Snake or Monitor Lizard in the House
What to Do, Who to Call & How to Proof (2026)

A snake behind the fridge or a monitor lizard in the porch needs a calm first five minutes. Here is what to do, who handles wildlife in Malaysia, and how to stop them coming back.

Monitor lizard walking along a monsoon drain beside a terrace house fence

If a snake or a monitor lizard is in your house, get everyone, especially children and pets, out of that room, close the door, keep watching where it goes from a safe distance, and do not try to catch, corner or kill it. Wildlife disturbance in Peninsular Malaysia is handled by PERHILITAN, the Department of Wildlife and National Parks, which says it acts on complaints within three working days and charges nothing for its help; for an animal inside the house right now, ask your local fire station (Bomba) or Civil Defence (APM) office whether they respond in your area. Afterwards, the lasting fix is proofing: seal gaps under doors (typically RM30 – RM100 a door), cover drains, cut back vegetation and deal with the rats that draw snakes in.

The first five minutes

A snake in the kitchen or a monitor lizard in the porch is frightening, but most bites and scratches happen when someone tries to deal with the animal themselves. The safe sequence is short:

  1. Move people and pets away. Get children, pets and anyone unsteady on their feet out of the room or away from that part of the compound.
  2. Contain it if you can do so without getting close. Close the door to the room, and push a towel against the gap under it. Open an outside door in that room if the animal can leave that way.
  3. Keep watching from a distance. Whoever comes to help needs to know where it went. A snake that disappears behind a cabinet is much harder to find later.
  4. Do not try to catch, trap or kill it. That is when people get bitten, and many wild animals are protected by law.
  5. Call for help, and give the exact location and what the animal looks like.
⚠️ You cannot reliably tell a harmless snake from a venomous one at a glance. Treat every snake inside the house as dangerous, and keep a clear distance until it has been removed.

Who to call: PERHILITAN, Bomba or APM?

This is the question people search for most, and the honest answer depends on how urgent it is:

SituationWho to contactWhat to expect
Wild animal disturbing your home or compoundPERHILITAN (headquarters or the nearest state office), or its online complaint systemInvestigation and action within three working days of the complaint, often sooner; no charge
Snake or monitor lizard inside the house now, people at riskAsk your local fire station (Bomba) or Civil Defence (APM) office whether they respond to these calls in your areaEmergency services attend genuine emergencies; they are not a booking service
Repeated visits from the same drain, garden or empty lotThe management office or JMB in a strata scheme; the local council for public drains and empty landHousekeeping of common areas, drains and overgrown lots
Stray cats or dogs (not wildlife)The local council (PBT)PERHILITAN says strays are outside its jurisdiction

PERHILITAN's own FAQ says that when you make a wildlife disturbance complaint it needs your name, IC number, phone number, address, the location and time of the incident and the species involved. Having that ready, plus a clear description of the animal, speeds things up. Its headquarters line is listed on the FAQ page in the sources below.

Why snakes come into homes

Snakes do not come in looking for people. They come for food, water, shade and shelter, and a house with a compound can offer all four:

  • Rats and frogs. A rodent problem is a snake invitation. Rats around bins, drains and storerooms draw snakes that hunt them.
  • Cool, dark hiding places such as piles of timber, stacked pots, old tiles, bushy ground cover and cluttered storerooms.
  • Drains and gaps. Open drains, gaps under doors, holes around pipes and broken air vents are entry routes.
  • Heavy rain and nearby clearing. Flooding and land clearing next door push animals out of their usual cover.

Homes next to rivers, forest edges, oil palm or empty overgrown lots see more visits, which is why neighbourhood housekeeping matters as much as what you do inside your own gate.

Monitor lizards (biawak) in the compound

The large lizard walking across a Klang Valley garden or climbing out of a monsoon drain is usually a monitor lizard. They live along drains, ponds and rivers, and they are drawn to food scraps, rubbish, pet food, eggs and small animals.

  • Do not corner one or try to grab its tail. A frightened monitor lizard can bite and lash with its tail, and bites can become badly infected.
  • Give it an exit. Most will leave on their own if the gate or door is open and nobody blocks the way.
  • Take away the reason it came: close bins, stop leaving pet food out and clear food waste near the drain.
  • If one keeps returning or has got inside the house, report it as a wildlife disturbance.

Snake-proofing a house: what actually works

There is no spray that keeps snakes away reliably. Proofing is about removing reasons to come and closing ways in:

MeasureWhy it helps
Seal gaps under outside and yard doorsThe gap under a door lets in insects, rats and small snakes from the yard
Cover drains and floor traps; repair broken gratingsDrains are a highway for rats, snakes and monitor lizards
Seal holes around pipes, cables and aircon penetrationsSmall gaps at ground level are enough for a small snake
Cut grass short and trim shrubs away from wallsSnakes avoid open ground where they can be seen
Clear rubbish, timber and pot stacksRemoves hiding places close to the house
Control ratsTakes away the food snakes are hunting
Close bins and bring pet food indoorsRemoves the food that draws monitor lizards and rats

Our door bottom seal guide explains which doors to seal and which should keep a gap, and our rat control guide covers finding and sealing rodent entry points.

Keeping the garden and compound unattractive

In the Klang Valley, grass, weeds, hedges and creepers grow all year, so a tidy compound becomes cover in weeks. A regular routine does more than a big clear-up once a year: short grass along the fence line, shrubs kept off the walls, no creepers bridging from a tree to the roof, and a clear strip around the house.

If the garden is more than you can keep on top of, a garden maintenance contract keeps it on a schedule, and overhanging branches that touch the roof are a job for tree pruning.

Condos and gated estates

In strata buildings and gated communities, sightings usually trace back to shared areas: landscaped slopes, monsoon drains, bin centres and the edge of the development. Report every sighting to the management office with the time and place, and ask for common-area drains, bins and vegetation to be looked at. A pattern of reports is what moves a JMB to act.

What proofing costs

There is no price for removing an animal on this page; that is a wildlife matter. The proofing work afterwards is ordinary home maintenance, and these are indicative Klang Valley figures for 2026 from our door seal, rat control and garden maintenance guides:

Common Questions

Who do I call for a snake in the house in Malaysia?
Wildlife disturbance is PERHILITAN's responsibility; contact its headquarters or nearest state office, or its online complaint system. For a snake inside the house right now, ask your local Bomba or APM office whether they respond in your area. Keep your distance and watch where it goes meanwhile.
Does PERHILITAN charge to remove wildlife?
No. PERHILITAN's FAQ says no fee is charged for its help or services with wildlife disturbance.
How fast does PERHILITAN respond?
Its FAQ says it investigates and acts within three working days of receiving a complaint, and that most cases are dealt with immediately once the information is received.
What should I do if a monitor lizard comes into my house?
Move people and pets away, open an outside door so it can leave, and do not corner it or grab its tail. If it keeps returning or will not leave, report it as a wildlife disturbance.
How do I stop snakes coming into my house?
Seal gaps under outside doors and around pipes, cover drains, keep grass short and shrubs off the walls, clear hiding places and control rats, which snakes hunt.
Do snake repellents work?
There is no spray or powder that reliably keeps snakes away. Removing food and hiding places and closing entry points is what works.
Who deals with stray cats and dogs?
The local council. PERHILITAN's FAQ says stray cats and dogs are outside its jurisdiction.
