A rule of thumb: galvanised for dry, general-traffic areas on a budget; stainless where water, food or hygiene are constant; cast or ductile iron wherever vehicles pass; and FRP where corrosion or slip is the main enemy. The single most important spec on a commercial grating is the load it is rated to carry. Gratings and covers are graded against recognised load standards, and the grade has to match the heaviest thing that will ever cross it — not the average. A cover is only as safe as its worst-case wheel load:

The classic and dangerous mistake is buying a pretty, cheap grating for a spot where trucks or forklifts actually run. It looks fine on day one and cracks under the first heavy axle — sometimes with someone standing on it. When a car park, ramp or yard is involved, we specify to the vehicle, never to the price.
It helps to keep the parts straight, because people use the words loosely. A channel drain (or trench drain) is the long, narrow linear drain set into a floor or yard to catch surface water across a line — the standard solution for car-park aprons, wash bays, warehouse floors and F&B kitchens. Its grating is the removable top that lets you sweep, drive or walk across while water falls through the slots. A drain cover or manhole cover is the solid or slotted lid over an access point, gully or trap. Each comes in the four materials and the range of load classes above, in standard widths and depths — or custom-made where the opening or the load is non-standard. Getting the width, slot pattern and frame right is what stops a grating rocking, trapping heels, or letting debris straight through into the drain it is meant to protect.
Standard-size gratings and covers are cheaper, faster and easy to replace, and they suit most walkways, bays and channels — so we use them wherever they fit. But commercial sites throw up openings that no catalogue size covers: an odd-width trench, a heavy-duty span over a wide pit, a recessed “tray” cover you fill with matching tile so the lid disappears into the floor, or a bespoke frame to marry a new grating to an old drain. That is where fabrication earns its place — a grating cut, welded and load-rated to your actual drawing rather than forced to fit. Custom work is quoted per drawing because the span, the load class and the finish drive the cost. Gratings sit on top of drains, and often the drain itself is the real job. Water that pools on a floor or apron instead of running to the drain is almost always a fall problem, not a grating problem. A drain and its channel have to slope steadily towards the outlet; if the floor was laid flat, has settled, or the drain invert is level or reversed, water sits and stagnates — the puddle by the car-park bay, the wet patch in the warehouse, the standing water in the kitchen that never quite dries. The fix is not a bigger grating; it is re-establishing the fall — screeding or re-levelling the surface towards the channel, or re-laying the drain invert so it runs. On an F&B or wash-down floor this matters doubly, because ponding water plus grease is a slip hazard and a smell source. We diagnose whether you have a fall problem, a blockage or an undersized drain before quoting, because the three have very different fixes and only one of them is “buy a new grating.”
A drain only works if it is clear, and commercial drains silt up fast — leaves and sand in a perimeter longkang, grease in a kitchen channel, cement wash during nearby renovation, general debris in a car-park trench. Left alone, a silted drain overflows in the next storm and floods exactly the area it was built to protect. Regular desilting and clearing — lifting the gratings, removing the silt and grease, flushing the run and checking the traps — keeps drainage doing its job, and it is far cheaper than a flood clean-up. For sites with a heavy kitchen, clearing the drain works hand in hand with servicing the grease trap so grease never reaches the channel in the first place. A drainage install that lasts is about the bits you cannot see once it is finished. A correct supply-and-install sets the channel to a true fall towards the outlet; beds and haunches it in concrete so it does not shift under load; sets the frame flush and level with the surrounding floor so the grating sits without rocking and there is no lip to trip on or catch a wheel; matches the grating’s load class to the real traffic; and leaves the run accessible so gratings lift out for cleaning. Cheap installs skip the concrete haunching, set the frame proud or low, or drop in an under-rated grating to save a few ringgit — and every one of those shows up within months as a rocking cover, a ponding puddle or a cracked grating.
