Bathroom Door Types
Bi-fold, WPC, PVC or ABS?

Swollen timber door or a bi-fold that keeps jumping its track? Here is how the bathroom door options compare, what each really does with water, and what they cost.

Half-folded aluminium bi-fold bathroom door in a condo corridor

For a bathroom, choose a door made for wet areas: an aluminium bi-fold, a WPC or fibreglass door, or a PVC door, not timber or hollow-core. A bi-fold saves space but has rollers and pivots that wear; WPC recipes vary by brand, so check the maker’s own product sheet. Indicative Klang Valley prices for 2026: a new bi-fold RM250 – RM800 installed, a WPC or fibreglass door RM400 – RM900. WhatsApp ClickBina your job details for a quote; we reply within the hour.

Why bathroom doors are the first doors to fail

A bathroom door lives in steam, splashes and a floor that is washed down every day. Two kinds of door dominate Malaysian homes, and each fails in its own way. The aluminium bi-fold is the default bathroom door in hundreds of thousands of condo units, and its moving parts, the nylon rollers, pivot pins and plastic guides, wear out years before the door itself. Timber bathroom doors fail differently: humidity swells the leaf until it sticks, and standing splash water rots the bottom rail.

Many of those problems are repairs, not replacements, and the door repair guide covers them. This page is for the point where the door is finished, or where you are renovating the bathroom and choosing a new door type anyway.

Bathroom door options at a glance

These are the door types you will be offered for a bathroom in Malaysia. The material decides how it copes with water; the opening decides how much space it needs:

Aluminium bi-fold doors

The bi-fold folds in the middle and runs on a track at the head, so it needs little space to open, which is why developers fit it in compact condo bathrooms. The aluminium frame itself does not rot, so the door usually outlives its moving parts.

A bi-fold that drags, jumps its track or hangs off its top rail can often be put right with new rollers and pivots, which are standard parts. Replacement makes sense when the frame is bent or the track has corroded. The door repair guide prices a new bi-fold at RM250 – RM800 supplied and installed, with branded units from around RM480. When comparing quotes, ask for the aluminium profile and the brand of the roller set in writing, because those decide how long the next one lasts.

WPC doors: what the label means

WPC stands for wood-plastic composite. One manufacturer, Unifloor, lists its WPC as plastic plus a wood fibre component and additives, and the recipe varies from brand to brand. The site’s doors and windows guide groups WPC with fibreglass as the door for bathrooms, utility rooms and wet areas, describing it as water-resistant, and gives it a lifespan of 20–30 years with nothing more than wiping clean.

It helps to read seller claims carefully. Because WPC contains wood fibre and every brand uses its own recipe, a claim such as “never swells” describes one product, not WPC in general. Ask the supplier for the manufacturer’s own product sheet, what the core is, and how the edges and any cut-outs for the lock are sealed, and treat any claim that is not on that sheet as marketing.

PVC and ABS doors

Rigid PVC is a construction plastic used for pipes, doors and windows. PVC bathroom doors are made from rigid PVC panels or profiles, as swing doors or as folding doors. Because the plastic itself does not rot, they are a common low-cost option for wet rooms. The differences between products are in how stiff the leaf feels, how the panels are joined, and how solid the frame and hinges are.

ABS doors are sold with an ABS plastic facing, and the core behind that facing varies by maker. That is the question to ask: what is inside, and are the edges and the lock cut-out sealed so that water cannot reach the core? A door is only as water-tolerant as its weakest edge.

Timber and hollow-core doors in a bathroom

The doors guide is blunt about wet areas: WPC or fibreglass door only, never solid timber or hollow-core in wet zones. A timber door that is sticking can be planed and repainted, which buys years if it is caught early, but a spongy bottom rail means the leaf is done.

If you like the look of timber, keep it for a powder room with no shower, or choose a WPC or PVC door with a timber-look finish for the main bathroom.

Swing, bi-fold or sliding: choosing the opening

  • Swing door: the simplest hardware and the easiest to seal round the frame, but it needs clear floor space to open, inward or outward.
  • Bi-fold: needs about half the swing space, which is why it suits small condo bathrooms. The trade-off is moving parts that need servicing.
  • Sliding door: needs wall space beside the opening instead of floor space. Check that the wall is free of switches, pipes and towel rails before choosing it.

Think about who uses the bathroom. An outward-opening or folding door is easier to open if someone falls against it inside, which is worth considering for an elderly parent’s bathroom.

Locks, ventilation and the gap under the door

Two small details make a bathroom door safer and the room healthier. First, the lock: the door repair guide recommends privacy sets with an emergency external release, a coin-slot release for the day a child locks themselves in. The locksmith guide covers lock types.

Second, air. A bathroom with an exhaust fan needs replacement air, which usually means a gap under the door, so do not order a new door that seals tight to the floor. The exhaust fan guide explains why a fan with no incoming air leaves condensation and mould in place.

When the door is not the real problem

A bathroom door that keeps rotting, or a frame that stays damp, is a warning. If the floor outside the bathroom is damp too, the real problem may be the floor’s waterproofing, not the door. Replacing the door will not fix water that is tracking under the threshold or through the wall.

Check this before buying a door: see bathroom waterproofing. If the bathroom is being redone anyway, fit the new door after the waterproofing and tiling are finished, and budget for it in the bathroom renovation cost rather than as an afterthought.

Common Questions

How much does a new bathroom door cost in Malaysia?
Indicative Klang Valley ranges for 2026: RM250 – RM800 for a new aluminium bi-fold supplied and installed, with branded units from around RM480, and RM400 – RM900 for a WPC or fibreglass door. A bi-fold repair is RM80 – RM250.
Is a WPC bathroom door completely water-proof?
Do not take that claim on trust. WPC contains wood fibre and recipes vary by brand, so ask the supplier for the manufacturer’s own product sheet, what the core is and how the edges are sealed.
Should I repair or replace my bathroom bi-fold door?
Repair first if it drags or jumps its track: rollers and pivots are standard parts. Replace it when the frame is bent or the track has corroded.
Can I use a timber door for the bathroom?
Not for a bathroom with a shower. Humidity swells timber until it sticks, and splash water rots the bottom rail. Keep timber for a powder room, or choose a timber-look WPC or PVC door.
What is the difference between a PVC and an ABS door?
A PVC door is made from rigid PVC panels or profiles. An ABS door has an ABS plastic facing over a core that varies by maker, so ask what the core is and how its edges are sealed.
Why does my bathroom door keep rotting?
Often because water is coming from the floor, not just splashes. If the floor outside the bathroom is damp too, check the bathroom waterproofing before replacing the door again.
