Illustrative concept design: U-shaped kitchen with sage green cabinets, a terrazzo worktop and floor, a wide window over the sink and a stainless hood

An old house kitchen usually has a concrete worktop on brick supports, tiled fronts, a gas cylinder corner, no hood duct and a back door to the yard, and often old pipes and wiring behind the tiles. A good makeover fixes the hidden services first, then decides what to keep: a sound concrete top or terrazzo floor can stay, while termite-hit timber cabinets are best replaced with aluminium or new carcasses. Opening the half-wall to the dining area, enlarging the window over the sink and ducting the hood out make the biggest difference. These 12 concept designs show keep-and-refresh, modern and retro kitchens. Use the filters below to narrow them by style or home type.

How to plan an old house kitchen makeover

An old kitchen is two jobs: the services behind the walls and the kitchen you see. ClickBina's old house renovation guide sets the order for the whole house: make it safe and dry, treat termites, replace wiring and pipes while the walls are open, waterproof, re-tile, then carpentry and paint. In a kitchen that means the pipes, gas, wiring and hood route are decided before the cabinets are ordered.

  • Keep what is sound: a concrete worktop, a terrazzo floor, retro tiles you like.
  • Replace what has failed: termite-hit or swollen timber cabinets, cracked counters, a solid back door.
  • Open up where you can: a non-structural half-wall to the dining area, a wider window over the sink.
  • Duct the hood out through an existing opening if there is one.
  • Plan the yard: a covered back yard makes a wet kitchen, but needs approval.

The kitchen in a landed house usually has a yard and a back lane behind it, which gives options a flat or condo kitchen does not have: a wet kitchen outside, a glass back door, and a hood that vents straight out.

Fix pipes, wiring and gas first

  • Water pipes: the old house guide advises replacing galvanised iron pipes when the walls are open; it puts concealed PPR re-piping at RM6,500 – RM11,000 for a terrace house. See re-piping costs.
  • Wiring: kitchens need dedicated circuits for the hob, oven and fridge; old kitchen wiring is often the first to fail. See house rewiring.
  • Gas: plan where the cylinder or piped gas goes before the pantry and hob positions are fixed.
  • Termites: treat before new cabinets go in.

Common Questions

Should I keep the old concrete kitchen worktop?
If it is solid, level and not cracked, yes: re-tile the front and fit new doors below. Check the brick supports and the old pipes behind it first.
Can I remove the wall between my kitchen and dining area?
Often, in terrace houses the kitchen-dining wall is a non-structural partition. ClickBina's hacking guide puts removing it at RM3,000 – RM8,000 including make-good, but confirm it is not structural first.
What cabinets are best for an old house kitchen?
Aluminium cabinets resist damp and termites and suit the wet side; laminate doors on good carcasses suit the dry side.
My old kitchen has no hood. Can one be added?
Yes. A chimney hood can usually be ducted out through an existing vent or a new opening in the outside wall; plan a short, straight duct.
Should I change the pipes when I redo the kitchen?
If they are old galvanised iron, yes, while the walls are open. ClickBina's old house guide puts concealed PPR re-piping at RM6,500 – RM11,000 for a terrace house.
Can I roof over the back yard for a wet kitchen?
Usually only with the council's written approval, because the open space behind a terrace is controlled. Check before building.
Are the designs on this page real ClickBina projects?
No. They are illustrative concept designs that show kitchen options. Your kitchen is assessed and quoted after a check.
