Floor trap types in Malaysia differ in three parts: the body (usually PVC or another plastic cast into the slab), the seal that stops smells (a water seal, a mechanical flap or float, or a rubber insert), and the grating on top (plated metal, stainless steel or plastic). A PVC floor trap with a stainless grating is the everyday choice; top access traps let you lift out the trap insert from above to clear it; anti-odour and anti-cockroach inserts help rarely used drains; tile insert gratings hide the drain in the floor pattern. Changing only the cover is a small job (ClickBina's guides list a basic plumbing call-out or minor repair at RM80 – RM250); changing the body means hacking, re-waterproofing and retiling around it.

What a floor trap is made of

A floor trap looks like a grating in the tiles, but it is a small assembly. Knowing the parts makes every type easier to compare, because most products differ in only one of them.

  • The body. The part cast into the floor slab and connected to the waste pipe. It is fixed for the life of the floor; changing it means hacking.
  • The seal. What stops sewer smell and insects coming up. Traditionally a pocket of water that stays in the bend; newer designs add a flap, a float, a spring valve or a rubber seal.
  • The collar. The ring that sits in the tile level and holds the grating. Some collars can be rotated or raised to line up with the tiles.
  • The grating. The visible cover. It sets the look, how fast water enters and how easily hair and insects get through.

Wikipedia's plumbing trap entry explains the principle: the trap keeps some water after each use, and that water forms an air seal that stops sewer gas passing back into the building. Every anti-smell feature you will see on a floor trap box is a way of keeping that seal, or replacing it when it dries out.

Most of the choice is about the grating and the seal. The body is decided once, when the floor is built or rebuilt, so it is worth getting right during a bathroom renovation.

PVC floor traps: the standard body

Most Malaysian homes have a PVC or other plastic floor trap body set into the slab under the tiles. Plastic does not rust, is light and is easy to join to the PVC waste pipe below. Wikipedia's floor drain entry notes that floor drains have gratings made of metal or plastic, and the body under a Malaysian bathroom grating is usually plastic for the same reasons.

A cheap PVC trap is not a bad trap. What fails first is usually the grating on top, or the joint between the body and the waterproofing membrane. If the body is sound, a new grating or insert can sit in it; the floor trap replacement guide explains when the body itself has to come out.

Stainless steel floor traps and gratings

When people ask for a stainless steel floor trap they usually mean a stainless grating and collar on a plastic body. That is where the metal matters, because the grating is the part that sits in water, soap and cleaning chemicals every day.

  • Ask for the grade. Sansico, a Malaysian floor trap maker, states that its stainless steel gratings and collars are made of SS304, while its plastic gratings and collars are ABS.
  • Plated is not stainless. A chrome-plated grating looks the same on day one and rusts once the plating wears through.
  • Anti-theft versions exist. Gratings that lock into the collar are used in common areas and rented units.
  • Solid brass is the other long-lasting option, and our replacement guide notes it lasts far longer than a thin plated cover.

A stainless grating does not change the seal underneath it. If the complaint is smell or insects, the grating alone will not cure it.

Top access floor traps

A top access floor trap is built so the trap insert can be lifted out from the bathroom floor. On an ordinary trap, a blockage deep in the bend has to be cleared through the grating opening or, in a condo, sometimes from the ceiling below. A top access design lets you take the insert out, clean it and put it back.

  • Sansico describes its Model S3 trap insert as having an EPDM rubber at its bottom as the sealing mechanism.
  • Its S4 model is a top access floor trap with a feature the maker calls a “Zero Water Seal”, aimed at the fast dried-up water seal problem.
  • Its side flow system is a top access floor trap fully concealed in the slab, which the maker says allows a higher false ceiling below or saves the cost of a ceiling.

Brand names are examples, not a recommendation. The useful question for any top access trap is simple: can the insert be lifted out easily, and are spare inserts and seals sold for it?

Anti-odour and anti-cockroach floor traps

A water seal works only while there is water in it. In a bathroom that is used every day, that is fine. In a guest bathroom, a balcony or a yard drain, the water evaporates and the smell and insects come up. Anti-odour floor traps solve that with a part that closes by itself when no water is flowing.

