• Buying by price without checking wear layer thickness. Two products at the same price can have wear layers of 0.2 mm vs 0.5 mm; the difference in lifespan is enormous.
• Laying over an uneven subfloor without levelling first. Planks over high spots will creak, and click joints will separate under normal foot traffic within months.
• Not acclimatising the planks before installation. SPC and LVT should sit in the installation room for 24–48 hours to equilibrate to the ambient temperature and humidity.
• Insufficient expansion gap at walls. Vinyl still expands with temperature changes. Leave a 6–10 mm gap at all fixed edges and cover with skirting or quarter-round trim.
