A room of your own inside the office: where to put it, how private to make it and what it costs.

A private office or director's room works when it sits where the owner can see the floor, uses glass at the front for light and solid walls behind for privacy and sound, has its own aircon control, and fits a desk, a small meeting corner and closed storage without feeling cramped. Build it only if the work really needs privacy, and spend on the wall and the door rather than on decoration. ClickBina's partition guide lists aluminium-framed glass at RM45 – RM80 per sq ft of wall (indicative 2026, Klang Valley); a site visit is RM150, waived if you go ahead.
Every enclosed room takes floor from the team and costs money twice: once to build and again to remove at the end of the lease. A private office earns its place when the person inside regularly handles confidential calls, staff matters, client negotiations or long periods of focused work. If the owner mostly walks the floor and meets in the meeting room anyway, a good desk facing the room is often enough. ClickBina's small office interior design guide covers that choice for compact offices; ClickBina's office interior design guide covers how enclosed rooms fit into a larger floor plan.
The position decides how the room is used. The common options each have a trade-off:
| Position | What it gives | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Corner with windows | Daylight, a view, a sense of seniority | Takes the best daylight away from the team |
| Back of the office, facing the floor | Oversight of the team and the door | Needs a glass front to see out |
| Next to the meeting room | Easy for client meetings | Visitors walk past the working area |
| Beside the entrance | Owner greets visitors and controls access | Noise and traffic at the door |
In most small and medium offices, the back of the office with a glass front facing the floor is the best balance: the owner sees the team and the door, and the daylight from the windows still reaches the desks.
A private office is usually built from partitions rather than brick. Glass at the front keeps light moving through the office and lets the owner see out; solid walls at the sides and back give privacy and somewhere to put storage, artwork and a screen. The partition wall guide prices aluminium-framed glass at RM45 – RM80 per sq ft of wall and frameless tempered glass at RM80 – RM150; a solid door with its frame adds RM800 – RM2,500 depending on material.
A full-glass room looks sharp but offers the least privacy and the least wall for storage; a fully solid room is private but dark and cut off from the team. A glass front with solid sides is the usual answer, with a frosted band or film on the glass at seated eye level.
Privacy in a glass-fronted room comes from film, blinds and where the desk faces. Frosted or decorative film at seated eye level hides screens and faces while letting light through; blinds between the glass or on the inside let the owner close the room completely for a sensitive meeting. ClickBina's office blinds and window film guide compares roller and venetian blinds and privacy film. Place the desk so the screen faces a solid wall, not the glass.
Most complaints about private offices are about sound: staff outside can hear the phone calls, or the owner can hear the whole office. ClickBina's office acoustic privacy guide explains why: sound travels over partitions that stop at the false ceiling, through gaps around the door and through single-glazed glass. The fixes are a partition taken up to the slab or treated above the ceiling, a sound-rated double-skin wall where it matters, seals around the door, and soft finishes inside the room.
Most director's rooms need three zones: the desk, a small meeting corner with two or four chairs or a round table, and closed storage for files. Put the desk facing the door or the glass, with the storage wall behind it. Keep the meeting corner near the door so visitors do not walk round the desk. Built-in joinery along one wall holds files, a safe and a printer out of sight; ClickBina's commercial cabinetry guide covers office joinery and materials.
An enclosed room needs its own cooling control, or it will be too cold when the rest of the office is busy and too warm when the door is shut. ClickBina's office aircon guide notes that cellular offices and meeting rooms usually need their own control. Light the desk evenly without glare on the screen and add a warmer light over the meeting corner. Plan power and data at the desk, at the meeting corner for a screen, and at the storage wall for the printer and router.
A director's room is often where clients are received, so its finishes can be a step above the open office: a timber or fluted feature wall behind the desk, carpet or a rug to soften sound, better door hardware, and concealed storage. Keep them consistent with the rest of the office so the room looks part of the company, not a separate showroom. ClickBina's feature wall guide compares wall materials.
A private office is priced item by item: the partitions, the door, the privacy treatment, the sound upgrade, and the joinery and finishes inside. These are published ClickBina indicative ranges:
