Floor Trap Replacement
Hacking Out & Resetting a Broken or Rusty Trap (2026)

A rusty grating is a small swap. A cracked trap body means opening the floor. Here is how to tell, and what it costs.

📍 We serve KL, Selangor & Putrajaya.

New stainless floor trap set in fresh screed with a waterproofing collar where tiles were hacked out

If only the grating or the removable top is rusted or broken, it is a cover swap. If the trap body itself is cracked, corroded, loose or set too high, it has to be hacked out: the tiles and screed around it are broken out, a new trap is set at the right level on the waste pipe, the waterproofing is rebuilt as a collar around it, the area is ponding-tested, then re-screeded and retiled. ClickBina's published figures put a basic plumbing call-out or minor repair at RM80 – RM250; a reset that opens the floor is priced on the hacking, membrane and tiling it needs (indicative 2026, Klang Valley).

What a floor trap does, and why it fails

A floor trap is the round or square drain in a bathroom, yard or wet kitchen floor. It does two jobs: it takes water off the floor, and it holds a small pool of water, the water seal, that stops sewer gas and insects coming back up. It is also the point where the floor's waterproofing has to seal tightly around a pipe, which makes it one of the most leak-prone details in any wet area.

Traps fail in a few predictable ways. Cheap chrome-plated or thin metal gratings rust. Plastic bodies crack when someone stands a heavy item on them or when the screed under them settles. Old cast traps corrode. And many traps were simply set too high or too low by the original builder, so the floor never drains properly.

Not every smell needs a new trap. ClickBina's drain smell guide explains that a dry trap is the commonest cause, and cockroaches coming up the drain have their own fixes in the floor trap cockroach guide.

Cover swap: the small job

If the body of the trap is sound and only the visible top is rusty, broken or missing, the fix is a replacement grating or top ring that fits the existing body. Take the old cover with you, or measure it, because trap sizes and fittings vary. A stainless or solid brass cover lasts far longer than a thin plated one in a wet bathroom.

An anti-odour insert or a trap with a built-in seal can be added at the same time if smells or insects are a problem. None of this involves breaking tiles, so it stays in the small-repair range.

Full reset: when the trap body must come out

A cracked or corroded trap body, a trap that has come loose from the waste pipe, or a trap set at the wrong level cannot be fixed from the top. The trap is embedded in the screed, and the waterproofing membrane is lapped onto it. Replacing it means opening the floor around it.

  1. Check first. If there is any sign of a leak below, have the source confirmed before breaking tiles.
  2. Hack around the trap. Break out the tiles and screed in a neat square around the trap, keeping the waste pipe intact.
  3. Remove the old trap. Cut it free from the waste pipe and clean the pipe end.
  4. Set the new trap. Fit it to the pipe at a level that suits the floor falls, so water runs to it.
  5. Rebuild the waterproofing. Prime, then form a membrane collar around the trap, lapped onto the existing membrane.
  6. Ponding test. Plug the trap, flood the area and leave it before any tile goes back.
  7. Screed and tile. Re-screed to falls, then tile and grout around the trap.

The membrane collar: the detail that decides the job

Most floor trap leaks are not the trap itself but the joint between the membrane and the trap. When the old trap is hacked out, the old membrane around it is broken too. The new membrane has to be sealed to the new trap, usually with a reinforcing band or collar, and overlapped onto the surviving membrane so there is no gap for water to run under the tiles.

ClickBina's floor trap leak guide explains how water travels along a badly sealed trap to the slab and the unit below. If your trap is being replaced because of a ceiling stain downstairs, that collar is the part to ask about.

Ponding test before tiling

A ponding test means blocking the drain, flooding the floor and leaving it, then checking the ceiling below or the slab for damp. It is the only cheap moment to find a fault. Once tiles are down, the next sign of a problem is usually a stain downstairs. ClickBina's bathroom waterproofing requirements guide explains what a proper test looks like.

Getting the level and falls right

A new trap is a chance to fix ponding. If water has always pooled away from the trap, the trap is probably too high or the floor falls the wrong way. Setting the new trap a little lower helps only if the screed around it is also reshaped. Where the whole floor falls wrongly, a local reset will not cure it; the floor needs re-screeding. ClickBina's ponding floor guide covers that larger job, and the floor trap vs linear drain guide covers switching drain types.

Matching the tiles around the trap

Hacking around a trap breaks a small square of tiles. Matching old tiles is the hardest part of the job to get right: the original range may be discontinued, and even the same tile can differ in shade. Ask whether spare tiles were left from the original job, often stored in the house. If not, owners sometimes choose a contrasting square of tiles around the trap on purpose, or retile the shower area.

In a condo, check the management's renovation rules before hacking; even a small patch involves noise and debris.

Common Questions

Can a floor trap be replaced without hacking the tiles?
Only the cover or top piece. If the trap body is cracked, corroded, loose or at the wrong level, the tiles and screed around it have to be broken out.
How much does floor trap replacement cost in Malaysia?
A cover swap sits in the small-repair range; ClickBina's published basic call-out or minor repair is RM80–RM250. A reset is priced on the hacking, membrane and tiling it needs (indicative 2026, Klang Valley).
Why does my floor trap smell even with water in it?
The water seal may be too shallow or the trap body damaged. An anti-odour insert can help; a cracked body needs replacing.
My floor trap grating is rusty. Do I need a new trap?
Usually not. A rusty grating can be swapped for a stainless or brass cover that fits the existing body.
Will replacing the floor trap stop the leak downstairs?
Only if the leak is at the trap. Most trap leaks are at the membrane joint, so the new trap needs a proper membrane collar and a ponding test. Confirm the source first.
Can I match the tiles around a new floor trap?
Sometimes. Spare tiles from the original job are the best match; otherwise a contrasting square or retiling the shower area are common choices.
How much does leak detection cost before a floor trap repair?
ClickBina's leak detection and assessment is RM300–RM800 per visit, charged separately from the repair.
