An acoustic panel absorbs sound that is bouncing around inside one room. It reduces echo, flutter and reverberation, so speech and music become clearer and the room stops feeling harsh. What it does not do is stop sound travelling between rooms — that is a question of mass, airtightness and decoupling, and a panel adds none of those. What an acoustic panel actually is

An acoustic panel is a porous or perforated element fixed to a wall or ceiling whose job is to let sound energy enter it and convert it to a tiny amount of heat instead of reflecting it back into the room. That is the whole mechanism. A hard, flat, sealed surface — plastered masonry, glass, tile, a laminated board — reflects almost everything that hits it. A panel that is open, fibrous or slotted with a cavity behind it does not.

This matters because it explains why panels come in the shapes they do. Fabric-wrapped panels are a fibrous core with an acoustically transparent cloth over the face. Perforated and slotted panels work because the holes or grooves let sound through to an absorbent layer and a cavity behind. Polyester felt panels are a fibre mat pressed into a board. In every case the working part is what is behind the face, which is why the two questions that decide performance are what is inside the panel and how much air sits between the panel and the structure. What a panel does — and what it does not

This is the section to read before you spend anything, because more money is wasted on acoustic panels through this one misunderstanding than through every specification error combined.

Absorption is what a panel does. Inside a single room, it shortens the tail of every sound. Speech stops smearing into the next word, a meeting room stops feeling like a corridor, a home office stops sounding cavernous on a video call, and music gains definition. You will hear the difference immediately and so will anyone on the other end of the call.

Isolation is what a panel does not do. Stopping sound from crossing from one room to another — the neighbour’s television, the corridor, the traffic, the unit upstairs — depends on mass, on airtightness, and on decoupling one structure from another. A panel bonded to the face of a wall adds a negligible amount of mass, seals nothing, and decouples nothing. Hanging panels to fix a neighbour problem is the most common disappointment in this category, and no amount of coverage changes the outcome.

Almost everything sold in the Klang Valley falls into one of these families. They are not interchangeable, and the right choice is usually decided by the room’s use and its cleaning regime as much as by how it looks.

Two practical notes for Malaysian conditions. Fibrous and felt products live happily in an air-conditioned room and badly in a damp or intermittently cooled one, so a panelled room that is shut up unconditioned for weeks needs the humidity thought about. And anything fixed to a wall in a commercial or common area will be asked about on fire performance, so ask for the product’s fire classification documentation at quotation stage rather than after installation.

Rooms where panels earn their place

Panels pay for themselves where a room is used for talking or listening and where the surfaces are hard. In Klang Valley buildings that list is predictable.

Meeting rooms and boardrooms. Glass on one or two sides, a hard floor, a hard ceiling and a big table is the standard recipe for a room where the far end of a video call cannot follow the conversation. Open-plan offices, cafes and restaurants. Here the goal is not silence but lowering the level at which everyone has to talk. Ceiling absorption usually does more than wall absorption, because the ceiling is the largest uninterrupted hard surface in the room.

Media rooms, music rooms and studios. The most demanding case, and the one where placement matters more than quantity. It is also the case most likely to need genuine isolation work as well as absorption — and those are two separate scopes and two separate budgets.

How much panel, and where it goes

Coverage and placement are where a competent installation separates from a decorative one. Panels scattered evenly across one wall because it looked balanced on the drawing will underperform panels placed deliberately at the points where sound is reflecting.

The reliable principle is to treat the surfaces that face each other. Sound bouncing between two parallel hard surfaces — two opposite walls, or a hard floor and a hard ceiling — produces the flutter that makes a room sound harsh. Break one of each parallel pair and the improvement is immediate. In a talking room, that normally means the wall opposite the main speaking position and the ceiling above the table. In a listening room, it means the points on each side wall where sound from the speakers reflects towards the seat.

Three further placement points. First, corners and the wall-to-ceiling junction do disproportionate work, because low-frequency energy builds up there. Second, the furniture is part of the acoustic design: a carpet, heavy curtains, an upholstered sofa and a full bookshelf all absorb, so a soft room needs far less panel than an empty one. Third, more is not automatically better — over-treating a small room makes it sound dead and airless, which people dislike in a different way. Ask your supplier what coverage their proposal assumes and why, and have the layout drawn before anything is cut.

How panels are mounted

The mounting method decides three things at once: how well the panel performs, whether it will still be on the wall in five years, and what the wall looks like if you ever take it down. Agree it before you order.

The substrate is the detail that catches people out. A fixing into solid masonry, into a plasterboard-lined stud wall, into an autoclaved block or into a concrete soffit are four different fixings, and using a general-purpose plug in all four is how panels end up on the floor. Reading the specification honestly

Acoustic products are sold with numbers, and the numbers are only meaningful if you know what was measured. This guide deliberately prints no absorption rating of its own, because a figure quoted without its test basis is worse than no figure. Instead, here is what to ask the supplier for in writing.

Ask for the tested absorption figure and the standard it was measured to, not a marketing adjective. A single headline number is a summary of a curve, so also ask to see the absorption per frequency band if the room matters to you — a product that performs well on speech may do very little lower down, which is exactly where a music room or a room next to a plant deck needs help.

Ask what mounting the test used. The same panel tested tight against a rigid surface and tested with an air cavity behind it produces materially different results, and the better number is usually the one with the cavity. If the quotation proposes direct adhesive fixing but quotes a figure tested with a cavity, those two facts do not belong in the same document.

Ask for the fire classification and its documentation, especially for anything in a commercial space, a common area or an escape route. Ask what the face material is, how it cleans, and whether it is colour-fast where sunlight reaches it. And ask for the warranty terms separately for the panel and for the installation, because they are usually different parties.

Condos, offices and management approval

Panels look like furniture and are treated like building work, so the permission question is worth settling first. That review takes time, so raise it early rather than on the installation date.

Mistakes that waste the budget

Buying panels to fix a neighbour, a corridor or a traffic noise problem. This one costs the whole budget for no measurable change, because transmission between spaces is a construction question and a panel answers a different one. Name the problem before you name the product.

Ignoring the doors, windows and the gaps around them. A room can be beautifully treated and still leak sound both ways through a single unsealed gap. Sealing and upgrading the openings usually buys more than adding absorbent surface area ever will.

Adhesive-fixing to an uneven or damp wall. Every high spot shows, panels lift at the edges, and a concealed damp problem quietly gets worse behind them. Rectify the wall first, then batten-fix with a cavity.

Quoting a laboratory absorption figure while installing a different way. A figure tested with an air cavity does not describe a panel bonded flat to a wall. Require the tested figure and the mounting it was tested with, in the same document.

Spreading panels evenly across a wall for visual balance. Half the quantity placed deliberately at the reflecting surfaces outperforms a symmetrical grid. Work from a marked-up drawing, not from what looks tidy.

Over-treating a small room. A carpeted room with curtains and a sofa already absorbs a great deal, and piling panels on top of that produces a dead, airless space people avoid using. Count the soft furnishings as part of the treatment.

Skipping the fire classification in a commercial space or a common area. The certificate is free to ask for at quotation stage and expensive to discover you do not have after a building inspection.

Common Questions

Will acoustic panels stop my neighbour’s noise?
No. Panels absorb sound reflecting inside your own room; they do not stop sound crossing between rooms. Blocking transmission depends on mass, airtightness and decoupling, and a panel adds none of those.
