Doorbell camera at the door or intercom at the gate? How each works, which one fits a house with a gate and an autogate, and what a gate intercom costs.

For a landed house, the real question is where visitors stand: at the front door or at the gate. A video doorbell is a camera and button at one door that rings your phone through an app, usually over Wi-Fi, and runs on a battery or on wiring. A gate intercom puts a panel at the gate wired to an indoor handset or monitor, works without the internet, and can open an autogate. If the gate is far from the door, as in most terraces, semi-Ds and bungalows, an intercom (or an IP intercom that also rings your phone) usually suits better; a video doorbell suits a door that visitors walk right up to. As an autogate add-on, a gate intercom is typically RM300 – RM800 for audio or RM500 – RM1,500 with a camera (Klang Valley, 2026).
| Option | What it is | Strengths | Weak spots |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plain wired or wireless chime | A button and a bell, no camera | Cheap, simple, nothing to maintain | You still walk to the gate to see who it is |
| Video doorbell | Camera, microphone and button that ring an app | Answer from anywhere, records visitors | Needs Wi-Fi and the maker’s app; batteries need charging |
| Gate intercom, audio | Gate panel wired to an indoor handset | Works without internet; often opens the autogate | You hear the visitor but cannot see them |
| Gate intercom with camera | Gate panel with camera wired to an indoor monitor | See and talk to visitors, open the gate | Cable to the gate; answered indoors only |
| IP video intercom | Networked gate panel that rings indoor monitors and phones | Indoor monitor plus phone answering | Depends on the network and the maker’s service |
Our intercom system guide explains the intercom types in depth. This page is about the decision most landed-house owners are really making: a video doorbell at the door, or an intercom at the gate.
In a condo, visitors reach your door, so a doorbell is where they press. In a landed house, most people stop at the gate: delivery riders, the postman, guests waiting to be let in. A video doorbell on the front door only sees someone who has already come through the gate. That is fine in a house with an open porch or a gate that is normally left open, and useless where the gate is locked.
Wikipedia’s entry on smart doorbells describes the basic idea: the owner uses a smartphone app to watch and talk with the visitor through the doorbell’s built-in camera and microphone, and the doorbells can be either battery operated or wired. Some can open the door remotely when paired with a smart lock.
In practice, three things decide whether one works for you:
An intercom is a wired system: an outdoor panel at the gate, a cable back to the house, and an indoor handset or monitor. Because it does not rely on the internet, it keeps working when the Wi-Fi is down, and a family member who does not use smartphone apps can still answer it. Most can be wired to release an electric lock or trigger an autogate.
The trade-off is the cable to the gate and the fact that a basic system is answered indoors only. IP intercoms bridge the gap by ringing both an indoor monitor and phones, but they bring back the network and account questions of a video doorbell.
Letting a visitor in without walking out is often the main reason people want an intercom. Most gate intercoms can connect to the autogate controller or to an electric lock on a pedestrian gate. That needs a compatible controller and the right wiring, so the autogate and the intercom should be planned together. If the autogate itself is unreliable, see our autogate repair guide first.
A gate panel lives outdoors. Driving rain, afternoon sun on the camera lens and a panel at the wrong height are the usual complaints. Choose a panel made for outdoor use, fit a small hood if the maker offers one, mount it at a height where both adults and a rider on a motorcycle can reach and be seen, and light the gate at night so the camera has something to see.
Good gate lighting also helps security generally; our outdoor and security lighting guide covers motion-sensor lights and weatherproof fittings.
A camera at the gate sees the road and possibly the neighbour’s gate. Angle it to cover your own entrance, not their porch. Wikipedia’s smart doorbell entry also notes that security researchers have raised concerns about some connected doorbells, so keep the app and firmware updated, use a strong password and decide who in the family has access to recordings.
Both options need planning at the cable stage. A wired video doorbell needs a low-voltage supply at the door. A gate intercom needs a cable run from the gate to the house, ideally in conduit laid when the driveway or fence is being built, plus power for the outdoor panel. Anything that connects to the mains is electrical work for a qualified person; the smart home guide on whole-home installation explains planning cable routes early and devices late.
The site publishes intercom prices as autogate add-ons in our intercom system guide (indicative Klang Valley ranges, 2026). Video doorbells are consumer products priced by brand, so they are not listed here.
| Item | Market range (2026) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Gate intercom, audio (autogate add-on) | RM300 – RM800 per system | Gate panel and one indoor handset |
| Gate intercom with camera (autogate add-on) | RM500 – RM1,500 per system | Gate panel and one indoor monitor; a second monitor is extra |
| IP video intercom with phone unlock | Quoted after a site survey | Depends on the network and cabling |

💬 WhatsApp for a quoteA long cable run, trenching across a driveway or adding monitors upstairs moves the price. Installing a video doorbell on an existing wired bell point is a small job; running new power to the gate is not.
WhatsApp us your job details for a quote: the house type, how far the gate is from the door, whether you have an autogate, and whether you want to answer from your phone. We reply within the hour, and the price we agree is a flat price with no hidden charges. If the doorbell or intercom is part of a bigger renovation, we handle whole-house refurbishment and coordinate the trades; a site visit is RM150, waived if you go ahead. See our renovation page.
How we estimated prices: every RM figure is quoted unchanged from the ClickBina intercom system guide; they are typical Klang Valley market ranges for 2026, not fixed rates. Video doorbell prices vary by brand and are not quoted.
