An “ACP awning” is a flat or low-pitched canopy whose frame is wrapped in aluminium composite panel (ACP) on the fascia and underside, with a proper roof covering on top. ACP itself is a cladding panel, not a roofing product, so the part that keeps the rain out should be a metal sheet, an insulated panel or another real roof cover, laid to a fall. That is why no honest contractor has a single “ACP awning per metre” rate: ClickBina prices the cover, frame and ACP finish as separate lines. For reference, the awning guide puts a corrugated metal awning at RM250 – RM500 per metre run and a fixed aluminium louvre roof at RM800 – RM1,500 (indicative 2026, Klang Valley).

What an ACP or aluminium awning actually is

In Malaysia “awning ACP” usually describes the clean, box-shaped canopy over a main door, a side wall or a car porch: a slim frame with crisp edges, a flat-looking top and a smooth panelled underside, sometimes with a downlight. It reads as one solid block, which is the look people want. Underneath that finish there are three separate parts, and each one decides how long the awning lasts:

PartWhat it isWhat goes wrong if it is skimped
FrameAluminium or galvanised steel hollow sections, fixed to the wall and sometimes to postsSagging, rust at welds, anchors pulling out of weak walls
Top coverA real roof covering: profiled metal sheet, an insulated sandwich panel, or similarPonding and leaks if it is flat, joint-sealed or not falling to a gutter
ACP finishAluminium composite panel on the fascia band and soffit (underside)Dents, oil-canning, sealant joints failing, water trapped behind the band

Our ACP cladding guide explains why: ACP is a sandwich of two thin aluminium skins and a core, designed as a rain screen on walls and fascias. It is not designed to be walked on, to span as a roof deck, or to shed water down a slope on lapped joints.

What should go on top

The top cover is the part you cannot see from the street and the part that matters most. Ask your installer to name it in writing:

  • Profiled metal sheet (metal deck or longspan): the common, economical choice, laid to the maker's minimum fall and hidden behind the ACP fascia.
  • Insulated sandwich panel: quieter in rain and cooler underneath, at a higher cost.
  • Polycarbonate: if you want daylight through the middle with a solid ACP edge.
  • An ACP sheet sealed with silicone as the roof: the version to refuse. The first failed sealant bead becomes a leak, and a flat top ponds.

Whatever the cover, it needs a slight fall to a gutter hidden behind the fascia, and that gutter needs an outlet and a downpipe. A canopy that looks dead flat from the street should still fall on top.

Our powder-coated aluminium guide covers how the finish on aluminium sections holds up in Malaysian sun and rain.

Pros and cons of an ACP canopy

ProsCons
Clean, modern, box-like look that matches ACP or aluminium on the facadePriced per job; no simple per-metre rate to compare
Solid shade and rain cover, no glareBlocks daylight unless the top includes a clear section
Hides the gutter, wiring for a downlight and the frameSealant joints on the ACP need inspecting and renewing over time
Wide colour range, consistent finishA flat top that does not fall is a leak waiting to happen
Light enough for no-post canopies over doorsThin-skinned panels dent from ladders and knocks

Where ACP awnings leak

  1. The wall joint. The top edge meets the wall and every drop of rain passes it. It needs a flashing or wall channel, not a smear of sealant; our awning wall-joint guide covers the fix.
  2. A flat top. Water sits, finds a joint and drips through the soffit.
  3. The hidden gutter. Leaves block it and nobody can see it; water overflows behind the fascia.
  4. Panel joints. Sealed ACP joints age in the sun; once they open, water gets behind the band.
  5. Downlight holes. A light fitted through the soffit under a leaking top fills with water first.

How an ACP awning is priced

ClickBina does not publish a per-metre ACP awning rate, because the cover, frame, ACP area, posts and access vary so much. These published figures are reference points for the parts (indicative 2026, Klang Valley):

Read the RM2,500 line for what it is: one fascia band and gutter on one car porch in the car porch guide's example, not a figure to scale up. A canopy over a main door is a small job; a full car porch canopy with posts, a hidden gutter and a large ACP soffit is a much larger one.

What the quotation should list

  1. Frame material and section size: aluminium or galvanised steel, and the finish.
  2. The top cover by name, its fall, and where the water goes (gutter, outlet, downpipe).
  3. The ACP panel: maker and product, core type, panel thickness and colour reference.
  4. Wall fixings and anchors, and the flashing at the wall.
  5. Posts and footings, if any.
  6. Any downlight, and who provides the power point.
  7. Access for upper-floor work and removal of any old awning.

The ACP cladding guide makes the same point about the panel: if the core and the product are not named, you cannot compare two quotes. For a small house canopy you do not need a facade-grade specification, but you do need to know what you are buying.

Approvals and good practice

  • Condos and strata: management approval first; many buildings control anything fixed to the facade.
  • Landed: a small canopy within your lot is usually minor work; anything over the boundary or a walkway needs the council.
  • Rain noise: a metal top under ACP drums in a storm; an insulated panel or foil reduces it, as our noisy awning guide explains.
  • Upper floors: elevated working platforms add RM500–RM1,500 to labour on the awning guide's figures.

Upkeep

Wash the ACP face with water and a mild cleaner, never abrasives or strong solvents that damage the coating. Clear the hidden gutter before the monsoon, and inspect the sealant joints and the wall flashing once a year. Renew sealant before it splits, not after the soffit stains.

Common Questions

How much is an ACP awning in Malaysia?
There is no honest single rate, because ACP is the finish, not the roof. Price the frame, the roof cover and the ACP fascia separately. For reference, ClickBina's awning guide puts a metal awning at RM250–RM500 and a fixed aluminium louvre at RM800–RM1,500 per metre run (indicative 2026, Klang Valley).
Can ACP be used as an awning roof?
Not as the waterproof cover. ACP is a cladding panel; the top should be a metal sheet, insulated panel or other roof cover laid to a fall, with ACP on the fascia and soffit.
Is an aluminium awning better than steel?
Aluminium is lighter and does not rust, which suits no-post canopies on weaker walls. Steel is stronger and cheaper for the same size, which suits wider spans, but it must be galvanised and painted.
Why does my ACP awning leak?
Usually at the wall joint, a flat top that ponds, a blocked hidden gutter, or sealed panel joints that have aged. Check those before replacing panels.
Is an ACP awning noisy in rain?
A bare metal top under the ACP can drum in heavy rain. An insulated sandwich panel or foil under the sheet reduces the noise.
Do I need approval for an ACP canopy?
Condos need management approval. On landed homes a small canopy within your lot is usually minor work, but anything over the boundary or a walkway needs the council.
How do I clean an ACP awning?
Wash with water and a mild cleaner; avoid abrasives and strong solvents. Clear the hidden gutter and check the sealant joints yearly.
