Bi-parting automatic glass sliding door half open at a shoplot clinic entrance

The most common automatic door is the automatic sliding door: a glass (or solid) door leaf hung from a motorised operator in a header box above the opening; a sensor detects people approaching and the operator slides the door open, then closes it once the doorway is clear. Single-slide, bi-parting and telescopic versions suit shop fronts, clinics, offices, condo lobbies and accessible entrances. Price depends on the operator, the glass, the opening size and any access control. No ClickBina guide publishes an automatic door price; for comparison, a manual aluminium sliding door is RM800 – RM2,000 per 2-panel set and card access adds RM800 – RM1,600 per door on ClickBina's guides (indicative 2026, Klang Valley).

How an automatic sliding door works

Every automatic sliding door has the same four parts. The operator is a motor, gearbox, belt and control unit in a header box above the opening. The door leaves hang from rollers on a track in that header and are steadied by a floor guide. The sensors tell the controller when someone is coming and when the doorway is still occupied. The control panel or switch sets the mode: automatic, exit only, hold open, or locked.

Because the door slides rather than swings, it needs no space in front of the doorway and nobody has to push it. That is why it is the standard entrance for clinics, pharmacies, supermarkets and busy shops, and the simplest fix for an entrance that wheelchair users, parents with prams and elderly customers find hard to open. ClickBina's OKU access guide notes that heavy door closers are a common barrier at shop entrances.

Sensors and safety

  • Motion sensors on the header detect people approaching and open the door. They can be set to ignore people walking past the shopfront.
  • Presence sensors watch the doorway itself and keep the door open while someone is standing in it.
  • Safety beams or edge sensors stop and reverse the door if it meets an obstruction while closing.
  • Adjustment matters. A door that opens for every passer-by wastes aircon; one set too narrow closes on slow walkers, trolleys and children.

Safety glass, visibility markings at eye level on clear glass, and correct closing speed and force are the basics an installer should confirm in writing.

Where automatic doors make sense

  • Clinics and pharmacies: hands-free entry, accessible for patients, keeps aircon in.
  • Shops and supermarkets: busy entrances where a swing door is held open all day.
  • Offices and showrooms: a reception entrance, often tied to access control after hours.
  • Condo and office lobbies: residents and visitors with bags, prams and trolleys.
  • F&B with aircon: keeps cold air in without staff holding the door.

For a small shop with light traffic, a well-adjusted manual glass door on a floor spring may be enough; ClickBina's frameless glass shopfront door guide explains how closing speed is set.

Installing on a new or existing shopfront

An automatic door needs a header above the opening strong enough to carry the operator and the hanging leaves, a level floor for the guide, a power point for the operator, and room beside the opening for the leaves to slide into. In a new fit-out this is designed in from the start. On an existing shopfront, the fixed glass panels, the head of the frame and the floor finish often need changing; a frameless swing door on a floor spring cannot simply be motorised as a slider. Mall and building management usually have rules on shopfront changes, so get their approval first; our shopfront options guide covers frontage types and approvals.

Access control, night locking and escape routes

An automatic door can be tied to a card reader, keypad or face reader so it opens only for authorised people after hours, and many operators include an electric lock for night mode. Two points need settling before ordering:

  • Escape route. If the door is on a fire escape route, it must let people out when the power or the system fails. ClickBina's door access guide explains fail-safe and fail-secure locks and why escape doors need settling first.
  • Night security. A glass entrance is not a security barrier; a grille or shutter outside is still common for street shops.

Power cuts and battery backup

Without power, the operator stops. Ask what the door does in a power cut: some operators carry a battery that opens the door once or keeps it running for a while; others can be pushed open by hand once the motor releases. For a clinic or lobby, a battery backup is worth the cost. Find out how the door is locked and unlocked manually during a long outage, and who holds the key.

What an automatic sliding door costs

No ClickBina guide publishes a price for an automatic sliding door, because the operator brand, door type, glass, opening size and access control vary so much. These are ClickBina's published comparison and add-on figures (indicative 2026, Klang Valley).

Common Questions

How much does an automatic sliding door cost in Malaysia?
ClickBina does not publish an automatic door price; it depends on the operator, door type, glass and opening size. For comparison, a manual aluminium sliding door is RM800–RM2,000 per 2-panel set on ClickBina's guides.
Can my existing glass door be made automatic?
A swing door on a floor spring cannot simply be motorised as a slider. The shopfront usually needs a header for the operator and space beside the opening for the leaves.
What happens to an automatic door in a power cut?
The operator stops. Some have a battery that opens the door or keeps it running for a while; others can be pushed open by hand. Ask before ordering, especially for clinics and lobbies.
Is an automatic door safe for children and elderly people?
Yes when presence sensors and safety beams are set correctly and tested, so the door will not close on someone in the doorway. Correct closing speed and force are part of the setup.
Can an automatic door work with a card reader?
Yes. Card, keypad or face access can control it after hours; ClickBina's door access guide puts card access at RM800–RM1,600 per door. Escape-route rules must be settled first.
Single slide or bi-parting?
Single slide suits narrow openings with space on one side; bi-parting suits wider entrances with space on both sides. Telescopic leaves suit wide openings with little side space.
How often does an automatic door need servicing?
Regular cleaning of the track and sensors, and a periodic service so rollers, belts and sensors are checked before they fail. Busy entrances need it more often.
