Fixed, removable, retractable or collapsible — and root-set, base-plated or core-drilled. Choosing wrong is how a bollard ends up flat on the tarmac after one delivery lorry. Here is how to spec them properly across the Klang Valley.

A bollard is a short post fixed into the ground to stop or steer vehicles — protecting a shopfront, a glass facade, a gas meter, a loading bay, a pedestrian route or a condo’s landscaped edge. The choice comes down to four decisions: whether it must ever move (fixed, removable, retractable or collapsible), what it is made of, how it is fixed into the ground, and whether it is there to delineate or genuinely to stop a vehicle. We do not publish a bollard price list: the figure depends on type, material, quantity, and what is under the surface where it has to go. What a bollard is actually for

Almost every bollard we are asked to install is doing one of four jobs, and knowing which one you are buying decides everything that follows:

  • Protecting something fragile or dangerous. A glass shopfront, a gas meter, an electrical riser cabinet, a fire hydrant, a column in a car park, a compressor. Here the bollard has to physically resist a vehicle, not just warn the driver.
  • Controlling where vehicles go. Keeping delivery lorries off a landscaped verge, stopping cars mounting a pedestrian walkway, protecting a five-foot way, defining the edge of a loading bay.
  • Reserving access that must sometimes open. A fire-appliance route, a service lane, a private parking bay, an emergency gate — blocked most of the time, opened on demand. This is what removable, retractable and collapsible bollards exist for.
  • Looking deliberate. On a hotel forecourt, a clubhouse or a condo entrance, the bollard is also a finish, and the choice of material and lighting is part of the building’s appearance.

A bollard specified for job two and installed where job one was required is the most common failure we get called out to — a bent post, a cracked slab and the thing it was meant to protect damaged anyway.

Two details buyers forget to ask about: wall thickness — two bollards of the same diameter can be very different objects — and whether the post is filled with concrete, which changes both its behaviour and its price. Get both in writing on the quotation.

How bollards are fixed into the ground

The fixing decides what the bollard can survive. A magnificent post on a weak fixing simply takes the slab with it:

  • Root-set (cast in). The post continues below ground into a concrete foundation. The strongest arrangement and the standard where a bollard genuinely has to stop something. It means breaking out the surface, so the surface has to be made good afterwards — that is part of the job, not an extra.
  • Base-plated. A flanged plate bolted to the existing slab with anchors. Faster, tidier, reversible, and entirely dependent on the slab beneath. On a thin or cracked slab the anchors pull out and you lose a piece of concrete with them.
  • Core-drilled and grouted. A hole cored into the slab, the post grouted in. A middle course — neat, reasonably strong, and it still relies on slab thickness.
  • Ground socket (for removable posts). A sleeve cast into the ground that accepts and locks the post. Drainage of the socket is the whole game — a socket that fills with silt or water stops accepting the bollard within a season.
  • Surface-mounted flexible bases. Bonded or lightly anchored. Delineation only.

Before anyone drills or breaks out, find out what is underneath. Car-park decks, podium slabs and basement roofs have structure, waterproofing and services in them, and a bollard fixing that punches a waterproofing membrane creates a leak into the level below that is expensive and awkward to trace — see car park deck coating →. Getting the spec right before you order

Six decisions, made in this order, produce a specification a supplier can price and you can compare:

Then put quantity, type, material, diameter, wall thickness, height above ground, finish, fixing method and making-good on one sheet, and ask three suppliers to price that identical sheet.

Car parks, shoplots, factories and condo compounds

  • Retail shopfronts. Glass frontages and forward-facing parking bays are a bad combination; bollards along the frontage are usually cheaper than one broken shopfront. Fold this into the fit-out rather than adding it afterwards — see retail fit-out cost →.
  • Factories and warehouses. Racking ends, roller-shutter jambs, compressor sets, switch rooms, LPG and gas installations and loading-dock corners are the usual targets, with forklifts doing most of the damage. Root-set steel is the default here.
  • Multi-storey and basement car parks. Columns, lift lobbies, ticket equipment, sprinkler risers and pedestrian routes. Watch the deck construction before choosing a fixing.
  • Condo and strata compounds. Guardhouse approaches, landscaped edges, fire-appliance access routes and reserved bays. Bollards here interact with parking rules and access control — see condo parking disputes → and JMB access-card powers →.
  • Gated schemes and private lanes. Removable or retractable posts on a shared access road — convenient for residents, and a genuine argument if emergency access is impeded. Read gated & guarded communities → before blocking a shared road.

Protection vs delineation — an honest word about ratings

This is where we will disappoint anyone hoping for a table of crash ratings. A bollard sold as “anti-ram”, “high security” or “crash rated” is making a testable claim, and that claim belongs to the manufacturer, tested to a named standard, evidenced by a document. We are not going to print a standard, a class or a rating on this page, because publishing a number that does not match what you are actually being sold would be worse than printing nothing.

