Small canopies over windows, grilles and doors: which type, how big, how they fix to the wall, and when a leaking window needs more than a canopy.
📍 We serve KL, Selangor & Putrajaya.

A window or door awning is a short canopy fixed to the wall over one opening, to keep rain from splashing in when the window is open, shade the glass from the afternoon sun, and keep a doorstep dry. Most are polycarbonate or a flat ACP or metal canopy on wall brackets with no posts; glass and retractable fabric are the other options. Awnings are priced per metre run of wall, so a canopy over a single window is a small job: ClickBina's awning guide puts polycarbonate at RM350 – RM700 per metre run installed and tempered glass at RM900 – RM2,000 (indicative 2026, Klang Valley). A canopy reduces rain on a window, but it does not fix a window that already leaks.
In the Klang Valley, afternoon storms drive rain sideways into open windows, soak window sills and frames, and leave doorsteps slippery. A small canopy over the opening deals with the everyday version of that problem, and shades the glass from the hottest sun of the day. It is the most common “small awning” job on terraces and semi-Ds, and it is a different job from roofing a whole yard or porch.
| Problem | Does a canopy help? | What else to check |
|---|---|---|
| Rain splashes in when the window is open | Yes, this is the main reason to fit one | Projection and side overhang (see sizing below) |
| Afternoon sun heats a west-facing room | Yes, especially an opaque or tinted canopy | Tinted film or blinds as well |
| Doorstep and door frame always wet | Yes | A fall away from the door and a drain in front |
| Window leaks in heavy storms even when shut | Partly: it cuts the rain reaching the window | The sealant, sill flashing and weep holes are usually the real cause |
| Rain enters through an open window grille | Yes, a canopy over the grille is common | The grille fixings and wall joint |
ClickBina's window leak repair guide explains that the glass is almost never the problem: water gets in through perimeter sealant, sill flashing, blocked weep holes in the frame and cracks in the wall above, and squall winds push rain through gaps that calm rain never enters. A canopy reduces the water hitting the window, which helps, but if the window leaks with the window shut, fix the window first. Otherwise the leak simply waits for a storm that blows in under the canopy.
| Type | Look and feel | Suits | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Polycarbonate on steel or aluminium brackets | Light, clear or tinted; the most common | Windows and side doors on terraces and semi-Ds | Tinted sheet if the aim is shade; UV face up |
| Flat ACP or metal canopy | Solid, box-like, modern | Main doors and modern facades | A slight fall and a sealed wall joint, or it ponds |
| Metal deck or zinc hood | Plain, opaque, cheapest | Service yards, kitchen doors, back windows | Rain noise on a bedroom window |
| Glass canopy on stainless fittings | Crisp and bright, keeps the facade clear | Main doors and entrances | Weight on the wall; safety glass overhead |
| Drop-arm fabric awning | Soft, retracts when not needed | Shading a single window from the afternoon sun | Roll it in for storms; fabric is replaced over time |
Our awning design gallery shows a no-post bronze polycarbonate window canopy, a flat charcoal canopy over a main door and a glass canopy over a side door, if you want to see the looks side by side.
Small awnings fail more often from poor proportions than poor materials. Work through these with your installer:
Most window and door canopies have no posts, so the wall carries everything. The awning guide notes that drilling into concrete is straightforward and strong, while brick walls or tiled facades need the right plugs and heavier anchor plates. The joint where the canopy meets the wall is the highest point of the awning and the place most awnings leak; ask for a proper flashing or wall channel rather than only a bead of sealant. Our awning wall-joint guide explains why a sealant-only joint keeps failing.
These are ClickBina's published figures (indicative 2026, Klang Valley). Awnings are priced per metre run of wall, so a single window canopy is a short run; several windows on the same wall are often quoted together.

💬 WhatsApp for a quoteUpstairs windows usually cost more to fit than the canopy itself because of access, which is why it pays to do every upstairs window on one elevation in a single visit.
Upper-floor windows on terraces take the most weather and are the hardest to reach. Fitting a canopy there means working at height from a platform or scaffold, so plan it together with any other facade work, such as resealing windows or painting, to share the access. Where the window has an outward-opening grille or a fixed grille projecting from the wall, the canopy has to clear it and be fixed into sound wall above it.
