Cooker Hood Repair
Weak Suction, Noise, Not Working & Oil Drips (2026)

Why a kitchen hood stops pulling, what you can fix yourself, and when the duct is the real problem.

A stainless chimney hood with a greasy baffle filter removed beside a clean one against white tiles

A cooker hood that has lost its suction usually has grease-clogged filters, a grease-lined duct or a stuck back-draught flap; one that is noisy usually has a greasy, unbalanced fan or a worn motor; one that will not switch on has a power, switch or control-board fault; and one that drips oil has full filters or an oil cup that needs emptying. Clean the filters first: it fixes more hoods than any repair. ClickBina's guides list hood filter replacement at RM80 – RM250 and a chimney hood replacement with installation, reusing the duct, at RM350 – RM600 (indicative 2026, Klang Valley). A site visit for a wider renovation job is RM150, waived if you go ahead.

Start with the filters

Grease filters are the first thing that fails and the easiest to fix. ClickBina's kitchen hood and hob guide recommends cleaning baffle filters monthly in hot soapy water or a dishwasher, drying them before refitting, and replacing them every 3–5 years. In a Malaysian wet kitchen with daily wok cooking, filters that have not been cleaned for months can cut the airflow badly enough that the hood seems broken.

Mesh filters clog faster than baffle filters. A recirculating (ductless) hood also has a charcoal filter behind the grease filter; charcoal cannot be washed and is replaced when the hood stops removing smells.

Weak suction: the duct is often the real problem

If the hood was always weak, or the filters are clean and it is still weak, look at where the air goes. The hood and hob guide explains that each metre of straight duct reduces effective suction by roughly 10%, that each 90° bend costs as much as another length of duct, and that runs should be short with few bends. A narrow flexible duct squashed into a small bulkhead, or a long route across the kitchen ceiling, will make any motor feel weak.

  • Check the back-draught flap at the outside vent. If it is stuck shut with grease or a bird's nest, the air has nowhere to go.
  • Look at the duct where you can reach it: crushed or sagging flexible duct restricts the flow.
  • Grease builds up inside the duct; the hood and hob guide suggests professional degreasing every 2–3 years for a household that cooks daily with a gas wok.
  • A hood ducted into the ceiling void rather than outside moves the problem, not the air. The wet and dry kitchen guide is clear: always duct to the exterior.

Noisy hood: fan, motor or panel

A hood that has become louder over time usually has grease on the fan wheel. Grease builds up unevenly, the fan goes out of balance, and it roars and vibrates. With the power off, the filters out and following the manual, the fan housing can often be reached and degreased. A grinding or screeching sound that remains after cleaning points to a worn motor bearing.

Rattles are often simpler: a loose filter, a loose chimney cover, or the duct knocking against the cabinet or the ceiling. Push gently on each panel while the hood runs to find the one that stops the noise.

Will not switch on, or controls not responding

Check the obvious first: the plug, the socket and whether a breaker has tripped. The hood and hob guide notes that a hood normally plugs into a 13A socket, often hidden inside the cabinet above it. If power reaches the hood and nothing happens, the fault is in the switch, the touch panel or the control board. Those are brand-specific parts, and on an older hood the part may cost a large share of a new hood's price.

Touch panels that stop responding are often greasy or wet underneath. Clean them with a damp, lightly soapy cloth, never spray cleaner directly onto the panel, and let it dry before trying again.

Oil dripping from the hood

Drips from the hood are nearly always grease that has nowhere else to go: saturated filters, an oil cup or tray that is full, or grease-laden condensation running back down the duct. Empty and clean the oil cup, clean the filters, and wipe the inside of the canopy. If drips keep coming after that, the duct may fall back towards the hood and need re-routing, which is part of the kitchen cabinet and ceiling work rather than a hood repair.

The kitchen deep cleaning guide covers degreasing the hood, the cabinets around it and the grout behind the hob as one job.

Repair or replace

A hood is simple: a motor, a fan, a switch or control board, lights and filters. Filters and lamps are cheap fixes. A motor or a control board on an older, basic hood is often close to the price of a new unit. The hood and hob guide lists supply prices by type, which is the benchmark for any repair quote:

If the hood was never strong enough because of the duct route, a new hood on the same duct will disappoint too. Fix the route at the same time. The custom kitchen cabinets page covers the cabinet side of re-routing a duct or fitting an integrated hood.

If you replace it: match the hood to the duct

A new hood should suit the duct as much as the cooking. The hood and hob guide warns against buying a hood wider than the duct can handle and gives a minimum duct size of 150 mm round for most chimney hoods, larger for high-suction models. It also recommends a back-draught damper at the outside vent, which keeps out air, insects and rain when the hood is off, and rigid galvanised steel duct for permanent installations because flexible aluminium duct collects grease.

Keeping a hood working

  • Clean the grease filters monthly if you cook with a wok most days.
  • Empty the oil cup whenever you clean the filters.
  • Run the hood for a few minutes after cooking so steam and fumes clear the duct.
  • Replace a recirculating hood's charcoal filter when smells stop being removed.
  • Have the duct degreased periodically, and keep access to it when the ceiling or cabinets are built.

Common Questions

Why is my cooker hood not sucking properly?
Usually clogged grease filters, grease inside the duct, or a back-draught flap stuck shut. If it was always weak, the duct is probably too long, too narrow or has too many bends.
Why is my kitchen hood so noisy?
Grease on the fan wheel throws it out of balance. Degreasing often fixes it; a grinding noise that remains points to a worn motor bearing.
Why is oil dripping from my hood?
The filters are saturated, the oil cup is full, or grease-laden condensation is running back down the duct. Empty the cup and clean the filters first.
How often should hood filters be cleaned?
ClickBina's hood and hob guide recommends cleaning baffle filters monthly and replacing them every 3–5 years.
Is it worth repairing an old cooker hood?
Filters and lamps, yes. A new motor or control board on an older basic hood often costs close to a new hood, which is RM200 – RM600 for a box hood and RM600 – RM3,000 for a chimney hood (unit only).
Can a hood be ducted into the ceiling?
No. Ducting into the ceiling void moves grease and steam into the ceiling. Always duct to the exterior.
What does a recirculating hood need?
A charcoal filter behind the grease filter, replaced when smells stop being removed. It is less effective for heavy wok cooking.
