Shower Screen Repair
Hinges, Rollers, Seals & Broken Glass (2026)

Most shower screen problems are hardware. Here is how to tell which part has failed, and what fixing it involves.

A stainless steel hinge clamping a frameless glass shower door against grey wall tiles

Most shower screen faults are hardware, not glass: a hinge that has dropped, rollers that have worn flat, a seal strip that has split, or silicone that has gone black, and each can be fixed without replacing the screen. A cracked or shattered tempered panel is different: tempered glass cannot be cut or re-worked, so a new panel has to be made to size. ClickBina's guides publish shower screen silicone resealing at RM100–RM250, and a sliding-door re-track and roller swap at RM100–RM280 as a comparison for sliding screens (indicative 2026, Klang Valley). A site visit is RM150, waived if you go ahead.

Diagnose before buying parts. A scraping door, for example, can be a worn hinge, a loose wall plug, or a floor that has moved; only one of those is fixed by a new hinge.

Hinged and pivot doors: dropped or sagging

On a frameless hinged screen, the whole weight of the glass door hangs on two or three clamps screwed into the wall. Over time the screws loosen in their plugs, especially if the tiles were drilled without a proper anchor behind, and the door drops a little at the unsupported edge. The first sign is a scrape on the kerb, then the door stops meeting the fixed panel squarely.

  • If the hinge body is sound, re-fixing it with correct anchors and re-levelling the door is often enough.
  • If the hinge's internal cam or spring is worn, the door will not return to closed; replace the hinge with the same fixing pattern so the existing holes in the glass line up.
  • Pivot doors turn on top and bottom pins; a worn pin or a cracked floor socket makes the door wobble and needs the pivot parts replaced.

Hinges must match the glass holes and the door weight. Tempered glass cannot be drilled again after it is made, so a hinge with a different hole pattern will not fit an existing door.

Sliding screens: rollers and tracks

Framed sliding screens run on small rollers at the top or bottom of each panel. Soap scum, hair and limescale build up in the track, the roller bearings seize, and the plastic wheels wear flat. The panel then drags, jumps off the track or rattles. The sliding door roller replacement guide explains how rollers and tracks work; shower screens use the same idea at a smaller scale, and many are top-hung so the weight sits on the top rail.

Clean the track first; many sticky screens run freely after that. If the rollers are worn, they are replaced as a set, and the replacement must match the profile of the screen's frame, which is why the brand or a close look at the old roller helps.

Seals, sweeps and magnetic strips

The clear plastic strips on the edges of a frameless door stop water escaping through the gaps: a bottom sweep, a vertical seal on the hinge side, and often a magnetic strip where the door meets the fixed panel. They yellow, split and stiffen in hot water and cleaning chemicals. Replacement profiles clip onto the glass edge and are sized to the glass thickness, so measure the glass before ordering.

Silicone is a separate job. It seals the fixed panel and the frame to the tiles; when it turns black or peels, water gets behind it. The silicone resealing guide explains why the old bead must be cut out completely before a new one goes on.

Cracked or broken glass: why the panel is replaced

Shower screens are made of tempered (toughened) glass. As Wikipedia's entry on tempered glass explains, tempered glass must be cut to size or pressed to shape before tempering, and cannot be re-worked once tempered; edge polishing and hole drilling are done before tempering. So a chipped or cracked panel cannot be trimmed or patched, and a replacement panel is made to the exact size and hole positions of the old one.

The same entry notes that because of the balanced stresses in the glass, damage to any portion will eventually result in the glass shattering, and that nicked or chipped edges can later develop into larger breaks. A chip on the edge of a shower door is a warning, not a cosmetic mark. The guide to tempered glass that breaks by itself covers the other causes, including nickel sulfide inclusions.

If the glass has shattered

  • Keep everyone out of the bathroom, especially children, and wear shoes.
  • Tempered glass breaks into small granules, but they are still sharp; sweep them up, then vacuum the floor trap and grout lines.
  • If the panel is still standing but crazed, do not touch or lean on it; it can collapse all at once.
  • Tape or cover the opening and do not use the shower until the panel is removed.

Repair or replace the whole screen?

Repair when the glass is sound and the fault is a hinge, roller, seal or silicone. Consider replacing the screen when the aluminium frame is corroded along the bottom channel, when parts for an old sliding screen are no longer made, when more than one panel is damaged, or when the bathroom is being renovated anyway and a different layout is wanted. The shower screen types guide compares framed, semi-frameless and frameless screens for a new install.

What shower screen repair costs

ClickBina's guides publish these related lines (indicative 2026, Klang Valley); the roller lines are for sliding doors and are given for comparison. Hinge replacement and new glass panels depend on the hardware and the panel size, so they are quoted after the screen is seen:

The new-screen lines are there for comparison: if a repair quote approaches the price of a new framed screen, replacing it is often the better use of the money.

Keeping a screen working

  • Squeegee the glass and wipe the track after showers; scale is what wears rollers and seals.
  • Do not hang towels or lean on a hinged door; the hinges carry the full weight of the glass already.
  • Check hinge screws and brackets for movement once or twice a year.
  • Replace yellowed or split seal strips before water starts to escape onto the bathroom floor.

Common Questions

Can a shower screen hinge be replaced without changing the glass?
Usually yes, if the new hinge has the same hole pattern as the glass. Tempered glass cannot be drilled again, so the hinge must match the existing holes.
Why does my frameless shower door drop and scrape?
The hinge screws have loosened in their wall plugs, or the hinge is worn. Re-fixing and re-levelling fixes the first; the second needs a new hinge.
Can a cracked shower glass panel be repaired?
No. Tempered glass cannot be cut or patched after it is made, and a chipped edge can lead to the whole panel shattering. It is replaced with a new panel.
How much does it cost to reseal a shower screen?
ClickBina's silicone resealing guide lists RM100–RM250 for a shower screen or bathtub perimeter (indicative 2026, Klang Valley).
My sliding shower door is hard to move. What is wrong?
Usually a dirty track or worn rollers. Clean the track first; if it still drags or jumps, the roller set is replaced.
Water leaks under my shower door. What should I replace?
The bottom sweep or edge seal strip, sized to the glass thickness. If water escapes where the screen meets the tiles, the silicone needs redoing.
When is it better to replace the whole screen?
When the frame is corroded, parts are no longer made, several panels are damaged, or a repair costs close to a new framed screen.