What to do instead, in writing, before you buy:

  • Ask the supplier which standard the bollard is tested to and at what rating, in the manufacturer’s own words.
  • Ask for the test certificate or test report, not a marketing sheet.
  • Ask what foundation that rating assumes — a rating is a rating of the bollard and its foundation together, and installing a rated post on an unrated fixing throws the rating away.
  • If none of that can be produced, treat the bollard as delineation — something that tells a driver where not to go — and specify accordingly.

For the overwhelming majority of Klang Valley car parks, shoplots and compounds, honest delineation plus a solidly root-set steel post is exactly the right answer, and nobody needs a certificate for it. The certificate conversation only matters where you are genuinely buying vehicle-attack protection.

What a proper supply-and-install job includes

The bollard is the cheap part. The installation is the job, and a quotation should show all of it:

  • Setting out on site with you, marked and agreed before anything is cut — including a check for services and structure below.
  • Breaking out or coring the surface, and disposing of the arisings.
  • Foundation to the specified size, with the curing time it needs before load.
  • Setting the post plumb, at consistent height and consistent spacing — a row of bollards at slightly different heights looks wrong forever.
  • Making good the tarmac, paving, screed or finish around each base, matching what was there.
  • Drainage and waterproofing detail where a socket or sleeve is installed, or where the fixing is on a deck over occupied space.
  • Finishing: touching up galvanising or coating disturbed during installation, and applying reflective banding where specified.
  • Handover: keys for removable and lockable posts, spare parts, and the manufacturer’s documents.

Ask for the contractor’s current CIDB registration and grade as part of the tender, the same as you would for any other site works.

Permission: who has to agree before a bollard goes in

A bollard is a permanent obstruction, and obstructions have owners. Three checks save a great deal of trouble:

  • Is the ground yours? The road reserve, the five-foot way and shared access roads are not your land to block, whatever is convenient. Check with your local council — DBKL, MBPJ, MBSA and the rest — before fixing anything outside your own boundary. A business premise licence or a renovation approval does not cover it.
  • Is it common property? In a strata development the compound, the driveway and the car park are normally common property, which the management body maintains and controls — so a bollard is the committee’s decision, not an individual owner’s.   • Are you a tenant? Fixing into a landlord’s slab is an alteration. Get written consent and agree who removes it, and who makes good, at the end of the term — commercial property tenancy → covers the ground rules.

And never block a fire-appliance access route or a hydrant approach to solve a parking problem. If a route has to be closed to ordinary traffic but open to emergency vehicles, that is precisely the case for a removable or retractable post with a controlled key — not a fixed one.

Damage, maintenance and replacement

Bollards are hit. That is their job. What matters is what happens afterwards:

  • Inspect the base, not the post. A bollard that looks slightly off vertical has usually damaged its foundation or the slab, and that damage is what fails next time.
  • Repair coating damage promptly. Every chip in galvanising or powder coating is where corrosion starts, and Malaysian humidity is unforgiving about it.
  • Clear removable sockets. Silt, sand and leaves fill them; a socket nobody clears is a bollard nobody can put back.
  • Service moving parts. Hinges, locks, sleeves, pumps and controls on retractable units all wear. Put them on the schedule with the gates — see planned preventive maintenance →.
  • Replace like for like, and keep a spare. Ranges are discontinued, and a mismatched replacement post in a row of six is visible from the road.
  • Record repeated impacts. If one bollard is hit again and again, the layout is wrong. Move the line, add visibility, or change the traffic route — do not just keep replacing the post.

How much does a bollard cost in Malaysia?
We do not publish a bollard price list, because the figure moves with type, material, diameter and wall thickness, quantity, and what is under the ground where it has to go. A removable post in a new socket on a deck is a different job from six root-set steel posts across a tarmac frontage. Fixed, removable or retractable — which do I need?
Fixed if the line should never open, and it is the strongest and cheapest to maintain. Removable if access is needed occasionally and someone will always have the key. Retractable if the lane is used several times a day and you can maintain a below-ground sleeve. Collapsible where there is nowhere to store a removed post. Be honest at this step — a fixed bollard on a route that really needs opening gets cut off with a grinder.
Will a bollard actually stop a car?
Only if it was designed and installed to. A rating belongs to the manufacturer, tested to a named standard, and it assumes a particular foundation — so ask for the standard, the rating and the test document, and ask what foundation the rating assumes. If none of that can be produced, treat the bollard as delineation, which tells a driver where not to go, rather than as vehicle protection.
How are bollards fixed into the ground?
