A turnstile gate controls people walking into a building one at a time: a tripod arm, a waist-high flap or swing barrier (speed gate), or a full-height rotating gate unlocks when a card, QR code or face is accepted. Offices, condominium lobbies, gyms and factories use them to stop tailgating and log who comes in. The lane hardware, the reader, the cabling under the floor and the software all add up, so turnstiles are quoted per project. No ClickBina guide prices the gates themselves; for scale, ClickBina's door access guide puts card access at RM800 – RM1,600 per door and face recognition at RM1,800 – RM6,500 per door (market estimate 2026, Klang Valley).

What a turnstile gate does

A turnstile is a pedestrian lane barrier. It stays locked until it receives a valid signal from a reader, then lets one person through and locks again. Unlike a door with an access reader, which anyone can follow through while it is open, a turnstile is designed to admit one person per valid entry, which is why buildings that care about tailgating, headcounts or visitor logs use them. It is the walking equivalent of the car park barrier covered in our boom barrier guide.

Where turnstiles are used

  • Office lobbies: staff tap a card or show their face; visitors get a QR pass from reception.
  • Condominium lobbies: residents enter with their access card; visitors are let in by the guardhouse or a resident's pass.
  • Gyms and clubs: members enter with a card, app QR code or face; staff can see who is in.
  • Factories and warehouses: shift workers clock in through the gate, which also feeds time attendance.

Before choosing, count the people who pass at the busiest moment (lunch, shift change, the morning rush) and decide how many lanes are needed so a queue does not build up at the gate.

Readers and how they connect

The gate is only the barrier; the decision to open comes from the reader and the access control software. Most gates accept card or RFID readers, QR scanners and face readers mounted on the cabinet. A face terminal that is networked and administered centrally can be tied to turnstiles, lifts or time attendance, as ClickBina's face recognition vs fingerprint guide explains. Face and fingerprint readers collect biometric data, which brings personal data rules into play, so decide who can see the records and how long they are kept.

If the building already has a card system, ask whether the new gates can use the same cards and software, or whether everyone will need new credentials.

Accessibility, goods and the fire alarm

  • Wide lane. Plan at least one wider lane for wheelchair users, prams, deliveries and movers; swing barriers are often used for this.
  • Emergency release. Pedestrian gates on an escape route must open freely when the fire alarm sounds or the power fails. Settle this with the building's fire safety requirements before ordering, as ClickBina's door access guide advises for doors on escape routes.
  • Manual override. Reception or the guardhouse needs a button to open a lane for visitors and emergencies.
  • Children and pets. Flap and swing gates use sensors to avoid closing on someone in the lane; ask how they are set.

Condominiums: approval and visitors

In a strata building, lobby turnstiles change common property and affect every resident, so they are a JMB or MC project. ClickBina's condo access card guide describes an access upgrade as one that needs a clear specification, owners' approval where the by-laws require it, and a plan for visitors, deliveries and emergencies. Turnstiles add questions of their own: how food delivery riders, cleaners, contractors and movers get through, and what happens when a resident's card stops working at night.

Installation: floor, cabling and lobby work

Turnstile cabinets are bolted to a solid floor, and power and data cables run between the cabinets and back to the control room, usually under the floor. In a new fit-out, conduits are laid before the floor finish. In an existing lobby, the marble or tiles are cut for trenches and made good, or cabling runs in surface trunking. Each reader and cabinet also needs power; the electrical connection is work for a registered electrical contractor. Plan lobby lighting, CCTV coverage of the lanes and the reception desk position at the same time.

What turnstile gates cost

No ClickBina guide publishes a price for turnstile gates, because gate type, number of lanes, cabinet finish, readers and software vary so widely. These are the published add-on figures that sit around a turnstile project (market estimate 2026, indicative Klang Valley).

What moves a turnstile quote: gate type (tripod is the simplest, full-height and speed gates cost more), the number of lanes and whether one is a wide lane, cabinet material and glass, the readers on each lane, integration with existing access software, trenching and floor make-good, and a maintenance contract.

Turnstiles run thousands of cycles in a busy lobby. A service plan that checks mechanisms, sensors and the fire release, with spare parts on hand, keeps a lane from being taped off for weeks.

Common Questions

How much does a turnstile gate cost in Malaysia?
ClickBina does not publish a turnstile price; it depends on the gate type, lanes, readers and software. For scale, ClickBina's door access guide puts card access at RM800–RM1,600 per door (market estimate 2026).
What is the difference between a tripod turnstile and a speed gate?
A tripod has three rotating arms and is simple and robust. A speed gate (flap or swing barrier) uses retracting flaps or glass panels with sensors, looks smarter in a lobby and handles traffic more smoothly.
Do turnstiles stop tailgating?
They are designed to admit one person per valid entry, but how well they do it depends on the gate type, sensor logic and whether someone responds to alarms.
Can a turnstile use our existing access cards?
Often, if the gate readers match the card technology and the software can be linked. Ask before ordering, or everyone may need new cards.
What happens to turnstiles in a fire?
Gates on an escape route must release and let people out when the fire alarm sounds or the power fails. Settle this with the building's fire safety requirements first.
Does a condo need approval to install lobby turnstiles?
Yes. It changes common property, so it is a JMB or MC project, with owners' approval where the by-laws require it and a plan for visitors and deliveries.
Are turnstiles accessible for wheelchairs?
Plan at least one wide lane, usually a swing barrier, for wheelchairs, prams and goods, with a manual override at reception or the guardhouse.
