Bamboo Charcoal Wall Panels
What the Board Really Is

Sold as a natural bamboo product, bamboo charcoal board is mostly plastic. Here is what is inside it, which claims hold up, how it is installed and where it works.

Bamboo charcoal wall board is mainly plastic, not bamboo. One manufacturer describes it as bamboo charcoal powder and PVC, heated and extruded, with a PVC decorative film on the face; other sellers call their version wood-plastic composite. Judge it as a plastic-rich panel: it suits large feature walls, TV walls and shop interiors on a flat, dry wall, it is glued with structural adhesive, and its “waterproof” and “anti-termite” badges come with no test report we could find. Ask for the core material and thickness in writing. ClickBina supplies and installs it: tell us your room, wall size and budget and we will recommend a board and quote.

What a “bamboo charcoal” wall panel is sold as

Bamboo charcoal board is one of the fastest-growing wall finishes in Malaysian showrooms. It comes as large flat sheets, usually about the height of a room, with a printed face: light oak, walnut, grey concrete, white marble, even metallic and mirror finishes. It is sold for whole feature walls, TV walls, bedroom walls and shop interiors, and it is often marketed as a natural, “bamboo” product.

The name is where the confusion starts. This guide explains what the board is actually made of, which seller claims we could and could not find evidence for, how it is installed, and how it compares with the other flat panels you will be quoted for the same wall. For the wider picture, see our guide to wall panel types.

What is actually in the board

Despite the name, 'bamboo charcoal' wall board is mainly plastic: one manufacturer describes it as bamboo charcoal powder and PVC, heated and extruded, with a PVC decorative film on the face. Another seller describes its 'bamboo charcoal' board as wood-plastic composite — the name is not used consistently, so ask what the core actually is.

In other words, the “bamboo” part is a powder mixed into a plastic core, and the wood or stone look is a printed film. That is not a bad thing in itself: a plastic-rich board behaves very differently from MDF or plywood, and for some walls that is exactly what you want. But it means you should judge the board as a plastic panel, not as a timber or bamboo product.

Why the name tells you little

Product names are used loosely in Malaysia: the same fluted panel can be listed under a 'WPC' web address while its specification says polystyrene, and one seller describes fluted cores as 'often high-density Polystyrene or a Wood-Plastic/PVC Composite'. Ask the quotation to state the core material, not the trade name.

Bamboo charcoal board sits in the same naming muddle. The same kind of sheet can be sold as “bamboo charcoal board”, “carbon crystal board”, “WPC wall panel” or simply “wall board”, and two boards with the same name can have different cores. The practical rule is simple: ask for the product code, the core material and the thickness in writing, and compare quotes line by line on those, not on the name.

Moisture and termites: what the sellers claim

Malaysian listings for these boards commonly carry “waterproof” and “anti-termite” badges. We looked for the test reports behind those badges and did not find any, so this guide does not repeat them as facts. Treat both words as seller claims and ask for the test data for the exact board before you rely on them.

What we can say from how walls fail: a board is only as good as the wall behind it. If the wall is damp from seepage, rising damp or a leaking aircon pipe, covering it with any panel hides the problem and gives mould somewhere dark to grow. Fix the source first; our guide to mould behind wall panels explains how to find it. And in a bathroom, a plastic-rich board is not the waterproofing: the wall behind still needs a proper waterproofing layer, and the shower zone should be tiled.

Fire: ask for the report, not the badge

Some sellers add a fire classification to the product description, sometimes from a foreign classification system. We found no test report behind those claims for the boards we checked, so this page states no fire rating for bamboo charcoal board. For a home, the practical point is to know that the core is plastic-rich. For a shop, office, clinic or any common area, ask for the fire test report for the exact product before it is ordered, because the building’s consultant and the fire authority decide what is acceptable there, not the panel seller.

