If the floor floods every time the machine drains, the pipe cannot keep up. Here is how to find out why.

If water wells up out of the floor trap every time the washing machine drains, the drain after the trap cannot carry the water as fast as the machine pumps it out. The usual causes are lint, hair and soap scum narrowing the trap or the branch pipe, a hose pushed too far into the trap, or a blockage further down that the machine's surge simply reveals. Clean the grating and trap first; if it still backs up, the pipe needs clearing. ClickBina's published market estimate for a floor-trap clear is RM120 – RM350 (2026, Klang Valley).
A washing machine does not trickle its water away. Its pump pushes a full drum of water out in a short burst. A floor trap and its branch pipe that cope easily with a shower can be overwhelmed by that surge if the pipe is partly narrowed, laid too flat, or already carrying water from somewhere else. The water has nowhere to go but back up through the grating.
That is why the problem often appears slowly: the pipe narrows over months with lint and soap, and one day the surge is more than it can take. It is also why the floor may look perfectly dry the rest of the time.
| What you see | What it usually means | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Only the trap the hose drains into overflows | That trap or its short branch is narrowed | Clean the grating and trap; check the hose position |
| A different trap nearby bubbles or overflows | The traps share a branch and the blockage is after the junction | The shared pipe needs clearing |
| Several traps, the toilet gurgles too | A blockage further down the main line | Main line or outdoor drain clearing |
| In a condo, water rises when neighbours use water too | The shared stack may be involved | Report it to the management |
| Water on the floor but the trap looks clear | A leak at the hose, the inlet or the machine itself | Check the hose connections and the machine |
Watch one full drain cycle with the grating off and a torch ready. Where the water rises, and how quickly it goes down afterwards, tells you most of what you need to know.
Avoid pouring strong acid or caustic drain cleaners into a floor trap that keeps backing up. They rarely clear lint, they can damage older pipes and seals, and they make the job dangerous for whoever clears it next. If cleaning the trap does not fix it, the blockage is further along.
Where the hose goes matters. ClickBina's guide to relocating a washing machine drain point quotes manufacturers' manuals, not a Malaysian rule, for the drain hose height: at least 60 cm above the floor, and at most 90 cm or 100 cm depending on the maker. A hose set too low, or pushed too far into the pipe, lets water siphon out while the machine is filling.
The same guide makes the key point for this problem: if the only nearby drain is a floor trap, the hose can hook over it, but that trap then takes a full drain cycle at once and must be able to cope without flooding the floor. A dedicated standpipe with its own trap is the more reliable arrangement.
If the trap is clean and the water still rises, the narrowing is in the pipe. A plumber can rod the branch, or hydro-jet the line where lint and scum have built up along its length. ClickBina's blocked drain guide explains why a snake alone is often temporary on a greasy or scummy pipe, and why a blockage that keeps coming back usually points to the pipe itself: its fall, its size or a damaged section.
After any clearing, test it the same way the problem shows itself: run the washing machine through a full drain cycle with the grating off and watch the trap. If the water stays below the grating and drains away quickly, the pipe is clear; if it still rises, the job is not finished.
In a condo, a blockage inside your unit's own pipework is yours, but one in the shared stack or common sewer serving several units is for the management, as ClickBina's blocked drain guide sets out. If water rises in your trap when neighbours above use water, report it rather than paying to clear your own trap repeatedly.
In a landed house, check the outdoor drains and the inspection chambers. The same guide notes that the connection from the house to the boundary is the owner's responsibility, while the public sewer beyond is the utility's.
If water has been spilling onto the floor for a while, check the waterproofing around the trap, especially upstairs or in a condo. ClickBina's floor trap leak guide explains how water finds its way past a trap into the ceiling below.
