12 Makeovers for an Existing Bungalow

Browse 12 ways to give an existing single- or double-storey bungalow a new face, then see what each change involves and which ones need approval.

📍 We serve KL, Selangor & Putrajaya.

Illustrative concept design: double-storey detached house with white render, a stone and timber-look feature wall, a glass balcony and a closed charcoal slat gate

A detached bungalow is the one Malaysian house where all four sides, the roof and the boundary wall are yours to redesign: there is no twin and no terrace row to match. That freedom is also the cost driver, because every change covers more wall, more roof edge and more access than on a terrace or semi-D. This gallery is about making over a bungalow that already stands: a new roof line or parapet, cladding, a verandah, new windows and gate, lighting, or a careful restore of an older house. Changes to the facade, roof line or boundary wall beyond the approved design need council approval. Use the style filter to narrow the 12 concept designs below.

How to choose a bungalow makeover

Start from the house you have. A bungalow already has an approved outline, a roof form and a boundary wall, and most makeovers keep that outline and change what sits on it: the colours, cladding, windows, fascia, gate and lighting. The bigger moves, such as a parapet, a verandah, a roof light or a glass stair tower, change the outline itself and turn a cosmetic job into an approval job.

  • Decide which side is the front. On a corner or a large plot the side facing the garden may matter more than the street side.
  • Pick one lead idea. A stone entrance, a dark roof or a slatted upper floor; let the rest stay quiet.
  • Treat the roof as part of the facade. On a bungalow the roof is often half of what you see from the gate.
  • Design the wall and gate with the house. They are the first thing seen and are easy to leave out of the plan.
  • Fix before you finish. Leaks, rotten fascia and cracks come first; cladding and paint come last.

This gallery is about the whole outside of a bungalow. Each part has its own gallery or guide: the house exterior design gallery for terrace and semi-D fronts too, the house roof design gallery for roof forms and colours, the main gate design gallery for gates and boundary walls, and the exterior cladding guide for WPC, fibre cement and ACP boards.

Inside, the semi-D and bungalow interior design guide covers living halls, kitchens and bedrooms for larger landed homes, so the outside and inside can be planned as one job.

Approvals and checks before you start

  • Council approval. The renovation permit guide lists changing the building facade, roof line, roof pitch or boundary wall beyond the approved design as an external alteration that needs approval. Repainting is usually exempt.
  • Makeover, not a new design. ClickBina renovates existing houses. A new-build bungalow or a full redesign of the structure is architect work and is not what this gallery shows.
  • Cladding is not waterproofing. The exterior cladding guide explains that cladding shields the face of a wall but does not stop leaks; fix the wall first.
  • Old timber. Fascia boards, trims and verandah posts on older bungalows may hide rot or termites; the fascia and soffit guide explains what to check before replacing.
  • Heat. Dark roofs and large west-facing glass absorb more heat; plan insulation and shading with the look.

What a bungalow facade makeover costs

ClickBina's exterior repaint guide puts an exterior repaint of a semi-D at RM6,000 – RM12,000, with scaffold or rope access adding RM800 – RM2,500 (indicative Klang Valley ranges for 2026). A detached bungalow has four exposed sides, so expect its repaint to sit above the semi-D range rather than inside it. The fascia guide lists repairing rotted or cracked fascia and soffit boards at RM800 – RM3,500.

Cladding, verandahs, parapets, glass towers, gates and lighting are quoted per job, because the wall area, structure, product and approvals differ from house to house. Ask for every item to be priced separately so you can phase the makeover: repairs and fascia first, then paint and cladding, then the gate and lighting.

Common Questions

Do I need council approval to change my bungalow's facade?
Repainting is usually exempt. Changing the facade, roof line, roof pitch or boundary wall beyond the approved design is an external alteration that needs council approval, and a gated scheme may add its own rules.
Can I change a pitched roof to a modern flat-roof look?
A parapet wall in front of the existing roof can give a flat-roof look from the street, but it changes the roof line, so it needs approval, and the roof drainage behind the parapet has to be planned properly.
What is the cheapest way to modernise an old bungalow?
A new colour scheme over properly prepared walls, new fascia and gutters in a dark colour, and new window frames. These change the look without changing the outline of the house.
Does ClickBina design new bungalows?
No. ClickBina renovates existing houses. A new-build bungalow is architect work; this gallery shows makeovers of a bungalow that already stands.
Will cladding stop my bungalow wall from leaking?
No. Cladding changes the look and shields the face of the wall, but it is not waterproofing. Fix leaks and growing cracks first.
Why does a bungalow makeover cost more than a terrace?
A bungalow has four exposed sides, a longer roof edge and often more access work, so paint, fascia, gutters and scaffold all cover more length and area.
Are the designs on this page real ClickBina projects?
No. They are illustrative concept designs that show makeover options. Your house is assessed and quoted to its own walls, roof, access and council rules.