Finishes: wood, stone, metallic and mirror

Because the look is a printed film, the range is wide and cheap to change. Wood-grain films are the most common, followed by stone and marble prints, solid colours, metallic and mirror films. A few points from installing them:

  • Ask for a large sample, not a swatch. Printed grain repeats; on a full wall you can sometimes see the same knot every sheet. Look at two sheets side by side.
  • Mirror and high-gloss films show every bump. They need the flattest wall of all, and they show scratches from cleaning.
  • Matte wood films hide small flaws best and are the easiest to live with on a wall that gets touched.
  • Joints are part of the look. Decide early whether the seams are hidden, butted tight, or finished with a joint strip in a contrasting colour.

How it is installed

A Malaysian supplier's catalogue for 8 mm bamboo-charcoal-type panels specifies a flat wall, a neutral waterproof structural adhesive, temporary fixing at the seams until the adhesive has fully cured, and heat-bending with a heat gun for curves.

Two things follow from that. First, the wall has to be genuinely flat and dry before the first sheet goes up, so the quotation should say what preparation is included: skim coat, levelling, or a batten frame over an uneven wall. Second, removal is not clean. A board bonded with structural adhesive usually takes some of the wall surface with it, so if you rent, or might change the design in a few years, ask about a batten or clip system instead. Our wall panel installation guide compares the fixing methods, and the wall panel removal guide explains what taking panels off involves.

Plan the electrical points before the boards are ordered. Switch and socket boxes need neat cut-outs, and any LED strip or wall light should have its driver somewhere you can reach later, not sealed behind a glued sheet.

Where it works and where it doesn't

  • Living room and TV feature walls: a good fit when you want a whole wall in one wood or stone look without carpentry. See feature wall ideas for the alternatives.
  • Bedrooms: works well behind the bed; plan the bedside switches and sockets first.
  • Shops and offices: fast to install and easy to clean, but the fire test report question comes first.
  • Kitchens: fine on dry walls away from the hob; behind the hob and sink we keep tile or glass.
  • Bathrooms: the board is not the waterproofing, and we tile the shower zone.
  • Outdoors: not the product for it; exterior walls need a cladding system on a sub-frame.

Every material fact on this page was checked against the page or PDF below on 30 Sep 2026. Most are one manufacturer describing its own product, so we quote them as that, not as a property of every panel sold under the same name. Where a standard is named (EN 13501-1, ASTM E84, BS 476) it is named by the manufacturer; it is not a Malaysian approval.

Prices: this page publishes no prices. Panel prices depend on the core material, thickness, wall size, trims and the state of the wall, so we quote after you tell us the room, wall size and budget. The site-visit fee (RM150, waived if you proceed) is ClickBina’s own.

Common Questions

Is bamboo charcoal board made of bamboo?
Mostly not. One manufacturer describes it as bamboo charcoal powder and PVC, heated and extruded, with a PVC decorative film on the face; another seller describes its board as wood-plastic composite. Treat it as a plastic-rich panel and ask what the core actually is.
Is bamboo charcoal wall panel waterproof?
Sellers often say so, but we found no test report behind the claim. The board is plastic-rich, so it copes with humidity better than MDF, but it is not a waterproofing layer. In a bathroom the wall behind still needs waterproofing and the shower zone should be tiled.
Is it anti-termite?
That is a common seller claim, and we could not find a test report for it. If termites are a risk in the house, deal with the colony and entry points first, and ask the seller for test data before relying on the badge.
How is bamboo charcoal board installed?
A Malaysian supplier's catalogue for 8 mm panels specifies a flat wall, the neutral structural adhesive it names, temporary fixing at the seams until the adhesive cures, and a heat gun to bend it for curves. The wall must be flat and dry first.
Can I remove it when my tenancy ends?
Glued sheets usually take some of the wall surface with them, so expect patching and repainting. If you rent, ask for a batten or clip system that can come off with less damage.
Bamboo charcoal board or WPC flat panel: which is better?
Neither is automatically better, and the names overlap: some sellers call bamboo charcoal board WPC. Compare the core material, thickness, face film and fixing system on each quote, and choose on a full-size sample.
How much does a bamboo charcoal feature wall cost?
It depends on the board, the wall size, the trims and how much preparation the wall needs, so this page publishes no prices. Tell us your room, wall size and budget on WhatsApp and we will recommend a board and quote.
