Autogate faults look alike from the driver’s seat and are quite different underneath. Before you call anyone, note exactly what the gate does — a technician who arrives knowing the symptom diagnoses faster and quotes more honestly.

A backup battery for the control board (RM80–RM200) keeps the gate operable during an outage, and it is a consumable — it does not last the life of the system. A gate that dies with every power cut usually has no backup battery, or has one that has quietly expired. On battery-driven systems a failing battery also shows up as slow, weak or partial travel long before it stops the gate entirely, which is why "opens halfway" is so often a power problem rather than a motor problem.
If the protective device keeps tripping, that is not a nuisance to be reset repeatedly — it is a fault being reported. Repeated tripping points to a wiring, earth-leakage or motor-start problem that needs inspecting properly. Work on the supply, the isolator or the distribution board is licensed electrical work in Malaysia and must be carried out by a competent person registered with Suruhanjaya Tenaga (the Energy Commission), not a general handyman. The motor and the control board are the two most likely failure points on any autogate, and telling them apart is the technician’s first real task. The quick separation is the manual release: disengage the motor and push the gate by hand. If it moves freely, the mechanics are fine and the fault is electrical. If it drags, binds or will not move, you have a mechanical problem that has probably been slowly killing the motor for months.
Motors fail from three causes in Malaysian conditions: water ingress and corrosion, sustained overload from a gate that has become stiff, and simple age. A well-maintained system with quality components typically lasts 10–20 years, so a motor failing well inside that window is usually a symptom of something else — which is why replacing a burnt-out motor without fixing the dragging track just buys you a second failure. Control boards fail from water ingress, lightning and surge events, and ants and geckos bridging terminals, which is far more common than most owners believe. Ask for the fault to be shown to you and for the failed part to be handed over.
A gate that reverses on its own is almost always a safety device doing its job on bad information. Photocells work as a beam across the opening; if one side is knocked out of alignment by a reversing car, filmed over with dust, streaked with rain or fogged with spider web, the gate reads an obstruction that is not there. Cleaning and realigning them is routine work and part of a proper service.
Limit switches tell the board where fully open and fully closed are, and they drift — through vibration, through a post shifting slightly, or through a gate sagging on its hinges. A gate that stops short, over-travels, or slams at the end of its run usually needs limits and travel speed re-set, not parts. Do not ask for the obstruction force to be turned up to push through a sticking gate: the auto-reverse function is what stops the gate closing on a child or a car, and defeating it to mask a mechanical fault is the one shortcut never worth taking. Fix the resistance instead.
If the wall button works and the remote does not, the fault is in the remote chain, not the gate. Work through it in order: try a second remote, change the battery (RM5–RM20 each, and worth replacing every 1–2 years as a matter of course), re-pair the remote to the receiver, then look at the receiver and aerial. A receiver that has lost its programming after a surge will need every remote re-paired — keep a note of how many remotes are in the household, because the one in the car that is away for the weekend is the one that gets forgotten.
Falling range is its own signal. If you now have to be almost at the gate when you used to trigger it from the corner, suspect the aerial, its position, or a new source of interference nearby rather than the remotes. Where accessories are involved, the published Klang Valley costs are: GSM module to open the gate by phone RM400–RM900; keypad or fingerprint reader RM200–RM600; intercom RM300–RM800; loop detector for vehicle sensing RM400–RM800. A faulty accessory can hold the whole gate up, so ask for it to be isolated during diagnosis rather than replaced on suspicion.
Mechanical problems are the ones owners ignore until they become electrical bills. A sliding gate runs on a track that collects grit, leaves and washed-in sand; a swing gate hangs on hinges and an arm that need lubrication. Neither is glamorous, and both quietly increase the load the motor has to overcome until the motor gives up. Lubrication of hinges, arm joints, rollers and track is standard service work for exactly this reason.
Two mechanical faults are more serious. The first is a gate post that has moved — in soft ground, or where water has undermined the footing, the post goes out of plumb and the gate no longer meets its stop. Installing gate posts in hard ground or pouring a new motor slab runs RM500–RM1,500, and this is genuine builder’s work, not a technician visit. The second is corrosion of the gate leaf itself, particularly on mild steel gates; rust spots need touching up immediately, because once a leaf is structurally rusted no motor repair will save it. Two warnings on motor replacement. Budget OEM motors can look identical to European brands on a quotation, so ask for the brand and model number to be written down. And moving up to a quality European motor adds roughly RM800–RM1,500 over a budget OEM unit but typically lasts two to three times longer and is easier to service — which on a gate used many times a day is usually the cheaper decision over ten years.

The honest test is simple: add up the parts and labour quoted, compare it against the RM2,500–RM8,000 that a complete new installed autogate costs, and then ask what condition the gate leaf and posts are in. Spending half the price of a new system on a rusted gate is the most common bad call in this category.
Almost every emergency call-out on an autogate was avoidable. Annual servicing at RM150–RM300 per call should cover lubrication of hinges, arm joints, rollers and track; checking and adjusting limit switches and travel speed; inspecting sensor alignment and testing the auto-reverse function; checking all wiring connections for corrosion, especially in coastal or flood-prone areas; and inspecting the gate panel for rust spots on mild steel gates and touching them up immediately.
Add two owner habits between services. Replace remote batteries every one to two years rather than waiting for them to die, and clear the sliding track after heavy rain — washed-in grit is the commonest cause of a juddering gate.
