmed by the installer or an engineer for your wall. Hollow blocks, tiled facades and old render change the answer.
  • Approvals. A large or permanent awning on the front of a landed house, or one that extends a car porch, may need the council's permission; see the pelan setara guide for porch extensions. Condo and strata owners need management consent first.
  • Wall joint. The junction with the house wall is where most awnings leak; ask how it will be flashed, not only sealed.
  • Rain noise and heat. Bare metal is loud and hot; multiwall polycarbonate and insulated panels are quieter.
  • Drainage. Plan a fall, a gutter and a downpipe so water does not pour onto the wall, the door or the neighbour's side.

What these awning designs cost

Awnings are priced per metre run installed. ClickBina's awning cost guide puts polycarbonate at RM350 – RM700, retractable canvas at RM400 – RM900, corrugated zinc or metal at RM250 – RM500, aluminium louvre at RM800 – RM1,800 and tempered glass at RM900 – RM2,000 per metre run (indicative Klang Valley ranges for 2026). Where there is no wall to lean on at all, standalone posts add RM500 – RM2,000 each, plus their footings.

Flat ACP canopies, timber-look slat roofs and insulated sandwich-panel roofs are quoted per job. For a first figure for your own size and material, try the awning cost calculator.

Common Questions

What is the difference between a no-post and a post-supported awning?
A no-post (cantilever) awning is held only by brackets, struts or rods fixed into the wall, so the floor stays clear. A post-supported awning rests on posts at its outer edge, so it can reach further and puts less load on the wall.
How far can an awning reach without posts?
It depends on the material, the frame, the anchors and the wall it hangs from, so there is no safe single figure. The installer or an engineer should confirm it for your wall before you choose a no-post design.
Which awning material is the most popular in Malaysia?
Polycarbonate is the most common because it is light, lets daylight through and costs least per metre run after zinc. Metal deck is popular for drying yards, glass for entrances, and aluminium louvre for patios.
Which awning is quietest in heavy rain?
Insulated metal panels and multiwall polycarbonate are much quieter than a single bare metal sheet. Glass and louvres are also quieter than bare zinc.
Do I need approval to put up an awning?
Small awnings over windows are usually simple, but a large permanent awning, especially one that extends a car porch, may need council permission. Condo and strata owners need management consent before any change to the facade.
Are the designs on this page real ClickBina projects?
No. They are illustrative concept designs that show style options. Your awning is sized and quoted to your own wall, space and approval rules.
