Bar Counter Design
Ideas for Malaysian Homes

Browse 13 home bar counter and bar cabinet looks by style and home, then check the heights, the worktop choices and the per-foot price.

Illustrative concept design: condo kitchen with a white quartz island bar, two oak stools, sage-grey cabinets and brass pendant lights

A home bar counter in Malaysia is usually one of four things: a breakfast bar running off the kitchen or an island, a peninsula that separates the dry kitchen from the dining area or the wet kitchen, a wet bar with its own small sink in the living or dining area, or a built-in bar or coffee cabinet against a wall. What makes one comfortable is not the look but the height, the knee space under the worktop and the width allowed for each seat. Use the filters below to narrow the 13 concept designs by style or home type, then read the sizing and cost notes that follow.

Bar counter types for Malaysian homes

Most Malaysian homes do not have room for a separate bar, so the bar counter usually borrows space from the kitchen. In a condo it tends to be a short breakfast bar or a peninsula at the end of the kitchen run; in a terrace or semi-D it often becomes the divider between the dry kitchen and the wet kitchen behind it; and in a larger home it can be an island with seats along one side or a wet bar in the dining area.

  • Breakfast bar: a short worktop off the kitchen or island with two or three stools.
  • Peninsula: a run that projects from one wall, open on three sides, with seats on the outside.
  • Raised ledge: a second, higher tier along the back of a worktop that hides kitchen clutter.
  • Wall or window ledge: a fixed shelf-style counter for the smallest condos.
  • Bar or coffee cabinet: built-in base and wall cabinets with a worktop, open shelves or a glass rack.
  • Wet bar: any of the above with a small sink, which needs water and a drain.

Heights, seats and space

ClickBina's bar counter cost and sizing guide reads the NKBA kitchen planning guidelines, which publish three seating-surface heights — 30 in, 36 in and 42 in — and 24 in of width for each seated diner. On that basis a 6-foot counter seats three people comfortably. The guidelines publish knee space, not an overhang, so brief the clear space under the worktop and let the carpenter decide how to create it.

Planning checklist

  • Brief the knee space, not the overhang. How the space is made — a projecting top, a recessed cabinet or a cantilever — is the carpenter's call.
  • Support the overhang. A long projecting stone top needs brackets, legs or corbels; thin slabs need more support than thick ones.
  • Power and light. Plan sockets for a kettle or blender, and pendants or an LED strip before the worktop is templated.
  • Water. A wet bar needs a water point and a drain route; check this first in a condo.
  • Walkways. Leave room to pass behind seated diners, especially where two walkways meet.
  • Stools last. Buy stools after the counter height is fixed, not before.

What a bar counter costs

The bar counter cost guide prices a bar counter as two separate rates (indicative Klang Valley ranges for 2026). The carcass — the cabinet body, doors, drawers and installation — is RM350 – RM600 per ft run. The worktop is added on top: quartz at RM250 – RM600 per ft run, or sintered stone at RM400 – RM900 per ft run. ClickBina's granite price guide puts a granite countertop at RM200 – RM500 per foot run.

Waterfall ends, curved or fluted fronts, timber slats, a raised second tier, a sink and its plumbing, sockets, LED lighting and the stools are not in those rates, so ask for each one as its own line on the quote.

Common Questions

What is the standard bar counter height?
The NKBA planning guidelines read for ClickBina's sizing guide publish three seating-surface heights: 30 in, 36 in and 42 in. Most kitchen bars sit at worktop height, 36 in; a raised bar ledge sits at 42 in and needs tall stools.
How many stools fit on a bar counter?
Allow 24 in of width per seated diner. A 6-foot counter seats three; squeezing in more makes every seat cramped.
How much does a bar counter cost in Malaysia?
ClickBina's bar counter guide prices the carcass at RM350 to RM600 per ft run and the worktop separately, for example quartz at RM250 to RM600 per ft run (indicative Klang Valley ranges for 2026). Sinks, lighting and stools are extra.
Which worktop is best for a bar counter?
Quartz is the most common choice for looks and easy cleaning. Sintered stone and granite take heat better, and timber feels warmer but needs a sealed finish. Matching the main kitchen worktop usually looks calmest.
Can a bar counter replace a dining table in a condo?
In a small condo, a breakfast bar or window ledge can do the job for one or two people. For family meals, a dining-height counter with ordinary chairs is more comfortable than tall stools.
Does a wet bar need plumbing?
Yes. A sink needs a water supply and a drain with enough fall. In a condo, check where the nearest pipes run before you fix the bar's position.
Are the designs on this page real ClickBina projects?
No. They are illustrative concept designs that show style options. Your bar counter is measured and quoted on its own size, worktop and fittings.
