Fixed, removable, retractable or collapsible — and root-set, base-plated or core-drilled. Choosing wrong is how a bollard ends up flat on the tarmac after one delivery lorry. Here is how to spec them properly across the Klang Valley.

Almost every bollard we are asked to install is doing one of four jobs, and knowing which one you are buying decides everything that follows:
A bollard specified for job two and installed where job one was required is the most common failure we get called out to — a bent post, a cracked slab and the thing it was meant to protect damaged anyway.

Two details buyers forget to ask about: wall thickness — two bollards of the same diameter can be very different objects — and whether the post is filled with concrete, which changes both its behaviour and its price. Get both in writing on the quotation.
The fixing decides what the bollard can survive. A magnificent post on a weak fixing simply takes the slab with it:
Before anyone drills or breaks out, find out what is underneath. Car-park decks, podium slabs and basement roofs have structure, waterproofing and services in them, and a bollard fixing that punches a waterproofing membrane creates a leak into the level below that is expensive and awkward to trace — see car park deck coating →. Six decisions, made in this order, produce a specification a supplier can price and you can compare:

Then put quantity, type, material, diameter, wall thickness, height above ground, finish, fixing method and making-good on one sheet, and ask three suppliers to price that identical sheet.
This is where we will disappoint anyone hoping for a table of crash ratings. A bollard sold as “anti-ram”, “high security” or “crash rated” is making a testable claim, and that claim belongs to the manufacturer, tested to a named standard, evidenced by a document. We are not going to print a standard, a class or a rating on this page, because publishing a number that does not match what you are actually being sold would be worse than printing nothing.
What to do instead, in writing, before you buy:
For the overwhelming majority of Klang Valley car parks, shoplots and compounds, honest delineation plus a solidly root-set steel post is exactly the right answer, and nobody needs a certificate for it. The certificate conversation only matters where you are genuinely buying vehicle-attack protection.
The bollard is the cheap part. The installation is the job, and a quotation should show all of it:
Ask for the contractor’s current CIDB registration and grade as part of the tender, the same as you would for any other site works.
A bollard is a permanent obstruction, and obstructions have owners. Three checks save a great deal of trouble:
And never block a fire-appliance access route or a hydrant approach to solve a parking problem. If a route has to be closed to ordinary traffic but open to emergency vehicles, that is precisely the case for a removable or retractable post with a controlled key — not a fixed one.
