Arch Design Ideas
Doors, Doorways & Niches for Malaysian Homes

Browse 14 arch designs by style and home type, from a simple arched doorway to arched doors, niches, mirrors and rounded walls, then see how each is built.

Illustrative concept design: large round arch in a cream wall framing a dining area with a timber table, brick-tiled niche and white wardrobe

Arch design in a home usually means one of five things: an arched doorway with no door, an arched door made to fit a round-top frame, an arched niche for display or storage, an arched mirror or headboard that gives the curve without touching the wall, or a curved wall end. The first three change the wall itself, so the wall type decides what is possible; the last two are add-ons that suit any home, including rented condos. Use the filters below to narrow the 14 concept designs by style or home type.

Where an arch works in a Malaysian home

Arches have become the most requested curve in Klang Valley renovations because they soften a room without adding clutter. They work best as one repeated idea rather than curves everywhere: an arched doorway between the living and dining areas, a matching niche nearby, perhaps an arched mirror upstairs.

  • Between living and dining: the classic place for an arched doorway in a terrace or semi-D, where a solid partition already divides the two spaces.
  • Into the kitchen: a wide, shallow arch keeps the kitchen semi-open while hiding the worktop clutter from the dining table.
  • Bedrooms: arched wardrobe bays, upholstered arch headboards and full-length arched mirrors bring the shape in without any wall work.
  • Bathrooms: an arched mirror over the vanity or an arched shower niche is the easiest way to add the look.
  • Foyers: an arched alcove with a bench turns a blank entrance wall into a place to sit and put on shoes.

In a condo, keep to arches that do not cut structure: mirrors, headboards, niches in a false wall and arched joinery. In a landed home, a new arched opening in a brick partition is often possible once the wall has been checked.

How an arch is built

A new arched doorway starts the same way as any new door opening. ClickBina's new door opening guide sets out the order: confirm the wall is a non-structural brick partition, hack the opening, put a lintel across the top and make good the edges. The arch is then formed inside that opening with a template, a frame and plaster or bent board, so the curve sits under the lintel rather than replacing it.

Load-bearing walls are a different job. The wall hacking guide is clear that an opening in a structural wall needs drawings from a professional engineer and a beam designed for the load, and the lintel guide explains why no opening should be left without something carrying the wall above it. Many condo walls around kitchens and bathrooms are reinforced concrete, which is why condo arches are usually niches, joinery and mirrors.

Niches are normally built into a false wall rather than cut deep into the existing one, because the existing wall may hide pipes or cables. Arched doors are made to measure: the opening, the frame and the leaf all follow one template, so the door is ordered only after the arch is formed and checked.

Getting the finish right

  • One radius. Repeat the same curve on every arch in the house, and make both faces of a doorway match.
  • Smooth skim. Light running along a curve shows every ripple, so a curved surface needs the most careful skim coat and a matt paint; the curved ceiling guide explains the same rule overhead.
  • Edges and floors. Floor tiles or planks from each room should meet in a neat line under the arch, and skirting returns into the reveals.
  • Finish choice. Plain paint is the safest choice; a mottled limewash-look finish suits Mediterranean arches but is a craft finish, so ask for a sample board first.
  • Approval. Condo managements usually want a renovation application before any hacking, and structural openings need an engineer's drawings.

What these arch designs cost

There is no single price for an arch, because the wall work, the curve and the finish are separate lines. ClickBina's new door opening guide prices the opening in a brick partition (indicative Klang Valley ranges for 2026): hacking RM10 – RM25 per sq ft, an RC lintel RM300 – RM800 per opening and make-good after hacking RM800 – RM2,500 per opening. Forming the arch itself is quoted on top of that, from your drawing.

Add-on arches are priced like the joinery or tiling they belong to. The shower niche guide lists mosaic tiling, niche and border work at RM20 – RM45 per sq ft; the custom bed frame guide puts laminate headboard joinery at RM280 – RM420 per ft run; and a built-in wardrobe runs about RM180 – RM600 per foot run depending on material. Hanging a single mirror is RM40 – RM80 per piece, with the arched mirror itself extra. Arched doors are made to measure and are quoted per door.

Common Questions

Can I make an arch in my existing doorway?
Often, yes. An existing rectangular opening in a brick partition can usually be given an arched top formed in plaster or board under the existing lintel. A wider or taller opening means hacking and a new lintel, so the wall type is checked first.
Can I hack an arch into a condo wall?
Only if the wall is a non-structural partition and management approves the work. Many condo walls are reinforced concrete and cannot be cut, so condo owners usually get the look with niches in a false wall, arched joinery and arched mirrors.
Is an arched door more expensive than a normal door?
Yes. The leaf and frame have to be made to the curve rather than bought in a standard size, and the opening must be formed to the same template. It is quoted per door once the arch is set out.
Do arches suit a small condo?
Yes, if they are kept simple: a tall arched mirror, an arched headboard or a pair of slim niches add the curve without taking floor space. Avoid more than one or two arch sizes in a small home.
How do I keep an arch looking neat?
Use the same radius for every arch, ask for a smooth skim coat and a matt paint, and check the curve under side light before painting. Floors and skirting should follow the opening cleanly.
Is an arched doorway the same job as an arched ceiling?
No. A doorway is wall work: hacking, a lintel and a plastered curve. An arched or domed ceiling is suspended ceiling work, covered in ClickBina's curved ceiling guide.
Are the designs on this page real ClickBina projects?
No. They are illustrative concept designs that show style options. Your arch is measured and quoted on your own wall, opening size and finish.
