Illustrative concept design: industrial u-shaped kitchen with charcoal cabinets, concrete-look worktop, white subway tiles, black open shelves, track spotlights and black grid windows

An industrial kitchen borrows the look of a workshop: dark slab doors, black metal, concrete-look or steel surfaces and visible lighting. In a Malaysian home the trick is balance. Our heat and strong daylight can make a dark, raw kitchen feel like a grey box, so keep the walls or wall cabinets light, use warm light, and let the black steel be the accent rather than the whole room. The wet kitchen is where industrial finishes such as stainless steel and dark grout actually earn their keep. These 13 concept designs show dark doors, open steel shelving, surfaces and the wet kitchen. Use the filters to narrow them by idea or by home.

The elements of an industrial kitchen

The kitchen styles guide gives industrial kitchens one section: dark slab doors, black bar handles, open steel shelving and a concrete-look or stainless worktop. Each of those choices has a practical side in a Malaysian kitchen, and that is what this page covers.

  • Doors. Charcoal, slate or deep green-grey slab fronts in a matt finish.
  • Metal. Black powder-coated steel for shelves, frames, handles and the partition.
  • Surfaces. Concrete-look worktops, cement-look tiles, brick-look tiles or stainless steel.
  • Lighting. Visible fittings such as track spotlights, cage pendants or bare bulbs.
  • Balance. Light walls, light wall cabinets or strong daylight to stop the room feeling heavy.

For the rest of the house, the industrial interior design guide explains how the style carries into living rooms and bedrooms.

Making industrial work in a hot, bright climate

Industrial interiors come from cold, grey cities, and a straight copy can feel heavy in Malaysia. Keep the dark finish below the worktop and the light finish above it, or keep the walls white so the black steel reads as an outline. Warm white light (not cold daylight bulbs) stops dark doors looking dull in the evening.

Grout is part of the look: dark grout between white subway tiles is a classic industrial detail and hides oil better than white grout. The kitchen wall tile guide covers tile sizes, grout types and where each tile suits.

The industrial wet kitchen

The wet kitchen is where industrial finishes are most at home. A stainless steel worktop and open stainless undershelf, a strong black hood over the wok burner and white tiles with dark grout to the ceiling are tough and easy to scrub. The stainless steel cabinet guide compares stainless with other wet-kitchen builds.

Between the two kitchens, a black steel-framed grid partition is the hero piece of the style: it keeps smoke back while the light still passes through. It works only with a ducted hood strong enough for wok cooking, and condo managements may need to approve it.

Common industrial kitchen mistakes

  • All dark, no light. A dark kitchen without light walls or daylight feels small and hot.
  • Too many open shelves. One or two shelves look styled; a whole wall collects oil and dust.
  • Mixed metals. Black, chrome and brass together look unplanned; keep to black.
  • Slippery floors. A polished cement look is slippery when wet; see the kitchen floor tile guide for anti-slip options.
  • Exposed ducts with bends. A visible duct must run short and straight to work well.

What an industrial kitchen costs

Industrial is a look carried by finishes, so price the finishes. ClickBina's kitchen styles guide lists laminate doors at RM280 – RM420 and acrylic or sprayed doors at RM380 – RM600 per foot run; most dark matt slab doors sit in the laminate band. The countertop guide puts granite at RM200 – RM500 and quartz at RM250 – RM600 per foot run.

For the wet kitchen, the stainless cabinet guide puts a stainless steel cabinet at RM650 – RM1,000 per foot run, worktop excluded, while the kitchen layout guide lists a moisture-resistant plywood box with laminate doors at RM350 – RM600. Wall tiles run from RM10 – RM18 per sq ft for ceramic to RM18 – RM35 for porcelain, and floor tiling is RM12 – RM30 per sq ft supplied and laid. A fixed base-cabinet island with no plumbing or electrical is RM5,000 – RM15,000. These are indicative Klang Valley figures for 2026.

Common Questions

What makes a kitchen industrial?
Dark slab doors, black metal shelves and frames, concrete-look, brick-look or steel surfaces and visible lighting such as track spotlights.
Will an industrial kitchen feel too dark in Malaysia?
It can. Keep the walls or wall cabinets light, keep the dark colour below the worktop and use warm white lighting.
Is stainless steel good for a wet kitchen?
Yes. It is waterproof and easy to scrub, though brushed steel shows scratches and water spots over time.
Are open steel shelves practical?
On a short wall, holding plates and bowls used every day. Keep them away from the hob, where oil settles quickly.
What floor suits an industrial kitchen?
Large cement-look porcelain tiles, with an anti-slip finish on the wet kitchen side.
Can I make an industrial kitchen softer?
Yes. Use oak-look doors with black handles, one black steel shelf unit and warm pendant lights.
Are the designs on this page real ClickBina projects?
No. They are illustrative concept designs that show industrial kitchen options. Your kitchen is measured and quoted to its own walls and appliances.
