Illustrative concept design: condo dining area with a long oak table in front of a full-height black-framed fluted glass partition

Fluted glass, also sold as reeded glass, has fine vertical ribs pressed into one face. The ribs bend light, so the glass stays bright while whatever is behind it turns into soft vertical streaks. That makes it a middle ground between clear glass, which shows everything, and frosted glass, which turns everything into an even haze. In Malaysian homes it turns up in doors (sliding, swing, pivot and folding), partitions (wet and dry kitchens, ensuites, studies), shower screens, windows and cabinet and wardrobe doors. Use the filters below to narrow the 13 concept designs by style or home type.

Where fluted glass works

Fluted glass earns its place wherever you want daylight to travel but do not want a clear view. The question to ask of every spot is how much privacy it really needs, and how often the glass will be touched, splashed or wiped.

  • Kitchens: a fluted partition between the dry and wet kitchen keeps the cooking area out of sight without making the dry kitchen dark. Glass cabinet fronts belong in the dry kitchen or on an island; the cabinet door styles guide keeps glass and fluted fronts away from the hob wall.
  • Bedrooms and ensuites: a fluted wall or door lets light into an ensuite that would otherwise be dark, and fluted wardrobe doors hide the clothes while keeping the front light.
  • Bathrooms: fluted shower screens and bathroom windows soften the view; they are not a full privacy screen at night.
  • Entrances and corridors: a fixed fluted screen beside the main door, or an internal window high in a corridor wall, borrows light without opening the room up.

Frames change the mood more than the glass does. Black frames read industrial or modern, brass and bronze read classic, and light timber reads Japandi. White frames disappear against white walls and suit small terrace houses.

Practical limits to check before you commit

  • Safety glass. In a door, a shower or anywhere a person could fall against it, the glass must be safety glass. The frosted film and frosted glass guide is clear that door and shower glass should be tempered, and the tempered glass breakage guide explains how it breaks and why.
  • Cleaning. The grooves hold dust, grease and limescale. Ask which face the ribs are on: a smooth face on the side that gets splashed is far easier to wipe.
  • Privacy. Fluted glass blurs rather than blocks. Close to the glass, shapes and colours still read, and at night a bright light behind someone shows a silhouette. Where you need full privacy, frosted glass or a blind does more.
  • Weight. Glass doors are heavy. Cabinet hinges, wardrobe tracks and pivot hardware all have to be rated for the door, which is why glass fronts cost more to fit than laminate ones.
  • Openings. An internal window or a wider opening means cutting a wall. Check what the wall carries before anything is cut.

How fluted glass is priced

There is no single per-square-foot rate for fluted glass. ClickBina's kitchen cabinet door guide notes that fluted facing is an extra on top of the door rate and is quoted on request, and the sliding door design gallery treats fluted sliders as priced per job, because the frame, the hardware and the glass vary so much.

What moves the price is the frame (aluminium, timber or brass-colour finish), the glass (fluted alone or fluted and tempered, and how large each pane is), the opening type (fixed, sliding, swing, folding or pivot) and any wall work around it. A like-for-like comparison names the glass type for every panel, not just “glass”. For the shower screen itself, the shower screen types guide compares framed, semi-frameless and frameless screens.

Common Questions

Is fluted glass the same as reeded glass?
In everyday use, yes. Both names describe glass with parallel ribs pressed into one face. Suppliers use the two names for slightly different rib widths, so ask to see a sample before you order.
Does fluted glass give full privacy?
No. It blurs what is behind it into vertical streaks, but close to the glass shapes and colours still read, and a bright light behind someone shows a silhouette at night. For full privacy, frosted glass or a blind does more.
Is fluted glass safe for a shower screen or a door?
Only as tempered safety glass. Any glass in a door, a shower or a spot where someone could fall against it should be safety glass, whatever its pattern.
Is fluted glass hard to clean?
The ribs hold dust, grease and limescale more than flat glass does. Wipe along the flutes, squeegee shower glass after use, and keep the smooth face on the side that gets splashed where you can.
Where should fluted glass not go in a kitchen?
Right next to the hob. Steam and grease settle in the grooves, so fluted cabinet doors and partitions suit the dry kitchen and island better than the cooking wall.
How is fluted glass priced?
Per job. The frame, the hardware, the opening type and the size of each pane all change the price, so ClickBina's guides do not give one per-square-foot rate for it.
Are the designs on this page real ClickBina projects?
No. They are illustrative concept designs that show style options. Your door, screen or cabinet is measured and quoted on its own size, frame and glass.
