Autogate Safety Sensors
Infrared Beams, Auto-Reverse & Fixing Faults (2026)

What stops an autogate closing on a car or a child, how to test it each month, and what the common sensor faults mean.

Infrared safety beam sensors on two gate pillars across a driveway with a half-open autogate

An autogate should never close on a car, a child or a pet. Two layers stop it: an infrared beam sensor pair across the opening that stops or reverses the gate when the beam is broken, and obstruction detection on the control board that reverses the gate when it meets resistance. A gate that reverses on its own is almost always one of these doing its job on bad information, usually a dirty or knocked beam. ClickBina's autogate price list puts a pair of infrared safety sensors at RM300 (indicative 2026, Klang Valley).

Why an autogate needs more than one safety layer

An autogate leaf is heavy and its motor is strong enough to push through a lot. On a swing gate the danger is the closing edge and the gap at the hinge; on a sliding gate it is the end of travel against the post; on a folding gate it is the fold itself, where two leaves close like scissors. A small child walking behind a car, a cat under the leaf or a car that has stopped halfway in the opening are the everyday cases.

No single device covers all of these. A beam only sees what crosses the beam line. Obstruction detection only reacts after the leaf has touched something. A loop detector only senses metal, so it sees a car but not a person. A safe installation layers them, and ClickBina's autogate price guide lists safety sensors as part of a proper installed price, not an optional extra. Our gate materials guide explains why a heavier leaf needs a stronger motor, which is also why the safety settings matter.

The safety devices on a home autogate

DeviceHow it worksWhat it catchesWhat it misses
Infrared beam sensor pairA transmitter on one side, a receiver on the other; breaking the beam stops or reverses the gateCars, people and large objects crossing the beam lineAnything above or below the beam, or outside the line
Obstruction detection on the boardThe board watches the motor's effort; a sudden rise means the leaf has hit somethingContact anywhere along the leafNothing until contact; set too high it may not react in time
Safety edgeA soft rubber strip on the leading edge that signals when pressedTrapping at the closing edge of sliding gatesContact elsewhere on the leaf
Loop detectorA wire loop under the driveway senses a car's metal massA car sitting in the openingPeople, children and pets

Most home gates have at least the beam pair and the board's obstruction setting. Safety edges are more common on heavy sliding gates and commercial gates; loop detectors on busier driveways.

Infrared beam sensors: placement that works

A beam pair only protects the line between its two heads, so where they go matters more than the brand.

  • Across the opening, on the outside of the leaf's swing, so a car or person in the path is seen before the leaf reaches them.
  • At bumper height for cars; low enough that a small child crossing is also likely to break the beam.
  • A second pair on the inside line, or at a second height, on double-leaf swing gates and where small children use the driveway.
  • Aligned and rigidly fixed. A head on a loose post or a thin bracket drifts out of line every time the gate shakes.
  • Shaded from low sun where possible. Strong morning or evening sun straight into a receiver can make it misread.
  • Away from plants. A swaying branch or creeper across the beam makes the gate reverse at random.

Folding gates need particular care: the fold itself is a pinch point the beam cannot see, so the board's obstruction setting and keeping children away from the hinges matter more.

Auto-reverse and obstruction force

The board's obstruction detection is the last line of defence. It should be set just high enough for the gate to run smoothly in all weather, and no higher. When a gate becomes stiff, from a dragging wheel, a dry hinge or a sagging leaf, the motor works harder, the board sees that as an obstruction, and the gate starts reversing for no visible reason.

The wrong fix is to turn the obstruction force up until the gate pushes through. That makes the symptom go away and takes the protection with it. ClickBina's autogate repair guide calls this the one shortcut never worth taking. Fix the resistance instead: hinges, wheels, track and leaf alignment, then reset the force at a sensible level.

How to test the sensors every month

  1. Beam test: start the gate closing, then pass a large cardboard box or a wheelie bin through the beam line. The gate should stop or reverse at once. Never use a person or a pet for the test.
  2. Second pair: repeat at each beam pair if there is more than one.
  3. Obstruction test: on a closing swing gate, place a sturdy object such as a cardboard box at the closing edge. The leaf should reverse on light contact, not crush it.
  4. Indicator lights: most receivers show a light when the beam is aligned. Note what normal looks like.
  5. Clean the lenses with a soft dry cloth, and clear webs, insects and plants from the beam line.

If any test fails, keep children and pets away from the gate and use it only while watching until it is fixed. A gate that fails the obstruction test should not be left on automatic close.

Some technicians bridge out a faulty sensor with a wire so the gate works again. If your gate was ever repaired that way, the beam may be decoration only. Ask for every sensor to be tested in front of you.

Adding sensors to an older gate

Many older gates were installed with no beam pair, or with one that has long since failed. Most control boards have terminals for safety sensors, so adding a pair is usually a matter of fixing the heads, running a cable across or under the driveway, connecting them to the board and setting the board to use them. Running the cable is the real work: a trench or a cut across a tiled porch costs more than surface cable on a wall.

If the board is too old to accept sensors, or the gate is already due a motor, it can make more sense to replace the motor and board together. The motor replacement guide covers matching a new operator to an existing gate.

Cable trenching across a finished driveway is quoted after measuring, because it depends on the floor and the distance.

Children, pets and everyday habits

  • Keep remotes out of children's reach and teach them that the gate is not a toy.
  • Do not walk or cycle through the opening while the gate is moving; wait until it stops.
  • Never drive in or out until the gate has fully opened.
  • Check the gate's path before pressing close from inside the house, especially if the view is blocked.
  • Keep pets in when the gate runs; cats like to sit under leaves and in the track.

For gates at childcare centres and other premises with many children, the same safety thinking applies as in our child-safe fittings guide. If your gate stops in a blackout, see our guide to an autogate in a power cut.

Common Questions

Why does my autogate open and then close again by itself?
Usually the infrared beam is blocked or out of line, so the board thinks something is in the way. Clean the lenses, clear plants and webs, and check the receiver's indicator light.
Why does my autogate reverse halfway?
If it happens at the same point each time, a stiff hinge, wheel or track is being read as an obstruction. Release the motor and push the leaf by hand to find the stiff spot, then fix it rather than raising the force.
How much are autogate safety sensors?
ClickBina's autogate price list puts a pair of infrared safety sensors at RM300 (indicative 2026, Klang Valley).
Can a safety sensor be bypassed?
It can be wired out, but then the gate can close on a car or a person. Never bypass a sensor; have it repaired or replaced.
Do I need two pairs of sensors?
On double-leaf swing gates and driveways used by small children, a second pair on the inside line or at a second height covers gaps a single beam misses.
How do I test my autogate sensors safely?
While the gate is closing, pass a large cardboard box or a wheelie bin through the beam. The gate should stop or reverse at once. Never test with a person or a pet.
Does a loop detector protect children?
No. A loop detector senses a car's metal, not people. It complements the beam sensors; it does not replace them.
