DC vs AC Autogate Motor
Which to Buy or Upgrade To (2026)

What really differs between DC and AC gate motors, when each makes sense, and what converting an old gate involves.

A DC auto gate motor runs from a battery that the mains keeps charged, so it can keep opening the gate in a power cut, and it usually starts and stops softly; an AC motor runs straight off the mains, stops in a blackout unless a separate backup is added, and suits heavy, continuous use. For most Malaysian terrace and semi-D homes, outage backup is the deciding point. Converting an existing AC gate to DC usually means a new motor, a new board and often new brackets. ClickBina's autogate repair guide puts a replacement motor at RM600 – RM1,200 for Malaysian or OEM units up to RM1,800 – RM3,500 for a benchmark European brand.

DC and AC autogate motors in one minute

Every autogate motor is driven by a control board on the house supply. The difference is what happens in between. A US gate-operator supplier's AC vs DC comparison describes it this way: an AC operator draws alternating current from the grid directly, while a DC operator is typically powered by a battery that a transformer keeps charged from the grid.

That one difference drives almost everything else: what happens in a blackout, how smoothly the gate moves, what wears out, and whether solar is possible. Our autogate power cut guide covers the blackout side in detail; this page is about choosing the motor.

DC vs AC compared

These are general tendencies from the supplier comparison, not absolute rules; individual models vary.

PointAC motorDC motor
PowerStraight from the mainsBattery kept charged from the mains
Power cutStops unless a separate inverter and battery system is addedKeeps working for a number of cycles, depending on battery size, gate weight and battery age
Start and stopGenerally no soft start or soft stopRamps up and slows down near the end of travel
NoiseLouder under loadQuieter
Heavy continuous useHandles it nativelyPossible with continuous-duty models if the battery is sized for the traffic
SolarNot practicalPossible with a compatible panel and charge controller

The same source makes a point worth repeating: DC is not simply the newer, better technology. AC operators remain a strong choice where traffic is heavy and power is reliable.

Battery backup: the main reason homes choose DC

Malaysian blackouts often arrive with thunderstorms, exactly when nobody wants to push a gate by hand in the rain. The power cut guide sets out the practical difference: a low-voltage DC motor with a healthy backup battery keeps working for a limited number of cycles, while a mains AC motor stops and needs the manual release.

Two cautions. The supplier comparison warns that a DC operator with a tired battery can stop within a handful of cycles in a long outage, so the battery is a consumable that needs replacing. And accessories such as a GSM module or keypad draw from the same battery, so they shorten its run in a blackout.

Soft start, soft stop and wear

DC controllers ramp the motor up and slow it down as the gate approaches open or closed, instead of jerking to full speed. The supplier article notes that this reduces mechanical stress on the gate, cuts noise, and tends to extend the life of hinges, rollers and other moving parts. It is not just comfort: a gate that slams into its stops every cycle loosens itself over time.

Whatever the motor, the gate has to move freely. Our autogate repair guide explains that motors fail early when a dragging track or dropped hinge overloads them, and no motor choice fixes that.

Brushed and brushless DC

DC motors come in two kinds. Brushed motors use carbon brushes that wear and eventually need replacing. Brushless motors switch electronically, with no brushes to wear; the supplier article says they tend to run cooler and sustain higher cycle counts, at a higher price and with board-level rather than mechanical spare parts. Ask which one you are being quoted.

When AC still makes sense

  • Very heavy traffic, such as a shared gate for several houses, a shop lot or a small factory, where a smaller DC unit's battery may not recharge fast enough between cycles.
  • Reliable power and no need for backup, where the manual release is acceptable in the rare outage.
  • Replacing like for like on an AC system that is otherwise healthy, where converting would mean a new board and brackets.

The supplier article frames high-traffic DC trouble as a sizing issue rather than a flaw in the technology: a continuous-duty DC unit with a properly sized battery handles the same jobs. Either way, the motor must be sized for the gate's weight, width and use.

Converting an AC gate to DC

The power cut guide is direct: upgrading an old AC system to a DC motor just to gain battery backup is a bigger job, because the motor, the board and often the brackets change. Our autogate motor replacement guide explains what has to match the existing gate before any new motor goes on.

  1. Confirm the gate itself is worth keeping: hinges, rollers, track and posts in good order.
  2. Choose a DC operator sized from the maker's chart for your leaf weight and width.
  3. Expect a matching DC control board; some operators will not run on the old board.
  4. Check whether the existing mounting suits the new operator, or new brackets are needed.
  5. Fit the backup battery and confirm the board charges it, then re-pair every remote.

If the gate leaf, hinges and track are all tired, compare the conversion against a complete new installation before deciding.

What the motors cost

ClickBina's autogate repair guide publishes motor and part prices by brand class (indicative Klang Valley, 2026). It does not split them into DC and AC, and we have no published figure for the price gap between the two, so we do not invent one.

ItemIndicative price (2026)Notes
Malaysian / OEM motorRM600 – RM1,200Lower initial cost; spare parts may be hard to source
FAAC (Italy) motorRM1,800 – RM3,500Industry benchmark, widely serviced
Control-board backup batteryRM80 – RM200A consumable on DC systems
Complete new installed autogateRM2,500 – RM8,000The figure to weigh a conversion against

The repair guide adds that moving up to a quality European motor adds roughly RM800 – RM1,500 over a budget OEM unit. Ask for the brand, the model number and whether it is DC or AC in writing on any quotation.

Common Questions

Is a DC autogate motor better than AC?
For most homes, yes, mainly because a DC motor keeps working on its battery in a power cut and starts and stops softly. AC still suits very heavy traffic where power is reliable and backup is not needed.
Does a DC autogate work during a blackout?
Yes, for a limited number of cycles, if the backup battery is healthy. A tired battery can give up within a handful of cycles, so replace it before it expires.
Can I convert my AC autogate to DC?
Usually, but it is more than a motor swap: the motor, the control board and often the brackets change. Check the gate itself is sound first.
How much is a DC autogate motor in Malaysia?
ClickBina's repair guide lists motors from RM600 to RM1,200 for Malaysian or OEM units up to RM1,800 to RM3,500 for FAAC. It does not publish a separate DC vs AC price gap.
Why does my DC autogate get slower before it stops?
On battery-driven systems a failing battery often shows as slow, weak or partial travel before the gate stops. Have the battery and its charging checked first.
What is a brushless DC autogate motor?
A DC motor with electronic switching instead of carbon brushes. It has no brushes to wear, but costs more and its spare parts are usually boards rather than mechanical parts.
Can a DC autogate run on solar?
It can, with a compatible panel and charge controller; solar is not practical with an AC motor. Our solar autogate guide explains when it works.
