Mosquito Screen Repair
Torn Mesh, Rollers, Retractables & Magnetic Screens (2026)

How to tell what has failed on a mosquito screen, what repairing it involves, and when to replace it instead.

An aluminium insect screen frame being re-meshed with new grey mesh and a spline roller

A damaged mosquito screen can usually be repaired rather than replaced: torn mesh is re-meshed in the same frame, a sticking sliding screen needs its track cleaned or rollers changed, and a retractable screen that will not roll back usually has a tired spring or a derailed mesh. Replacement makes sense when an aluminium frame is bent or its corners have failed on a cheap roll-formed frame. ClickBina's mosquito net guide prices a new fixed aluminium frame screen at RM120–RM220 per window (indicative 2026, Klang Valley), which is the ceiling a repair should be measured against. A site visit is RM150, waived if you go ahead.

Which screen do you have?

Repair depends on the system. Wikipedia describes a window screen as a mesh of metal, fibreglass or plastic stretched in a frame of wood or metal, which keeps out insects without blocking the air. In Malaysian homes the common systems are:

ScreenHow it worksWhat usually fails
Fixed aluminium frameMesh held in a frame that clips or screws into the window openingTorn mesh; loose spline; bent frame
Sliding insect screenA framed mesh panel running in its own track beside a sliding window or doorRollers, track, corners, latch
Retractable (roll-up or side-roll)Mesh rolls into a cassette on a spring and runs in side guidesSpring loses tension; mesh jumps its guides; handle catch
Pleated meshA folded mesh concertinas along a track, often on wide doorsGuide cords, pleats creased or torn
Magnetic mesh curtainTwo mesh halves meet at a magnetic strip in the centreMagnets detach; mesh tears at the fixing strip

Torn or sagging mesh: re-meshing

A tear from a pet's claws, a child's finger or a broom handle is the most common fault. Small punctures can be patched, but a patch on a visible window looks untidy and the edges catch dust, so most repairs replace the mesh in the frame. On a fixed or sliding frame, the old mesh is pulled out, new mesh is laid over the frame, and a rubber spline is rolled into the channel to grip it evenly all round.

  • Choose the mesh by use: standard fibreglass for most windows; a heavier pet-resistant mesh where cats and dogs reach it.
  • Mesh that sags or ripples after re-meshing has been stretched unevenly or held with a spline that is too thin for the channel.
  • On a retractable screen the mesh is attached to the roller and the bottom bar; re-meshing is a bench job and is often done by replacing the mesh-and-roller set.

The pet-friendly home design guide explains why screens that cats and dogs can reach should be chosen with claws in mind.

Sliding screens: rollers, track and corners

Sliding insect screens run on small wheels at the bottom and are guided at the top. Sand and grit collect in the track, the wheels seize or wear flat, and the screen scrapes, jumps out, or will not close fully. Cleaning the track is the first step; worn wheels are replaced with a matching set. The sliding door roller guide explains the same principle on glass doors.

The frame corners matter. Wikipedia's entry on the screen door explains that roll-formed aluminium sliding screen frames are the cheapest to make, that their weakest point is the corner, and that once the corner loosens the door will stick and jam and typically needs replacement rather than repair. Extruded frames, made from thicker aluminium, are stronger and more easily repaired, because new corners can be inserted. So before paying for new rollers, check whether the frame is still square.

Retractable and pleated screens

A retractable screen that will not roll back up, rolls up crooked, or leaves a gap at the side has one of three faults: the spring inside the cassette has lost tension, the mesh has come out of its side guides, or the bottom bar's catch no longer engages. Re-seating the mesh in the guides and re-tensioning the spring are adjustments; a broken spring or a creased, torn mesh usually means a replacement mesh-and-roller set for that brand.

Pleated screens run on thin guide cords. When a cord frays or snaps the pleats hang unevenly and the screen stops closing flush. Cords, carriers and end caps can be replaced if the system's parts are available.

Magnetic mesh curtains

Magnetic screens are the cheapest option and the easiest to repair yourself: the small magnets along the centre seam come loose or break, and the hook-and-loop strip that holds the mesh to the frame loses its grip. Replacement magnets and adhesive strips are sold separately, but once the mesh itself is torn or baggy, a new curtain costs little more than the repair. They are also the least suited to homes with pets, because an animal simply pushes through the centre seam.

Latches, handles and seals

  • A sliding screen that will not stay shut usually has a worn latch or a frame that has dropped, so the latch misses the keeper.
  • Brush seals along the edges wear down and let insects through the gap; they slide out of their channel and are replaced by length.
  • Hinged screen doors sag on their hinges like any other door; re-fixing the hinges and adding a closer stops them slamming.
  • Plastic handles and pull tabs crack in the sun and are simple swaps if the model's parts are available.

Repair or replace?

Repair when the frame is straight and square and the fault is mesh, wheels, a spring or a seal. Replace when the frame is bent, the corners of a roll-formed frame have failed, parts for a retractable brand are no longer available, or several screens in the house are failing at once and a matched set is wanted. Doing all the screens in one visit keeps the cost per screen down.

If a repair quote for a fixed or magnetic window screen comes close to the new price, replacing it is the better buy; for sliding and retractable screens, repair is usually well below the cost of a new system.

What to send for a quote

  • The screen type for each opening: fixed, sliding, retractable, pleated or magnetic.
  • What is wrong: torn mesh, sticking, not closing, not rolling back, loose frame.
  • How many screens, and whether they are windows or doors.
  • The brand or supplier, if known, for retractable and pleated systems.
  • Whether pets reach the screens, so a stronger mesh can be quoted.

Common Questions

Can a torn mosquito screen be repaired?
Yes. Small holes can be patched, but most repairs replace the mesh in the existing frame and roll in a new spline so it sits tight.
Why is my sliding mosquito screen hard to slide?
Grit in the track or worn wheels. Clean the track first; if it still drags or jumps, the wheels are replaced and the frame checked for square.
My retractable screen will not roll back. What is wrong?
The cassette spring has lost tension, the mesh has left its side guides, or the bottom catch is worn. A broken spring or torn mesh usually means a new mesh-and-roller set.
Is it worth repairing a magnetic mosquito curtain?
Loose magnets and strips are cheap to fix, but a torn or baggy mesh curtain costs little more to replace.
How much does a new mosquito screen cost?
ClickBina's guide lists RM80–RM150 for magnetic mesh and RM120–RM220 for a fixed aluminium frame per window (indicative 2026, Klang Valley).
Which mesh is best with cats or dogs?
A heavier pet-resistant mesh in a fixed or sliding frame. Magnetic curtains are the least suitable, because pets push through the centre.
When should the whole screen be replaced?
When the frame is bent, the corners of a roll-formed frame have failed, or parts for the system are no longer available.
