Cockroaches Coming Out of the Floor Trap
Why It Happens & How to Stop It (2026)

Large cockroaches appearing from the bathroom or yard drain? Here is why they come up and how to close the route without blocking the drain.

Water poured from a steel cup into an open square stainless floor trap recess in grey tiles

Cockroaches that come out of a floor trap are usually American cockroaches living in the drain system, climbing up through a trap that has dried out, a missing or broken grating, gaps around the trap body or an open pipe stub. Keep every trap topped up with water, fit a proper grating or trap insert rather than sealing the drain shut, seal gaps around the trap, and bait near drains. ClickBina's cockroach guide puts a single home gel-baiting treatment at RM150 – RM400 (market estimate 2026, Klang Valley).

Why cockroaches come up through the floor trap

ClickBina's cockroach control guide separates the two common species. German cockroaches ride in on boxes and bags and live in the kitchen. American cockroaches take a different road: they live in the drainage and sewer system and climb up through floor traps, dry gully traps and open pipe stubs, especially after rain.

So if you keep finding large, reddish-brown cockroaches near a bathroom or yard drain, often at night, the drain is the entry point. Spraying the room does little; the answer is at the trap.

Small, pale brown cockroaches in the kitchen cabinets are a different problem. They are breeding indoors, usually near food, warmth and water, and they need a kitchen treatment rather than drain work. Many homes have both at once, so look at where you see them before deciding what to fix. A quick check at night with a torch, a few minutes after switching on the bathroom light, usually shows which route they are using.

The water seal: your first line of defence

Every floor trap holds a small amount of standing water, the water seal, which keeps sewer gas and most crawling insects on the drain side. ClickBina's drain smell guide explains that in a rarely used bathroom, a covered yard or a unit standing empty, that water evaporates in the Klang Valley heat within weeks. The trap is then an open pipe to the sewer, and a smell is often the first sign, with cockroaches close behind.

Pour water into every floor trap in the house regularly, including guest bathrooms, yards, balconies and the wet kitchen. It costs nothing and fixes a large share of cases on its own.

Gratings and anti-cockroach trap inserts

A floor trap needs a grating that stays in place and has openings small enough to stop large insects while still letting water through. Many homes lose the original cover or have one with wide slots. Replacement gratings and trap inserts sold as anti-odour or anti-cockroach usually add a flap, a float or a spring valve that closes when no water is flowing. They help, but they must still let water drain freely and need cleaning, because hair and soap stop the flap closing.

Do not tape, cement or cover a floor trap shut. ClickBina's drain smell guide is clear that a floor trap is a drain: covering it converts a smell into standing water the next time the room floods. A removable insert that you can lift out to clean is the safer choice.

Seal gaps around the trap and pipes

Cockroaches also use the gap around the trap body where it passes through the tiles and slab. A badly formed penetration lets gas and water through as well, so it is worth fixing properly. ClickBina's pipe penetration and floor trap guide explains the detail. Check too for open pipe stubs left after a renovation, the washing machine outlet, and the space under sinks where waste pipes enter walls.

Baiting near drains

Blocking the route stops new arrivals; baiting deals with those already inside. The cockroach guide explains why gel baiting works better than supermarket sprays: cockroaches carry the bait back to their harbourage, while sprays scatter them deeper into walls and cabinets. Bait placed near floor traps, under sinks and behind appliances targets the spots they travel through.

Condos and landed homes: who deals with the drains

In a landed house, the drains and inspection chambers outside are yours to keep clear, and a blocked or broken outside line can push insects back up. In a condo or apartment, the traps inside your unit are yours, but the shared stacks, common drains and refuse areas belong to the management. If several units have the same problem, report it in writing so the JMB or MC treats the common drains as well.

Everyday prevention

  • Refill all floor traps regularly, especially before you travel or when a room is not used.
  • Keep gratings in place and clean hair and soap off them.
  • Wipe up food and grease in the wet kitchen; roaches follow food as well as water.
  • Fix dripping taps and leaks, which give roaches the water they need.
  • Cap or plug unused pipes left after renovation work.

Small flies around drains are a sign of the same organic layer that feeds roaches; see ClickBina's drain fly guide.

Common Questions

Why do cockroaches come out of my bathroom floor trap?
Usually because they live in the drains and the trap's water seal has dried out, the grating is missing or has wide slots, or there is a gap around the trap body.
How do I stop cockroaches coming up the drain?
Refill every floor trap with water regularly, keep a proper grating or trap insert in place, seal gaps around the trap and bait near drains.
Do anti-cockroach floor traps work?
They help, because a flap or valve closes when no water flows. They must still drain freely and need cleaning, or hair and soap stop them closing.
Can I cover my floor trap to keep cockroaches out?
No. A floor trap is a drain; covering it means standing water the next time the room floods. Use a proper grating or insert instead.
How much does cockroach treatment cost?
ClickBina's cockroach guide puts a single home gel-baiting treatment at RM150–RM400 and a quarterly package at RM400–RM900 a year (market estimate 2026, Klang Valley).
Why are there more cockroaches after rain?
Rain fills and disturbs drains and sewers, and cockroaches living there climb up through traps and pipe stubs.
Who is responsible in a condo?
The traps in your unit are yours; shared stacks and common drains belong to the management. Report widespread problems to the JMB or MC in writing.
