Zebra Blinds vs Roller Blinds
Light, Privacy, Fitting & Price (2026)

Two of the most popular blinds in Malaysian homes, compared room by room.

A roller blind is one sheet of fabric that rolls up; a zebra blind is a continuous loop of fabric with alternating sheer and solid bands, so by moving the bands against each other you switch between filtered daylight and privacy without raising the blind. Zebra blinds suit living and dining rooms; for a bedroom that must go properly dark, a blackout roller blind blocks more light. ClickBina's curtain and blinds guide lists a zebra blind at RM180–RM380 per window and a blackout roller blind at RM180–RM350 (indicative 2026, Klang Valley). A site visit is RM150, waived if you go ahead.

What a zebra blind is

A zebra blind, sold in Malaysia as a Korean blind, day-night blind or combi blind, uses one long piece of fabric that runs down the front of the roller, around a bottom rail and back up behind it. The fabric is woven in horizontal stripes: a sheer band, then a solid band, repeated. When the sheer bands on the front and back line up, you see through them; when a solid band sits in front of a sheer band, the view is closed. A small turn of the chain moves between the two.

A roller blind is simpler. Wikipedia's article on the window blind describes roller blinds as typically made from a polyester fabric wrapped around a plastic or metal roller, raised and lowered with a side chain. The fabric decides everything: sheer or screen fabric filters light, blackout fabric blocks it.

The honest summary: a zebra blind is a privacy and daylight tool, not a blackout tool. If a room must go dark for sleep, pick a blackout roller, or put a zebra blind in front of a blackout curtain.

Light, privacy and heat

The appeal of a zebra blind is the middle position. With the bands offset slightly, you get soft daylight and people outside cannot see in easily during the day. At night, when the room is lit and the street is dark, any sheer band becomes see-through from outside, so close the solid bands fully after dark.

Neither blind is a strong heat barrier on its own. A light-coloured fabric facing the glass reflects some sun; heavy afternoon sun on west-facing glass is better handled with window film or external shading as well. The Wikipedia article notes that blinds can reduce solar gain and provide room darkening or blackout for sleeping, but the fabric choice decides how much.

Inside or outside the window recess

Both types can be fitted inside the recess, with the brackets on the top of the window opening, or outside the recess, on the wall or ceiling above it. Wikipedia notes the roller may be placed at the top of the window recess or outside of the recess.

  • Inside the recess looks neat and leaves the wall clear, but there is always a thin gap of light at each side, and the window handles must not stick out into the blind's path.
  • Outside the recess overlaps the opening, so it blocks more light at the sides and hides an uneven frame; it is the better choice for a bedroom.
  • On a sliding door, fit outside the recess or on the ceiling so the blind clears the door handle.
  • Aluminium frames in older homes are often out of square; the measurer should check the width at the top, middle and bottom.

Measuring and ordering

Blinds are made to measure, so a measuring mistake cannot be fixed afterwards. Wikipedia points out that blinds are generally sold as either ready-made or made to measure, with made-to-measure blinds costing more but fitting the window. For inside-recess blinds, the fabric is made slightly narrower than the opening so it runs freely; for outside-recess blinds, it is made wider than the opening so it overlaps. Decide which side the chain goes on, and whether you want the fabric rolling off the front or the back of the roller.

Zebra blinds also need a decision on the cassette, the cover over the roller. A cassette looks finished and keeps dust off the roll, but it needs a little more space above the window.

How the blinds are installed

Installation is two or three brackets screwed into the frame, wall or ceiling, the blind clipped into them, and the chain safety device fixed to the wall. The fixing surface matters: concrete takes plugs and screws, plasterboard needs the screws to land on framing, and aluminium window frames should not be drilled where that would weaken or leak. If a curtain is also planned for the same window, the curtain track installation guide covers how the track and the blind share the space above the window.

Chains, cords and children

Looped chains are a known danger to small children. Wikipedia's window blind article states that corded window blinds present a strangulation hazard to children, and that cordless blinds reduce the risk. For a child's room or anywhere a cot or sofa stands near the window, ask for a cordless or motorised version, or at least a chain tensioner fixed firmly to the wall so the loop stays taut and high.

Cleaning and living with them

  • Vacuum with a brush head or wipe with a barely damp cloth; do not soak the fabric.
  • Zebra blinds collect dust between the two layers: lower the blind fully and clean both faces.
  • In a steamy bathroom or kitchen, choose a wipe-clean fabric so mould does not settle in the weave.
  • If a blind starts rolling crooked, the fabric has shifted on the roller; it is usually an adjustment, not a new blind.

Common Questions

Are zebra blinds blackout?
Not fully. The solid bands close the view, but light leaks through the band edges and around the sides. For a dark bedroom, choose a blackout roller blind.
Which is cheaper, zebra or roller blinds?
A basic roller blind costs less. ClickBina's guide lists roller blinds from RM80–RM180 per window and zebra blinds at RM180–RM380 (indicative 2026, Klang Valley).
Can people see in through a zebra blind at night?
Through the sheer bands, yes, when the room is lit and outside is dark. Close the solid bands fully after dark.
Should blinds go inside or outside the window recess?
Inside looks neater; outside blocks more light at the sides and clears handles. Bedrooms and sliding doors usually suit outside mounting.
Are zebra blinds hard to clean?
They collect dust between the two layers, so lower them fully and clean both faces with a brush head or a barely damp cloth.
Is a Korean blind the same as a zebra blind?
Yes. Korean blind, zebra blind, day-night blind and combi blind are trade names for the same dual-band design.
Are blind chains safe with young children?
Looped chains are a strangulation risk. Choose cordless or motorised blinds, or fit a chain tensioner firmly to the wall.
