A tough, textured acoustic board for ceilings and walls: what it does, where it works and how it is installed.

A wood wool acoustic panel is a board of long, thin wood strands bonded with cement or magnesite, with an open, textured face that soaks up echo; it is tough enough for ceilings and lower walls in cafes, gyms, studios, classrooms and offices, and it can be painted. It reduces reverberation inside a room; it does not stop sound travelling to the neighbours. ClickBina does not publish a wood wool price; for comparison, a flat gypsum board ceiling is RM8–RM11 per sq ft installed (indicative 2026, Klang Valley). A site visit is RM150, waived if you go ahead.
Wood wool is long, fine shavings of wood. Wikipedia's entry on wood wool explains that when these fibres are bonded with cement or magnesite, bonded wood wool boards are produced, and that such slabs are considered environmentally friendly construction and insulation materials because they do not contain organic binders. The same entry records that wood wool cement boards were being widely produced by the early twentieth century in Europe, so this is an old material that has come back into fashion.
The acoustic version leaves the strands visible on the face. The rough, porous surface is what absorbs sound: sound waves enter the gaps between the strands and lose energy instead of bouncing back into the room. The look, a woven straw-like texture in natural grey, beige or any painted colour, is popular in cafes and offices with exposed ceilings.
Two acoustic problems are often confused. Reverberation is echo inside a room: hard floors, glass and bare concrete bounce sound around until conversation becomes tiring. Sound insulation is stopping sound passing through a wall or floor to the next room. Absorbent panels like wood wool deal with the first. They make a noisy cafe or a classroom calmer, but they will not stop a neighbour hearing your music.
ClickBina's acoustic ceiling and soundproofing guide explains that blocking sound between rooms needs mass, airtight seals and decoupled layers, not absorbent panels. The noisy cafe guide shows how absorption is planned in a food and beverage space.
| Panel | Strengths | Weaknesses |
|---|---|---|
| Wood wool (cement or magnesite bonded) | Tough, impact resistant; paintable; mineral binder; industrial texture | Heavy; rough face collects dust; needs solid fixing |
| Fabric-wrapped panel | Soft look; many colours; good absorption | Fabric stains and fades; easily damaged at low level |
| PET felt panel | Light; easy to cut and shape; cheap | Can look budget; dents |
| Mineral fibre ceiling tile | Standard office suspended ceilings; easy access | Grid look; sags or stains if wet |
| Wood slat on felt | Warm, premium look on walls | Absorbs mainly through the gaps; costs more |
Wood wool's advantage is toughness. In a gym, a playroom or a sports hall, a ball or an elbow that would dent felt or tear fabric simply bounces off. That is why it is common on the upper walls and ceilings of spaces where things get knocked.
The trade-offs are weight and texture. A wood wool ceiling needs a stronger fixing system than a light felt raft, and the coarse face is not for everyone: it reads as industrial or natural, which suits a cafe or a creative office but can look unfinished in a formal reception. Many projects therefore combine materials, with wood wool on the ceiling where it is out of reach of hands and fabric or slat panels on the walls at eye level, where a softer, cleaner look is wanted.
In an office, wood wool is often mixed with other ceilings. The office ceiling guide compares mineral fibre, plasterboard and open ceilings.
Because the binder is mineral, wood wool boards cope with ordinary Malaysian humidity better than many fibrous panels, but they are not a wet-area finish: a roof leak or an aircon tray overflow onto the board will stain it and can weaken it. Fix leaks and condensation first, keep boards away from direct water, and ask the supplier for the product's rating if it is to go in a semi-outdoor area.
For fire, ask for the product's fire classification in writing and check it against what the building needs, especially in a shop, a restaurant or a mall unit where the landlord and the local authority set requirements for ceiling and wall linings.
Wood wool boards are heavy for their size, so they are screwed, not glued, to a solid substrate: directly to concrete, onto timber or metal battens, or laid into a heavy-duty suspended grid. Fixing on battens leaves an air gap behind the board, which improves absorption at lower frequencies; some installers add mineral wool in that gap. Screw heads are usually left visible or painted to match, and the joints are either tight butt joints or a deliberate shadow gap.
On a ceiling, plan the lights, sprinklers, aircon diffusers and access points before the boards go up. Cutting openings afterwards leaves ragged edges, and services above a fixed board ceiling need access hatches.
The boards can be spray-painted. The paint must be thin and sprayed, not rolled, so it colours the strands without filling the gaps between them; a thick coat seals the surface and reduces absorption. Dust settles on the rough face, so in kitchens and dusty spaces plan for occasional vacuuming with a soft brush. Wood wool is not a surface for grease or splashing near cooking lines.
ClickBina does not publish a wood wool price, because board thickness, finish, brand and the fixing system vary widely. These related ceiling and partition lines are published (indicative 2026, Klang Valley):
| Item | Indicative price | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Flat gypsum board ceiling, installed | RM8 – RM11 per sq ft | Office ceiling guide |
| Calcium silicate board ceiling, installed | RM10 – RM16 per sq ft | Office ceiling guide |
| Double-skin gypsum partition with cavity insulation (sound build) | RM28 – RM38 per sq ft | Acoustic ceiling & soundproofing guide |
