Your fence is hard to climb but the gate is not? How to give a swing or sliding gate anti-climb mesh without overloading it.
📍 We serve KL, Selangor & Putrajaya.

An anti-climb gate is a swing or sliding gate whose infill is a rigid welded mesh with openings too small for fingers and shoes, so the gate stops being the easiest part of the boundary to climb. You can add mesh to a sound existing gate or order a new mesh-infill leaf, but either way the extra weight lands on the hinges, pillar, wheels, track and any autogate motor, and the lock must not be reachable through or around the mesh. ClickBina's gate guides list an autogate service call at RM150 – RM300 and a replacement motor at RM600 – RM1,200 (indicative 2026, Klang Valley); an anti-climb gate itself is quoted after the gate is measured.
Many landed homes in the Klang Valley now have a tall wall or an anti-climb mesh along the sides and back, and then a front gate with horizontal rails, decorative scrolls or flat bars every few inches. The rails work like a ladder. Anyone who wants in does not bother with the mesh; they walk to the gate and climb it, or reach through it to the lock.
ClickBina's anti-climb fence guide already covers the fence runs themselves: the mesh panels, posts, wall toppers and council height limits. It treats the gate as a separate line on the quote and moves on.
This guide is only about the gate: how to give an existing swing or sliding gate the same anti-climb infill as the fence, what that does to the hardware the gate hangs on, and what to settle before anyone starts welding. The burglar-proofing checklist for landed homes asks the right first question: can someone climb the fence or gate easily?
There are two routes, and the condition of the gate you have decides between them.
| Route | What is done | Suits | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Add mesh to the existing leaf | Mesh panels are fixed to the inside face of the frame, or the old infill is cut out and mesh welded in | A sound, square gate with healthy hinges or wheels | Extra weight on old hinges, rollers and the motor; rust hidden behind the new panel |
| New mesh-infill leaf | A new frame with anti-climb mesh as the infill, hung on the existing or new hardware | A rusted, sagging or racked gate, or a change of material | Matching the new leaf to the pillar, track and motor you keep |
| Mesh topper only | A mesh strip above the gate line | Low gates where height is the main problem | Does nothing about rails and reach-through below it |
If the gate already drops at the free end, scrapes the porch or jumps its track, fix that first or replace the leaf. Mesh added to a tired gate makes the old fault worse.
On a swing gate the whole leaf hangs from two hinges, and its weight acts as a lever on the top hinge and the pillar. Mesh over the full face of a leaf adds a sheet of steel wire to that lever. A gate that swung well with open bars can start to sag within months if the hinges were small to begin with.
ClickBina's sagging swing gate guide explains the four usual causes of a dropping leaf; every one of them gets worse when the leaf gets heavier.
A sliding leaf rolls on grooved wheels and is held upright by guide rollers at the top. Extra mesh adds weight to the wheels and the track, and it raises the surface area the top guides must hold against wind. Worn wheels, a dented track or loose guide rollers that were tolerable before will show up quickly.
Before the mesh goes on, the track should be straight and clean, the wheels should match the track profile and turn freely, and both end stops should be in place. The sliding gate repair guide walks through each part and the symptoms of a gate that has outgrown its hardware.
An autogate motor is chosen from the maker's chart for a given leaf weight and width. Adding mesh changes both inputs that matter: the leaf is heavier, and a denser infill catches more wind than open bars. ClickBina's autogate motor replacement guide warns that solid infill added after installation adds weight the original operator may never have been sized for, and that wind on a clad leaf pushes the choice up a model range. A close mesh sits between open bars and a solid sheet.
The obstacle-stop settings only protect people when the gate runs freely, which is another reason to sort the hardware before the mesh. See the autogate safety sensors guide.
A mesh gate with a reachable lock is still an easy gate. The mesh must run close to the lock and handle so that nobody can slip an arm or a tool through the infill or around the edge of the leaf to open it.
A gate is only as good as the gaps around it. The ground clearance under a swing leaf, the space over a sliding leaf, the gap at the hinge side and the open strip where the gate meets the wall are all places where someone can squeeze through or get a foothold. Ask the fabricator to show each gap on the drawing and say how it will be closed: a lower bottom rail, a brush strip, a fixed mesh panel or a capping on the pillar.
The gate should also match the height of the fence or wall either side. A tall mesh fence with a lower gate simply moves the climbing point.
Most gates here are mild steel, and the coating is their only defence against rust. Mesh adds hundreds of weld points and cut ends, and every one is a place for rust to start. Galvanised mesh with a powder coat lasts longer than painted mild steel, and cut ends and welds should be touched up before handover. ClickBina's gate materials guide compares steel, galvanised steel, aluminium and stainless steel, and notes that a lighter leaf is easier on the hinges, pillar and motor.
Mesh changes the look of the frontage. Black or dark grey powder coat usually blends best, and some owners keep the decorative bars on the road side with mesh fixed behind them. If the existing gate is badly rusted, the rusty gate guide helps you decide between repainting and replacing before you spend on mesh.
No standard price for anti-climb gate mesh is published on ClickBina's guides: it depends on the gate size, the mesh, the finish and whether the hinges, wheels or motor need work. These published figures for the gate and autogate items around it give a sense of scale (indicative 2026, Klang Valley):
| Item | Indicative price | Source guide |
|---|---|---|
| Autogate annual service call (lubrication, limits, sensors) | RM150 – RM300 | Sagging swing gate guide |
| Replacement autogate motor, Malaysian or OEM unit | RM600 – RM1,200 | Sagging swing gate guide |
| Gate posts in hard ground or a new motor slab | RM500 – RM1,500 | Sagging swing gate guide |
| New mild steel swing gate leaves, powder-coated, 12 ft total, before any motor | RM1,800 | Sagging swing gate guide |
| Complete new installed autogate | RM2,500 – RM8,000 | Sagging swing gate guide |

💬 WhatsApp for a quoteCompare a quote for mesh on an old gate with the price of a new leaf. When the old gate needs new hinges, wheels or bracing anyway, a new mesh-infill leaf can be the better spend.
| Ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Mesh opening and wire, and how it is fixed to the frame | Decides how hard the gate is to climb and cut, and whether fixings can be undone from outside |
| Estimated leaf weight after the work | Hinges, wheels and the motor must be checked against it |
| Hinge, wheel and guide roller changes included | A heavier leaf on old hardware fails early |
| Motor check, limit and force reset | An autogate must be re-set after the leaf changes |
| How the lock zone and gaps are closed | Reach-through and side gaps defeat the mesh |
| Finish: galvanised, powder coat, touch-up of welds | Mesh multiplies the weld points that can rust |