MechanismHow it worksBest forUpkeep
FlapA light flap opens under the weight of water and falls shutBalconies, utility areasClean hair off the hinge
Float or ballA float rises to close the opening when the trap is emptyRarely used bathroomsRinse soap build-up
Spring valveA spring holds the valve shut until water pushes it openDrains with little flowCan stick if neglected
Rubber seal insertA soft seal closes the outlet between flowsRetrofitting an existing trapReplace when the rubber hardens

Anti-cockroach floor traps are usually the same idea with smaller grating openings. They help, but our guide to cockroaches from the floor trap also covers sealing gaps around the trap and baiting, because insects use more than one way in.

Tile insert and design gratings

A tile insert floor trap has a tray instead of a slotted grating. A piece of the floor tile is cut and set into the tray, so the drain almost disappears and water enters through the narrow gap around the edge. Square slotted and patterned stainless gratings sit between the two: more visible, but they take water faster.

  • Tile inserts suit large-format tiles where a round grating would break the pattern.
  • The gap around the insert is smaller than an open grating, so it suits ordinary showers better than heavy rain showers.
  • The tile in the tray must be cut accurately and the tray set exactly at tile level, or the edge catches feet and ponds water.

If the drain is the design feature of a walk-in shower, compare this with a linear drain; our floor trap vs linear drain guide sets out the trade-offs.

Floor trap sizes: measure before you buy

Wikipedia's floor drain entry notes that floor drains usually range from 2 to 12 inches, and most are 4 inches in diameter; they are usually round, but can also be square or rectangular. In practice the size that matters is the one already in your floor, because a new grating or insert has to fit the existing collar and body.

  1. Lift the old grating and take it to the shop, or measure its outside size and the collar it sits in.
  2. Note the shape (round or square) and whether the collar is part of the body or a separate ring.
  3. Check the depth below the grating if you are adding an anti-odour insert, so it does not block the outlet.
  4. For a new floor, decide the trap type before the screed, because the body height sets the falls to it.

Sansico, for example, sells its stainless designs as 6” gratings with matching collars, which is why the collar matters as much as the grating when you shop for a replacement.

Which floor trap for which spot

LocationSensible choiceWhy
Main bathroom, daily usePVC body, stainless grating, water sealThe seal stays topped up; stainless resists rust
Guest bathroomAdd an anti-odour insertThe water seal dries between visits
Shower area with a kerbStandard or top access trapEasy to clear hair from above
Balcony or yardAnti-odour or anti-cockroach insertLong dry spells; insects from the drain
Wet kitchen floorLarger grating that is easy to liftFood scraps and grease need regular clearing

Where a washing machine drains into the floor trap and water comes back up, the cause is usually flow or a blockage rather than the trap type; the washing machine backflow guide covers that case.

What changing a floor trap costs

Changing the grating or adding an insert is a small repair. Changing the body is a floor job, because the tiles, screed and waterproofing around it must be opened and rebuilt. These are ClickBina's published figures (indicative 2026, Klang Valley).

Common Questions

Which is better, a PVC or a stainless steel floor trap?
They are usually used together: a PVC body in the slab with a stainless steel grating on top. PVC does not rust and joins easily to the waste pipe; the stainless grating resists the rust that ruins plated covers.
What is a top access floor trap?
A floor trap whose trap insert can be lifted out from the floor above, so a blockage in the trap can be cleared and the seal cleaned without opening the floor or the ceiling below.
Do anti-odour floor traps really stop the smell?
They help on drains that dry out, because a flap, float or seal closes when no water flows. They need cleaning, since hair and soap can stop them closing.
Can I change the floor trap type without hacking?
You can change the grating or add an insert if it fits the existing collar and body. Changing the body itself means hacking the tiles, re-waterproofing and retiling around it.
What size floor trap do I need?
The one that fits what is already in your floor. Lift the old grating and measure it and the collar, or take it to the shop, because sizes and fittings vary between makers.
How much does it cost to change a floor trap cover?
A cover or insert swap sits in the small-repair range; ClickBina's guides list a basic plumbing call-out or minor repair at RM80–RM250 (indicative 2026, Klang Valley).
Are tile insert floor traps a good idea?
They look clean in large-format tiles, but water enters only through the narrow edge gap, so they suit ordinary showers better than heavy rain showers, and the tile piece must be cut accurately.
