Padded headboard walls and fabric acoustic panels look alike but are different products. Here is how each is built, which fabric to choose, what to ask about fire and how they are hung.

“Fabric wall panel” means two products. An upholstered panel is decorative: padded, often used as a full-width headboard wall. A fabric acoustic panel is typically a rigid acoustic fibreglass core with hardened edges under an acoustically transparent fabric, hung on Z-clips or impaling clips, and built to absorb echo. Choose a fabric you can vacuum, hang panels on clips or cleats if you may move, and for commercial rooms ask for the fire test report for the fabric and the panel. ClickBina supplies and installs both: tell us your room, wall size and budget and we will recommend one and quote.
“Fabric wall panel” covers two products that are bought for different reasons. One is the upholstered decorative panel: padded, often channelled or tufted, used to turn the wall behind a bed into a full-width headboard or to soften a living room. The other is the fabric-wrapped acoustic panel: flat, rigid, built to absorb echo in a home cinema, studio or office. They can look alike on a wall, but they are made differently and should be quoted differently.
This guide explains how each is built, how to choose a fabric for Malaysian humidity and dust, what to ask about fire, and how each is mounted. For the wider range of panels, see our guide to wall panel types.
Fabric-wrapped acoustic panels are typically a rigid acoustic fibreglass core with hardened edges under an acoustically transparent fabric, hung on Z-clips or impaling clips; one US maker recommends vacuuming or light brushing for cleaning.
The core does the acoustic work; the fabric is chosen to let sound through to it. That is why an acoustic panel is covered in an open, breathable fabric rather than vinyl or a tightly woven, coated cloth. Some panels use pressed polyester fibre instead of a fibreglass core:
PET acoustic panels are pressed polyester fibre; one major maker lists its wall panel as 100% PET with a minimum 58% recycled content.
Our acoustic panel guide covers how much panel a room needs, where it goes and how to read an absorption figure. Remember that any acoustic panel treats echo inside the room; it does not stop noise from next door.
We did not find a manufacturer data sheet for the padded decorative panels sold here, so this guide describes what to ask rather than stating how they are built. When you are quoted for an upholstered headboard wall or padded panels, ask for these in writing:
The answers decide how the wall ages, whether one stained panel can be replaced, and whether the wall can come down when you move.
In the Klang Valley the fabric has three enemies: humidity when the aircon is off, dust, and hands. This is our advice from installing both types, not a laboratory ranking:
| Fabric type | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Tightly woven polyester | Headboards and walls that get touched; easy to vacuum | Too dense for an acoustic panel |
| Open acoustic fabric | Acoustic panels: lets sound through to the core | Shows dust on dark colours |
| Velvet and plush | Rich look behind a bed | Marks from hands; ask how it is cleaned |
| Linen-look weaves | Soft, natural look | Ask the seller for colour and cleaning data in sunny rooms |
| Leather-look vinyl | Wipeable headboards | Reflects sound, so no acoustic effect |
Whatever you choose, keep a spare length of the same fabric batch; colours vary between batches, and a stained panel is far easier to recover when you already have the cloth.
Fabric and padding burn, so this question matters more for these panels than for most. A few points:
| Method | Used for | Taking it down later |
|---|---|---|
| Z-clips or cleats | Acoustic panels and removable headboard panels | Lift off; fill a few screw holes |
| Impaling clips | Acoustic panels | Pull off; small fixings to remove |
| Screwed through a frame | Built-in headboard walls | Unscrew; patch and repaint |
| Adhesive | Light panels on flat walls | Usually damages the wall surface |
For rented homes, or anywhere you might change the design, choose clips or cleats. Plan the bedside switches, sockets and reading lights before the panels are made, so the cut-outs line up.

Every material fact on this page was checked against the page or PDF below on 30 Sep 2026. Most are one manufacturer describing its own product, so we quote them as that, not as a property of every panel sold under the same name. Where a standard is named (EN 13501-1, ASTM E84, BS 476) it is named by the manufacturer; it is not a Malaysian approval.
Prices: this page publishes no prices. Panel prices depend on the core material, thickness, wall size, trims and the state of the wall, so we quote after you tell us the room, wall size and budget. The site-visit fee (RM150, waived if you proceed) is ClickBina’s own.
