Baffle & Aluminium Feature Ceilings
Baffle, Strip, Open-Cell & Stretch Ceilings (2026)

Commercial feature ceilings that hide the services without sealing them away: what each type does and costs.

Parallel wood-grain aluminium baffle blades under a black-painted slab in a cafe

A baffle ceiling is a row of vertical aluminium, timber-look or acoustic blades hung below the slab, so the ceiling reads as lines while the services stay reachable above; linear strip, open-cell grid and stretch ceilings are the other common commercial feature ceilings. They suit cafes, shops, offices and lobbies where a flat plasterboard ceiling would hide too much or look too plain. ClickBina's guides publish an aluminium strip ceiling at about RM18 per sq ft installed and feature ceilings at RM18–RM30+ per sq ft (indicative 2026, Klang Valley). A site visit is RM150, waived if you go ahead.

The four commercial feature ceilings

Open-cell gridA lattice of aluminium cells in a suspended gridOffices and retail where sprinklers and air must pass through
StretchA PVC or fabric membrane stretched on a perimeter trackFeature areas, backlit panels, glossy or printed ceilings

All four are variations on the idea Wikipedia describes for a dropped ceiling: a secondary ceiling hung below the structural one, created to hide piping, wiring and ductwork while allowing access for repairs and inspections. The difference is how much they hide and how they are opened.

Choosing between them starts with three questions. How much of the ceiling void should stay visible: all of it, some of it, or none? How often will someone need to reach the aircon, fire services and cabling above? And what will the space be like to clean and to sit in: greasy, dusty, humid or noisy? A cafe with an exposed slab and busy lunch crowds, a clinic corridor and a showroom reception each land on a different answer, and many fit-outs use two systems, for example baffles over the dining area and a sealed ceiling over the kitchen.

Baffle ceilings

Baffles are blades, usually aluminium with a powder-coat or wood-grain film, sometimes acoustic felt or timber, hung on a carrier system in straight rows. Looking along the rows you see a solid ceiling; looking across them you see between the blades to a dark-painted slab. The look is popular in cafes and shops that want the height and energy of an exposed ceiling without the clutter.

  • Blade depth and spacing decide how much of the slab and the services is visible; deeper, closer blades hide more.
  • Paint the slab and services above in a dark colour first, so the gaps read as shadow instead of pipework.
  • Lights, speakers and sprinkler heads are fitted between blades, so their positions must be set out with the blade rows.
  • Acoustic felt baffles also absorb sound; aluminium baffles on their own do little for echo.

For noise, the noisy cafe guide explains how baffles or rafts hung between services bring down reverberation without giving up an exposed-ceiling look.

Linear strip ceilings

Strip ceilings are flat aluminium planks clipped into carriers, side by side, with or without a small gap between them. They are closed like a plaster ceiling but can be unclipped for access, and aluminium does not sag in humidity or rot when wet. That makes them a common choice for covered walkways, car porches, corridors and semi-outdoor areas. The car porch ceiling guide compares aluminium strip with PVC and calcium silicate boards for outdoor use.

Open-cell grid ceilings

An open-cell ceiling is a lattice of small square or rectangular aluminium cells sitting in a suspended grid. It gives a finished, even ceiling plane, yet air, light and sprinkler spray pass through, and the whole panel lifts out for access. It is common in retail and offices where a closed ceiling would need many access hatches.

Open-cell and other grid ceilings collect dust and are hard to wipe, so they are a poor choice above food preparation or in treatment rooms; food premises and clinics usually need a sealed, washable ceiling in those zones.

Stretch ceilings

A stretch ceiling is a thin PVC or fabric membrane stretched tight onto a track fixed around the room's edge. It can be matt, glossy, printed or translucent with lights behind it, which is its main appeal for feature areas, showrooms and reception ceilings. It is not a structural ceiling: sharp objects puncture it, lights and diffusers need proper frames, and the membrane must be installed and re-tensioned with the system's own tools.

Planning the services above

Every feature ceiling is really a coordination job. Before the ceiling is ordered, the aircon ducting and diffusers, sprinkler heads, smoke detectors, lights, speakers, CCTV and access points must all be positioned. The ceiling layout then works around them. A late change to a sprinkler position can mean re-cutting blades or cells that were made to size.

  • Set the ceiling height after the lowest duct or beam is known.
  • Keep access to valves, dampers, fire services and aircon units; decide which panels are removable.
  • Paint the soffit before the ceiling goes up if any of it will be visible.
  • Check the landlord's or mall's ceiling rules for tenants before committing to a design.

The office ceiling guide explains the same access questions for mineral fibre, plasterboard and open ceilings.

Acoustics and cleaning

Metal ceilings reflect sound unless they are perforated with an acoustic backing, or combined with absorbent felt or board. Wikipedia notes that acoustic balance was an early objective of dropped ceilings, sometimes achieved by adding insulation above the panels. If echo is a concern, plan absorption from the start; the wood wool acoustic panel guide covers a tough absorbent board that is often combined with feature ceilings.

For cleaning, strip and stretch ceilings wipe down; baffles and open-cell grids collect dust on every edge and need periodic vacuuming or removal for cleaning, which matters in kitchens and clinics.

What feature ceilings cost

Feature ceilings are quoted per project, because the system, finish, height and services decide the price. These are the related published lines (indicative 2026, Klang Valley):

Common Questions

What is a baffle ceiling?
Rows of vertical blades, usually aluminium or acoustic felt, hung below the slab. It gives a lined ceiling while keeping services visible and reachable.
Do aluminium baffles reduce noise?
Plain aluminium blades do little for echo. Felt baffles, perforated panels with acoustic backing, or absorbent boards are needed for that.
Is an open-cell ceiling suitable for a restaurant kitchen?
Usually not. Grid ceilings collect dust and are hard to clean; food preparation areas generally need a sealed, washable ceiling.
What is a stretch ceiling?
A PVC or fabric membrane stretched onto a perimeter track. It can be glossy, printed or backlit, but it punctures if struck.
How much does an aluminium strip ceiling cost?
ClickBina's car porch ceiling guide lists aluminium strip at about RM18 per sq ft installed (indicative 2026, Klang Valley).
Why paint the slab above a baffle ceiling?
Because it shows between the blades. A dark slab makes the gaps read as shadow instead of pipes and ducts.
Can I install a feature ceiling in a mall unit?
Usually, within the mall's tenant fit-out rules. Check its ceiling, fire services and access requirements before designing.
