Slowing traffic in a car park, a condo compound or a factory yard — the right device for the speed you want, fixed down properly, and approved by whoever actually owns the ground.

This page is price-free on purpose — humps are priced by type, length, the surface they are fixed to and the quantity, and the honest answer depends on a site visit. A hump is a physical reminder. It does not persuade a driver to slow down — it makes not slowing down uncomfortable. That is a blunt instrument, and it is worth being clear about what you are buying before you buy it, because the complaints that follow a badly chosen hump are usually about discomfort, noise and vehicle damage rather than about safety.
Almost every hump we are asked to install is doing one of three jobs. The first is protecting people on foot: a crossing point, a lobby entrance, a lift lobby door that opens into a driveway, a playground or a school gate. The second is protecting a hazard: a blind corner, a ramp crest, the top of a basement ramp, a junction where a service lane meets a main driveway. The third, and the least honest, is answering a complaint — residents have written in about speeding, and a hump is the visible thing a committee can point to. That third case is where humps get installed in the wrong place and are then removed a year later at the same cost again.
Decide which job yours is doing, and where precisely the risk sits, before choosing a product. A device placed at the point of the actual hazard works. A device placed where it was convenient to install does not.
These names are used loosely in conversation and mean quite different things in practice.

The material changes the installation, the maintenance and what happens when it has to come up.

For a condo car-park deck or a shoplot forecourt, bolt-down rubber is usually the sensible starting point precisely because it is reversible — if the position proves wrong, it moves. For a busy factory yard with loaded lorries, a cast device lasts and a bolted one does not. Do not let the cheapest line on a quotation choose this for you.
Position decides whether a hump works or simply annoys people. A few placements cause most of the trouble.
Not on a ramp or a ramp crest. A device on a slope catches undersides and can unsettle a vehicle at exactly the point where the driver has least control. The place to slow traffic is before the ramp, not on it.
Not immediately after a blind corner. A driver who cannot see the device until they are on it brakes hard, which is how the vehicle behind ends up in the boot of the one in front. Put it where it is visible in good time.
Not across a drainage line. A continuous bar laid across a falling surface dams the water. This is the single most common installation defect on Klang Valley car parks, and it is covered in its own section below.
Not directly outside a bedroom window. Vehicles decelerating, riding over and accelerating away generate noise all night, and rubber sections drum. A hump that solves a speeding complaint and creates a noise complaint has not solved anything.
Not on a fire-appliance access route without thought. If a route has to stay usable for emergency vehicles, a cushion arrangement that lets wide axles straddle the gaps is the device designed for that case. A hump is a permanent obstruction placed in the path of traffic, and obstructions have owners. The same three checks our bollard guide sets out apply here, and they are the whole of what this page will say about approval.
Is the ground yours? The road reserve, the five-foot way and shared access roads are not your land to alter, however convenient it would be. Road humps on public roads are controlled by the local authority, so check with your local council — DBKL, MBPJ, MBSA and the rest — before fixing anything outside your own boundary. A business premise licence or a renovation approval does not cover it.
Is it common property? In a strata development the compound, the driveway and the car park are normally common property, which the management body maintains and controls — so a hump is the committee’s decision, not an individual owner’s. Are you a tenant? Drilling and anchoring into a landlord’s slab or forecourt is an alteration. Get written consent and agree who removes the device and who makes good at the end of the term — our commercial property tenancy guide → covers the ground rules. A bolt-down installation looks like five minutes of work and is not. The sequence that produces a device still tight in two years runs like this.
The position is marked and agreed on site, in daylight, with somebody who will have to live with it — not decided by the installer alone. The surface is then checked: anchors need sound material to bite into, and a bolt-down device fixed through a thin or crumbling wearing course will loosen quickly no matter how well it was torqued on the day. On a suspended car-park deck there is a further question, which is what lies under the slab surface, because drilling anchors into a post-tensioned or thin topping deck is not something to do casually.
Sections are then laid out dry and checked for line and for the full crossing width, including the end caps. Holes are drilled and cleaned properly — dust left in an anchor hole is the usual reason a fixing is loose within months — and the anchors are set and tightened evenly so no section stands proud of its neighbour. Finally the whole run is walked and the edges checked: a raised section edge is a trip hazard for people and a catch point for trolleys and motorcycles.
Asphalt and cast installations are a different trade with a different programme: they need the surface prepared and bonded, they need curing time, and they need the area closed to traffic while that happens. Agree the closure and the diversion before the day, not on it.
This is the section that saves the most money, because the hump itself is rarely what fails — the surface around it is.
A car park, a driveway and a forecourt are all built to fall towards somewhere. Laying a continuous barrier across that fall dams the water behind it. Standing water then does three things: it makes the approach slippery, it accelerates the breakdown of the surface at the ponding point, and on a suspended deck it sits on the waterproofing and finds every weakness in it. Within a season or two you are repairing a deck rather than replacing a hump. The fix is cheap and has to happen at installation: either leave a deliberate drainage gap in the run where the water falls, or set the device so water passes under or beside it, and check the outcome during actual rain rather than on a dry day.
Anchor penetrations are the second exposure. Every anchor into a waterproofed deck is a hole through the waterproofing, and holes through waterproofing leak into the level below unless they are sealed as part of the installation. A device a driver cannot see is a hazard rather than a control. Three things make it visible, and quotations routinely include only the first.
The device itself should be high-contrast and should stay that way. Yellow and black alternating segments are the convention; reflective inserts are what make them work at night. Painted-on contrast wears off under tyres within months, so ask whether the contrast is moulded and whether the reflective elements are replaceable.
Approach marking on the running surface warns the driver before the device. On a dark basement level or an unlit yard this matters more than the device colour, because headlights pick up the ground before they pick up a low object.
A warning sign on the approach completes it, and on a route used by visitors rather than residents it does most of the work. Every one of these is something we have been called out to correct rather than something theoretical.
Installing before settling the permission question. A device on ground that is not yours comes up again at your cost. Check the council position first if the surface is or might be a public road.
Damming the drainage. A continuous run across a falling surface causes ponding, surface breakdown and, on a suspended deck, water sitting on the waterproofing.
Choosing the device from a price list rather than from the traffic. A car-park bump on a road, or a hump where a cushion was needed because fire appliances use the route, produces complaints rather than safety.
Drilling a coated deck without telling anyone. Unsealed anchor penetrations leak into the level below and can void a coating warranty.
Skipping the approach marking. The device is low and dark car parks are dark. Marking costs little and prevents most of the complaints.
Leaving the maintenance to nobody. Bolts loosen, end sections go missing, reflectors dull. Put a walk-round into the site’s routine inspection and keep two spare sections.
