Illustrative concept design: semi-D dry kitchen with an oak and white L-run, a long garden window and three black pendants

A semi-D or bungalow usually has room for two kitchens: a dry show kitchen that opens to the family hall, and a wet kitchen with a yard behind it for heavy cooking. That space changes the design brief. The show kitchen can have a long garden window, a pantry between the two kitchens, a tall appliance wall, a breakfast nook or doors to a side patio, and two people can cook at once. These 12 concept designs show modern, contemporary, classic, Scandinavian, Japandi, tropical and dark-timber ideas for the dry kitchen. The wet kitchen and its costs are covered in the wet and dry kitchen guides linked below.

How to plan a semi-D or bungalow kitchen

Start with the split. Decide what happens in the dry show kitchen and what happens in the wet kitchen, then plan each to its job. In most Malaysian semi-Ds and bungalows the dry kitchen faces the family hall and the garden, and the wet kitchen sits behind it next to the yard, the gas and the drains.

  • Show kitchen: light cooking, coffee and breakfast, storage that looks like joinery, a view to the garden.
  • Wet kitchen: wok cooking, washing and prep, tough surfaces and a strong hood; see the wet and dry kitchen guides.
  • Between them: a walk-through pantry or a hidden door, so the show kitchen stays tidy.
  • Windows on the side: semi-Ds have one free side and bungalows have four; put the sink or a long counter where the view is.

Then choose the style. A big kitchen can take a darker scheme or two tones; a narrower one stays light.

This gallery covers the dry show kitchen. For the wet kitchen, see wet kitchen vs dry kitchen and the dry and wet kitchen cost guide. For storage, see the pantry cabinet gallery, and for more styles the kitchen design gallery.

The semi-D and bungalow interior design guide covers how the kitchens fit with the living hall, the staircase and the bedrooms in a larger landed house.

Checks before you renovate

  • New openings. Opening a wall to the patio or between the kitchens is structural; get an engineer to check and ask whether the council needs to approve it.
  • Extensions. Building a new wet kitchen out into the yard adds structure; ClickBina's dry and wet kitchen cost guide lists a purpose-built rear extension for a semi-D, bungalow or link house as needing local authority approval.
  • Gas and plumbing. Moving the hob, sinks or gas point needs the right trades and may need longer pipe runs.
  • Ventilation. An open show kitchen still needs a proper hood; keep heavy frying in the wet kitchen.
  • Sun. A west-facing garden window brings heat in the afternoon; plan shading or glass with it.

What a semi-D or bungalow kitchen costs

ClickBina's kitchen design guide puts a large semi-D or bungalow kitchen with an island at RM35,000 – RM70,000+, and prices cabinet doors per running ft: laminate or HPL at RM280 – RM420, acrylic or PU spray at RM380 – RM600, and glass or wood veneer at RM500 – RM750. The dry and wet kitchen cost guide puts a purpose-built rear extension for a semi-D, bungalow or link house at RM45,000 – RM80,000+ (indicative Klang Valley ranges for 2026).

Ask for the dry kitchen, wet kitchen, pantry and any structural work to be quoted separately, so you can phase them.

Common Questions

Do I need both a wet and a dry kitchen in a semi-D?
Most families who cook Malaysian food often do. The dry show kitchen stays clean and open to the hall, and the wet kitchen behind it takes the smoke, oil and washing.
Where should the sink go in a semi-D kitchen?
Under a window on the free side of the house if the drains allow it. A long sink counter facing the garden is the classic semi-D layout.
How much does a bungalow kitchen cost?
ClickBina's kitchen design guide puts a large semi-D or bungalow kitchen with an island at RM35,000 – RM70,000+, depending on the cabinet finish, worktop and appliances.
Can I open my kitchen to the garden or patio?
Yes, with folding or sliding glass doors, but a new opening in an outside wall is structural and may need approval. Have an engineer check before you plan around it.
What is a walk-through pantry?
A small room or corridor lined with open shelves between the dry and wet kitchens. It keeps dry goods and appliances out of the show kitchen.
Can two people cook at once in a semi-D kitchen?
Yes, with two work zones on facing runs, each with its own sink, and a walkway wide enough to pass.
Are the designs on this page real ClickBina projects?
No. They are illustrative concept designs that show kitchen options for semi-Ds and bungalows. Your kitchen is assessed and quoted to its own layout, plumbing and gas points.
