Which biometric reader suits a Malaysian office door — the environmental limits of each, what the market charges, and the data-protection duty that applies to both.

Both technologies do the same job — they check that the person at the door is on a list, without a card that can be lent, lost or cloned. They differ in what they need from the environment and in what they ask of the people using them.
Fingerprint needs contact and a readable ridge pattern. Face needs a view of the face and enough light to see it. That single difference drives almost everything else: cost, speed, where the unit can be mounted, what defeats it, and how staff feel about it. Everything below is the detail behind that sentence.

Search for either technology and half the results you get are residential locksets — a handle-and-cylinder lock with a fingerprint pad or a small camera built into it. They are a legitimate product and much cheaper, but they are not the same thing as an access-controlled door, and comparing their prices to the table above is comparing two different jobs.

A keypad or fingerprint reader on a gate is a third thing again — priced at the gate rather than at a door, and covered on that page.
The differences that matter for an office: a lockset carries its own battery and its own small user list, is administered at the door rather than centrally, generally has no exit button, no backup power from the building, no interface to anything else, and no meaningful audit trail you could hand to anyone. For a store room or a director’s office in a small business that can be entirely sufficient. For a main entrance with staff turnover, it is not. A fingerprint reader compares the ridge pattern it can see against the template it stored at enrolment. Anything that changes what it can see is a failed read, and in Malaysian offices and sites the usual culprits are mundane.

None of these are reasons to avoid fingerprint. They are reasons to test it on your own doorway with your own staff before committing, which is a request any serious supplier will accommodate.
A face reader needs a usable view of the face, which makes its weak points environmental rather than physical.

Face terminals also make people ask questions they never ask about a card reader, and those questions are legitimate. The rest of this page deals with them.
Every supplier will tell you their unit is fast. Rather than argue about specifications, measure the thing you actually care about: how long it takes twenty people to get through your door at 8:45am.
Set up the demo at the real door, in the real light, with real staff — including the ones with worn fingers, the tall one, the short one, and the one who wears glasses. Have someone time the queue rather than an individual read. A unit that reads one person impressively fast and then makes every third person try twice is slower in practice than a unit that never fails, and a queue at the entrance is the complaint that gets a system ripped out six months after it was installed.
That demo also tells you whether you need two readers at the main entrance instead of one, which is a decision far cheaper to make before the cable is run.
This is the part of the comparison that has nothing to do with which technology reads faster, and it applies to both of them equally.
Read the second block carefully, because two things in it are routinely misquoted. The condition named first is explicit consent — and the wording is explicit consent, not written consent. And explicit consent is not the only route in the provision; other conditions sit alongside it. A supplier who tells you either that a signature is legally mandatory or that you can simply mandate enrolment because it is a workplace is oversimplifying in opposite directions.
So the sensible position for an employer is not complicated, and it does not need a compliance product sold with the hardware:

It happens on almost every rollout, and handling it badly is what turns a hardware project into a personnel problem. Two things help.
The first is engineering: specify a second credential type from the start. Nearly every biometric terminal will also read a card or a PIN, and a door that accepts both costs very little more than a door that accepts one. That gives you an answer for the person who cannot be read reliably as well as for the person who would rather not be, and it gives you a working door on the morning the biometric database is unavailable.
The second is procedural: decide in advance who handles the conversation and what the alternative is, and write it down before the terminal goes up. Whether a particular refusal can be managed in a particular workplace is an employment-law question about your own contracts and your own circumstances, so take advice on it rather than treating the hardware manual as the answer.
Ask, before you buy, exactly where the biometric templates are stored: on the door terminal itself, on a controller in a cabinet, on a PC in the office, or in a supplier’s cloud. That answer determines who can reach them, what happens when the unit is replaced, and what you would have to do if it went wrong.
Two practical consequences. Ask what happens to the stored templates when a terminal is decommissioned, returned under warranty or replaced — a swapped-out unit with a live user database in it is a loose end. And ask who at the supplier can access your system remotely for support, because remote support is normal and worth having, but it should be a named arrangement rather than a surprise.
