The slat-on-felt wall is everywhere. Here is how it is built, which part absorbs sound, why the mounting changes everything, and when a plain fluted wall would do the same job.

An acoustic slat panel is MDF slats, faced with veneer or laminate, on an acoustic felt backing. It reduces echo inside a room only through its felt and the way it is mounted: the same panel usually absorbs more on battens with an air gap than fixed flat to the wall, and a sealed decorative slat board is a finish, not an acoustic panel. It does not stop noise from next door. Ask for any absorption figure together with the mounting it was tested with, and for a fire test report on commercial jobs. ClickBina supplies and installs slat walls: tell us your room, wall size and budget and we will recommend a panel and quote.
The wood-slat wall with thin black gaps between the slats is everywhere on Malaysian social media: behind a home-office desk, around a TV, in a podcast corner, along a café wall. Most of those panels are sold as “acoustic”, and that word does real work in the price. This guide explains how the panel is built, which part of it actually absorbs sound, why the mounting changes the result, and how to tell whether you need one or whether a plain fluted wall would do the same job for your room.
Slat-style acoustic panels are MDF slats faced with real wood veneer (or laminate) mounted on an acoustic felt backing, according to one of the best-known makers.
So an acoustic slat panel is two things stacked together: a decorative face of slats, and a layer of felt behind and between them. Where the slats sit is fixed; what matters for sound is the felt, the gaps that let sound reach it, and what is behind the panel. For the wider range of panels, see our guide to wall panel types.
Our acoustic panel guide makes a point that applies directly here: a sealed decorative slat board is a finish, not an acoustic panel. A fluted MDF panel or a slatted board glued flat to a wall looks similar, but its hard face reflects sound much like the wall it covers. A slat panel on felt is acoustic only through its felt and the way it is mounted.
| Decorative fluted or slat board | Slat panel on acoustic felt | |
|---|---|---|
| Construction | Solid or machined board, sealed face | Veneered or laminated MDF slats on a felt backing |
| What the sound meets | A hard surface | Hard slats plus felt in the gaps |
| Effect on echo | Little; it is a finish | Depends on the felt, the open area and the mounting |
| Main reason to buy | Looks | Looks plus some echo control |

PET acoustic panels are pressed polyester fibre; one major maker lists its wall panel as 100% PET with a minimum 58% recycled content.
PET felt is used because it is light, easy to cut and does not need a fabric cover. On a slat panel it does two jobs: it gives the dark shadow line between the slats, and it is the layer that absorbs some of the sound that passes through the gaps. The thickness and density of the felt, and how much of it is exposed, vary from product to product, which is one reason two panels that look identical can perform differently.
A panel absorbs sound best when there is space behind it. The same panel fixed flat against a concrete wall and the same panel on battens with an air gap behind it are, acoustically, two different products. That is why an absorption figure means little on its own: you need to know how the tested sample was mounted.
| Mounting | What it looks like | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Screwed or glued flat to the wall | Thinnest build-up, cleanest look | The least absorption the product can give |
| On battens with an air gap | Panel stands off the wall | Usually more absorption, especially lower down the range |
| On battens with insulation in the gap | As above, cavity filled | Usually the most; ask for a test in this set-up |
When a seller quotes a sound absorption figure or rating, ask two questions: which standard it was measured to, and how the panel was mounted in the test. If the answer is a cavity with insulation and you plan to screw the panel flat to the wall, do not expect the same result.
An acoustic panel of any kind treats echo and reverberation inside one room. It does not stop sound travelling through the wall to the neighbour, from the corridor or from the road; that needs mass, airtightness and decoupling, which our soundproofing walls guide covers. If the problem is that your own room sounds harsh on video calls or music bounces around a hard living room, slat panels can help. If the problem is the neighbour, they are the wrong purchase.
We did not find a published fire classification for the felt-backed slat panels we looked at, so this page states none. Two things are worth knowing:
Felt collects dust, and the gaps between slats collect it too. In an air-conditioned room that is a light vacuum every few months. In a room that stays humid, or on a wall that is damp from seepage or an aircon pipe, do not put any panel up until the wall is dry; a panel over a damp wall hides the problem. MDF slats swell if they get wet, so keep these panels away from splash zones, bathrooms and wet kitchens.
ClickBina supplies and installs wall panels and feature walls as part of our renovation work in KL and Selangor — WPC, PS, PVC, SPC, painted, laminated or veneered MDF, solid timber slat, UV marble sheet, acoustic slat and fabric panels. We recommend the panel by your budget and how the room is used, and the quotation names the core material, thickness, fixing method and trims. For acoustic slat walls we tell you plainly when a plain fluted panel would give the same result for your room, and put the mounting method on the quotation.
Tell us your room, wall size and budget on WhatsApp and we’ll recommend the right panel and quote. A site visit is RM150, waived if you proceed. Our price is flat, with no hidden charges; we are SSM-registered and reply within the hour. If the wall is part of a bigger job, we handle whole-house refurbishment and coordinate the trades.
Every material fact on this page was checked against the page or PDF below on 30 Sep 2026. Most are one manufacturer describing its own product, so we quote them as that, not as a property of every panel sold under the same name. Where a standard is named (EN 13501-1, ASTM E84, BS 476) it is named by the manufacturer; it is not a Malaysian approval.
Prices: this page publishes no prices. Panel prices depend on the core material, thickness, wall size, trims and the state of the wall, so we quote after you tell us the room, wall size and budget. The site-visit fee (RM150, waived if you proceed) is ClickBina’s own.
