A punched, warped or flimsy bedroom door? Here is how the door types compare and what a replacement involves.

For most bedrooms the choice is between a hollow-core door (light and cheapest, but it dents, punctures and lets sound through), a solid-core door (heavier, quieter and tougher, but it needs sound hinges and a frame that can carry it), and a finish such as laminate or an ABS or WPC skin that is chosen for looks and moisture resistance rather than strength. Ask what is inside the door, not only what is on the surface. On our guides a hollow-core bedroom door replacement is RM250–RM600 supplied and installed (indicative 2026, Klang Valley); heavier doors are quoted per door.
Many door problems are repairs. A door that sags, rubs or will not latch usually needs its hinge screws re-plugged and the leaf re-hung; a knob that spins needs a new lockset. Replacement makes sense when the leaf itself has failed: a punched or split skin on a hollow-core door, a skin that has lifted away from the core, a leaf that has warped so it no longer sits flat in the frame, or damage from water or termites.
Our door repair guide sets out the repair-or-replace test in more detail. If the door is only tired, a new finish may be enough; the timber door refinishing guide covers sanding, staining and repainting a sound leaf.
| Door type | What it is | Strengths | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hollow-core | Two thin skins over a paper honeycomb or strip core, with a timber edge frame | Light, cheap, easy to hang | Dents and punctures, poor sound blocking, little wood to trim |
| Solid-core | Skins over a solid core, usually particleboard or timber strips | Quieter, stiffer, feels solid | Much heavier: hinges, screws and frame must carry it |
| Solid timber | Leaf made from solid wood | Traditional look, can be refinished | Moves with humidity, costly, termites if untreated |
| Laminated | A laminate or decorative skin on a hollow or solid core | Hard-wearing, easy-clean face | The core decides strength; edges can lift if wet |
| ABS | A moulded ABS plastic skin over an inner frame and core | Resists moisture, never needs painting | Recipes and cores vary by brand; ask for the product sheet |
| WPC | Wood-plastic composite leaf or skin | Popular for wet areas | Mostly sold for bathrooms; check the core and edge seal |
The labels on a quotation often mix up the core and the skin. "Laminated door" describes the face; the same laminate can sit on a hollow or a solid core. Always ask two questions: what is the core, and what is the skin?

Most Malaysian condos and terrace houses are handed over with hollow-core bedroom doors. They are light, cheap and easy to fit, which is why developers and landlords use them. Their weakness is the thin skin: a knock from a chair, a door handle or a kick goes straight through, and a punctured skin is hard to patch invisibly. They also block very little sound.
For a rental unit or a room that sees little use, a new hollow-core door is often the sensible choice. A small puncture can take a cosmetic patch, but a bigger hole is often cheaper to solve with a new door.
A solid-core door looks the same from the outside but has a dense core. It is the upgrade most people are really asking for when they want a bedroom door that feels solid, blocks more noise from the living room or stands up to children. The trade-off is weight: the heavier leaf needs good hinges, often a third hinge, and screws that bite into sound timber. Our hinges and stoppers guide explains why a heavier leaf may need new hinges before it arrives.
A solid core alone does not make a room soundproof. Gaps round the edges and under the door leak sound, so seals matter as much as the leaf; the soundproofing guide explains how doors fit into the wider job.
Laminated doors carry a hard decorative face that wipes clean and resists scuffs, which suits family homes and rentals. ABS doors use a moulded plastic skin and are marketed for moisture and termite resistance; WPC doors are mostly sold for bathrooms. In a dry bedroom these skins are a choice of look and upkeep rather than a necessity. Whatever the marketing says, ask the supplier for the maker's product sheet and what the core is made of. Our bathroom door types guide covers ABS and WPC in wet areas, where they earn their keep.
A gap under a bedroom door is normal, and in some homes it matters. Where a room is cooled by a fan-coil unit that draws air back through the door undercut, sealing the bottom closes the return-air path and the room can become stuffy. Where a room has its own wall-mounted split unit, a seal at the bottom helps keep the cool air in. Our door bottom seals guide explains which seal suits which room.
Internal door work in a condo is generally treated as a minor job, but check the house rules on working hours and debris before work starts.
These are indicative Klang Valley ranges for 2026 from the ClickBina guides named in the sources section. A solid-core, laminated or ABS bedroom door is quoted per door, because the price depends on the core, the finish, the size and whether the frame needs work.
