Blind corners, basement ramps, warehouse aisles and narrow driveways — the right mirror, sized and aimed properly, plus the small protective fittings that stop most of the damage on a site.

A convex mirror buys you sight lines you do not physically have. Almost every one we are asked to install is solving one of four situations, and naming yours decides the size, the type and the position.
A blind corner where two paths cross. A basement car-park junction, a warehouse aisle end, a corridor T-junction in a factory. Here the mirror shows a driver or a forklift operator whether anything is coming from the leg they cannot see.
An exit onto a driveway or road. A ramp mouth, a boundary wall gate, a shoplot rear exit where a driver has to nose out to see. This is the most common residential case and often the most valuable one.
A reversing or manoeuvring area. A loading bay, a tight car-park bay, a turning head where vehicles reverse towards something fragile or towards people on foot.
Surveillance of a space that cannot be seen from the counter. Retail aisles and small shops use dome mirrors for exactly this. It is a different job from traffic, and it wants a different mirror.
If your situation is not one of these, a mirror may be the wrong purchase. Poor lighting reads as a sight-line problem and is fixed with light. Dome mirrors are designed for close-range overview from below and give a small, distant-looking image of anything approaching at vehicle distance. For traffic, a correctly sized round mirror on the approach almost always beats a dome on the ceiling.
Three numbers matter and only one of them is on the box.
Diameter against viewing distance. A convex mirror shrinks everything it shows. The further away the driver is when they look at it, the larger the mirror has to be for the image to be readable at all. A mirror that is perfectly clear when you stand beside it during the site visit can be useless from the position a driver actually occupies — which is why the only honest way to size one is to stand where the driver will be, at the point they need the information, and look. Suppliers publish a recommended viewing distance for each diameter; ask for it, and check it from the real position rather than from the wall.
Height. Too low and the mirror is blocked by a parked car, a bin or a delivery trolley; too high and it shows roof and sky rather than the approach. Mount it so the useful part of the image is the running surface where vehicles and people will be, and check it after the site is in normal use, not while it is empty.
Aim. The mirror is aimed at the conflict point — the spot where the two paths would actually meet — not straight down the aisle and not at the approaching vehicle. Aiming is a two-person job: one stands at the driver’s position, the other adjusts. It takes minutes and it is the single most skipped step in the whole installation.
A mirror is only as good as the thing holding it still. The four common mountings each have a failure mode.
On an existing wall or column. The simplest and usually the best, provided the substrate is sound. Masonry, concrete and a plasterboard-lined stud wall take three different fixings, and a mirror that pulls out of a poor fixing tends to do so in wind or after being knocked. Check what is behind the surface before drilling.
On a dedicated post. Necessary where there is no wall at the right point — a ramp mouth, an open yard, a junction in a compound. The post must be set properly into the ground and sized for wind load with the mirror acting as a sail. A post that leans slowly over a year takes the aim with it.
On a fence, gate or railing. Convenient and usually a mistake, because anything that moves takes the mirror’s aim with it every time. A mirror on a swinging gate is aimed only when the gate is shut.
On a ceiling or soffit. The mounting for dome mirrors. In every case, specify an adjustable bracket that can be re-aimed and then locked, rather than a fixed one. Mirrors get knocked, and a mirror that cannot be re-aimed becomes decoration.
Mirrors rarely arrive alone. These are the small fittings that come up in the same conversation, and most of them prevent more damage per ringgit than anything else on a site.

Mirrors are trusted more than they deserve, so it is worth being explicit about the limits before you rely on one.
It flattens distance and speed. The compression that gives a convex mirror its wide view also makes everything look further away and slower than it is. A driver who uses the mirror as their only check will occasionally misjudge, which is why a mirror belongs alongside a clear sight line, adequate lighting and appropriate speed — not instead of them.
It does not record anything. A mirror helps at the moment of use and provides nothing afterwards. If the underlying requirement is evidence of what happened at a junction or a loading bay, that is a camera, not a mirror — our CCTV installation guide → covers that properly.
It does not stop anything. A mirror at a corner where vehicles regularly strike a column documents the problem to the driver; a column guard prevents the damage, and a bollard prevents the vehicle arriving. Buy the one that matches the outcome you need.
It fails silently. A dulled, cracked, dirty or drifted mirror keeps hanging there looking like a working safety device. Nobody reports it, because nothing has obviously broken. That is precisely why mirrors belong in a routine inspection round rather than being fitted and forgotten.
Outdoor mirrors here have a harder life than the catalogue photographs suggest, and three local factors decide how long one stays useful.
Sun. A mirror facing into low morning or evening sun becomes a source of glare rather than information at exactly the times traffic peaks. A hood shades the face and is worth specifying on any west or east facing position. Prolonged ultraviolet exposure also yellows and hazes cheaper acrylic faces, which is the usual reason an outdoor mirror is unreadable within a couple of years.
Rain. Water sheeting across a mirror face makes it useless during the heaviest part of a downpour, which is when the sight lines are worst anyway. A hood helps here too. What matters more is that rain carries dirt onto the face and leaves it there, so an outdoor mirror needs to be reachable for cleaning without special access equipment — check that before choosing the mounting height.
Dust and exhaust film. In a basement car park the face picks up a greasy film that is not obvious until you wipe half of it. In a factory yard it is dust. Either way, cleaning is the maintenance task, and the mirror that gets cleaned is the one somebody can reach with a cloth on a pole.
So specify for the position: weather-rated face and a hood outdoors, a corrosion-resistant bracket, an adjustable and lockable mount, and a height that can be cleaned and re-aimed from the ground.
Mirrors and small fittings are cheap enough that people install them without asking, and then have to remove them. The same three checks our bollard guide applies are worth running here.
Is the ground or the wall yours? The road reserve, the five-foot way and shared access roads are not your land, and a mirror on a post at the edge of a public road is no more yours to place than a bollard would be. Check with your local council — DBKL, MBPJ, MBSA and the rest — before fixing anything outside your own boundary.
Is it common property? In a strata development the compound, the driveway, the car park and the columns in it are normally common property, which the management body controls — so mirrors, wheel stoppers and column guards are a committee decision rather than an individual owner’s. These are small-value items that become expensive through repetition and rework, so itemising matters more than the total suggests.

Sizing the mirror from the wall instead of from the driver. Stand where the driver will actually be. A mirror that is clear at arm’s length can show nothing usable from the approach.
Using a shop dome at a vehicle junction. Dome mirrors are for close-range overview. For traffic, a correctly sized round mirror on the approach works far better.
Mounting on a gate, fence or anything that moves. The aim moves with it.
Skipping the aiming step. Two people and five minutes is the difference between a safety device and an ornament.
Fitting an indoor acrylic mirror outdoors. It hazes and yellows in Klang Valley sun, and an unreadable mirror is worse than none because people still trust it.
Mounting too high to clean. If it needs a ladder and a permit, it will not be cleaned, and a dirty mirror shows nothing.
Buying a mirror when the answer was a guard, a bollard or a light. Match the fitting to the outcome: seeing, protecting, stopping or illuminating are four different purchases.
