A patio is the paved sitting area behind or beside a landed house, usually reached from the living room or kitchen. In Malaysia it has to cope with strong sun, heavy rain and wet feet, so the choices that matter most are covered or open, a floor that grips when wet and drains properly, and seating that can stay outside. These 13 concept designs show back and side patios for terraces, semi-Ds and bungalows in modern, tropical and rustic styles, both covered and open to the sky. Use the filters below to narrow them by style, covered or open, or home type.

How to plan a patio in Malaysia

Decide first how you will use it and when. A patio for breakfast and evening drinks needs shade, a fan and lights; a patio for the children and the barbecue needs space and a floor that can be hosed down. Then check the levels: where rain falls, where it runs and where it leaves the yard.

  • Covered or open. A covered patio is usable in rain and midday sun. An open patio is cheaper but only comfortable early, late and under trees or an umbrella.
  • Floor that grips. Outdoor floors get wet daily. Choose textured, outdoor-rated tiles, pavers or brick rather than polished tiles.
  • Falls and drains. Paving should fall gently away from the house to a drain or a planted edge, never back toward the door.
  • Seats that live outside. Built-in masonry benches, aluminium and teak furniture, and quick-drying outdoor cushions survive the weather best.
  • Connect to the house. Wide doors and level floors make the patio feel like part of the living room.

ClickBina's landscape design gallery covers the garden around the patio, and the gazebo and pergola gallery covers stand-alone shade structures.

A patio connects to several other jobs. The bi-fold and sliding glass door guide covers the opening from the living room, the outdoor kitchen and BBQ area guide covers cooking outside, and the outdoor and garden lighting guide covers fittings and sensors.

For the floor, see the anti-slip tile guide and the interlocking paver cost guide; for a yard that floods, the garden drainage guide explains falls and French drains.

Rules and practical limits before you build a patio

  • Roofing over a patio. A new roof or a large awning over the yard can need council approval and must not block required open space; check before you build.
  • Drainage. Every new hard surface sends more water somewhere. Plan the falls and the outlet first, or the patio will pond and push water toward the house.
  • Shared walls. Screens, planters and benches on a boundary wall involve the neighbour; agree them first and fix into your own side.
  • Electrics outside. Fans, lights and sockets on a patio need outdoor-rated fittings and protection.
  • Gated schemes. Some gated and guarded estates control what can be built in the yard; ask the management.

What a patio costs

Floors have published rates. ClickBina's anti-slip tile guide puts porcelain at RM18 – RM35 per sq ft and homogeneous tiles at RM15 – RM30 per sq ft supplied and laid, plus RM3 – RM6 per sq ft to hack out old tiles, and the paver guide lists a plain concrete paving slab at RM4 – RM8 per sq ft (indicative Klang Valley ranges for 2026).

For the extras, the outdoor lighting guide lists a low-voltage LED step or wall light at RM80 – RM150 per fitting and a new wiring point at RM120 – RM250, and the landscape design guide puts drip irrigation for planting beds in a medium garden at RM3,000 – RM8,000. Built-in benches, planters, screens and covers are quoted per job.

Common Questions

What is the safest floor for a patio in Malaysia?
A textured, outdoor-rated tile or a paver that grips when wet. Polished tiles look smart but turn slippery after rain, which matters most near the back door and steps.
Should my patio be covered?
If you want to use it in the rain and at midday, yes. A covered patio with a fan is usable most of the day; an open patio is cheaper but only comfortable early, late or under trees.
Do I need approval to roof over my patio?
A new roof or a large awning over the yard can need council approval and must respect required open space. Check with your council, and the management in a gated scheme, before building.
How much does it cost to tile a patio?
ClickBina's anti-slip tile guide puts porcelain at RM18 – RM35 per sq ft supplied and laid (indicative Klang Valley, 2026). A plain concrete paving slab is RM4 – RM8 per sq ft.
How do I stop my patio flooding after rain?
Lay the paving to a gentle fall away from the house toward a drain channel or a planted edge, and make sure the drain connects to a proper outlet.
What furniture lasts outdoors in Malaysia?
Built-in masonry benches, powder-coated aluminium and teak handle sun and rain best. Use quick-drying outdoor cushions and bring them in during storms.
Are the designs on this page real ClickBina projects?
No. They are illustrative concept designs that show patio options. Your yard is assessed and quoted to its own size, levels, drainage and council rules.
