Illustrative concept design: semi-outdoor Bali-style bathroom with a glass shower against a grey stone wall, timber-look floor, slatted door and tropical planters

A Bali-style bathroom brings the garden into the bathroom: natural stone, timber-look tiles, planting and daylight, with part of the room open to the sky or to a private garden. In Malaysia it suits landed homes with a back yard, a side strip or a courtyard, and it needs more planning than an ordinary bathroom, because rain, mosquitoes, privacy from the neighbours, drainage and waterproofing all have to be solved. Where the room cannot be opened up, the same materials can still give an enclosed terrace bathroom a resort feel. These 13 concept designs show open-air, semi-outdoor and indoor Bali-look bathrooms. Use the filters below to narrow them by style or home type.

How to plan a Bali-style bathroom in Malaysia

Decide first how open the bathroom will be. A fully open-air shower court is the most dramatic but only works on a landed lot with real privacy. A semi-outdoor bathroom, roofed but open on one side to a garden, is the most common version. An enclosed bathroom can still borrow the look with stone, timber-look tiles and plants.

  • Privacy first. Check sight lines from neighbours' upper windows before opening any wall. Screens, high walls and dense planting solve most of it.
  • Rain and drainage. Open areas take rain, so floors need falls, drains sized for heavy storms and waterproofing that carries on into the garden edge.
  • Mosquitoes and insects. Fine insect screens on the open side, a ceiling fan and no standing water keep a semi-outdoor bathroom usable at dusk.
  • Materials that like water. Natural stone, porcelain timber-look tiles and composite decking last far better outdoors than real timber.
  • Light and plants. Ferns, palms and other shade-tolerant plants suit a covered bathroom; full-sun plants belong in the open court.

ClickBina's bathroom design gallery covers everyday bathrooms in many styles, and the kampung house bathroom gallery covers wet areas in timber houses; this gallery stays with resort-style bathrooms in landed homes.

Each part of a Bali-style bathroom has its own guide. The stone wall panel guide compares natural, cultured and PU stone, the wood-look tiles guide covers timber-look porcelain for wet floors, and the bathroom basin guide covers vessel, trough and wall-hung basins.

For the open parts, the skylight cost guide explains glass and polycarbonate roofs, the floor trap and linear drain guide covers drainage, and the tropical-modern home guide shows how the same look runs through the rest of the house.

Practical limits before you open up a bathroom

  • Approvals. Opening an external wall, adding a pavilion or roofing over a yard can change the building and may need council approval; ask before work starts.
  • Waterproofing. Every wet floor and any wall that takes rain needs a full membrane, with the upturns carried past the shower and garden edge.
  • Drainage. Open areas must drain to the house drainage properly, with falls and a drain large enough for a tropical downpour.
  • Heat and glare. Glass roofs heat a bathroom quickly; shading or tinted glass helps.
  • Maintenance. Leaves, moss on stone and insects come with an open bathroom. Plan easy-clean surfaces and access to the garden side.

What a Bali-style bathroom costs

ClickBina's bathroom design guide gives the base: a basic bathroom renovation at RM6,000 – RM10,000 and a mid-range one at RM12,000 – RM18,000, and a custom vanity at RM800 – RM3,500 per unit. The wood-look tiles guide puts porcelain at RM18 – RM35 per sq ft supplied and laid, and the stone wall panel guide puts a cultured stone feature wall at RM2,000 – RM6,000 installed (indicative Klang Valley ranges for 2026).

The resort extras are priced on their own: the bathtub guide lists a freestanding bath at RM3,000 – RM10,000+ supplied, the skylight guide puts a basic fixed polycarbonate skylight at RM1,500 – RM4,000, a mid-range fixed glass one at RM4,000 – RM9,000 and custom glass roof sections from RM15,000, the insect screen guide lists a fixed aluminium frame screen at RM120 – RM220 per window, and the drain guide lists re-screeding with falls at RM500 – RM1,000.

Common Questions

Can I have an outdoor bathroom in a terrace house?
Usually a semi-outdoor one at the back, with a roof and screens, or a glass roof over a back strip. A fully open bathroom is easier on a corner lot, a semi-D or a bungalow where there is real privacy.
How do I stop mosquitoes in an open bathroom?
Close the open side with fine insect screens, run a ceiling fan, and remove standing water from planters, trays and drains.
What floor suits a Bali-style bathroom?
Timber-look porcelain tiles with a slip rating for wet areas, natural stone, or pebbles on a properly drained base. Real timber decking is best kept to dry edges.
How much does a Bali-style bathroom cost?
Start from ClickBina's bathroom tiers, RM6,000 – RM10,000 for a basic job and RM12,000 – RM18,000 for a mid-range one, then add the extras such as a freestanding tub, stone walls or a glass roof.
Does a glass roof make the bathroom hot?
It can. Use laminated or tinted glass, add shading or plants above, and keep air moving with a fan or ventilation.
Can I get a Bali look in a condo bathroom?
Yes, indoors only: stone-look and timber-look tiles, a timber-look vanity, woven accents and a tough indoor plant. Openings to the outside are not allowed in a strata unit.
Are the designs on this page real ClickBina projects?
No. They are illustrative concept designs that show Bali-style and outdoor bathroom options. Your bathroom is assessed and quoted to its own space and drainage.
