A gurgle is your drain telling you air cannot move the normal way. Here is how to read it, and when it needs clearing.
📍 We serve KL, Selangor & Putrajaya.

A gurgle is air bubbling through the water in a trap or toilet. It means air is being pushed or sucked through the drain because water cannot flow away freely or because the drain cannot draw air from a vent. A gurgle from one fixture after it drains usually points to a partial blockage close by; gurgling at several fixtures, or a toilet that gurgles when another fixture drains, points to the main line, a blocked vent or, in a condo, the shared stack. Do not ignore it: a gurgling drain often blocks fully later. ClickBina's published price to clear a sink, floor trap or shower is RM120 – RM350 (indicative 2026, Klang Valley).
Every sink, shower, floor trap and toilet has a water seal: a small pool of water in a bend that stops sewer gas coming back into the house. When water rushes down a drain, it pushes air ahead of it and pulls air behind it. In a healthy system that air moves through the pipes and out through a vent. When it cannot, the air forces its way through the nearest water seal instead, and you hear it bubble.
So a gurgle is a pressure message, not a noise problem. The questions are where the air is being forced through, and why it cannot move the normal way. The answers decide whether this is a simple local clear or a problem in a shared pipe.
| What you hear | Likely cause | First check |
|---|---|---|
| One sink or trap gurgles as it empties, and drains slowly | Partial blockage in that fixture's branch | Clean the trap and waste; clear the branch |
| Toilet gurgles when the basin or shower drains | Blockage or poor venting in the shared branch | Run fixtures one at a time and listen |
| Several fixtures gurgle and drain slowly together | Blockage in the main line | Open the inspection chamber outside, if landed |
| Gurgling when someone upstairs flushes (condo) | Shared stack partly blocked or poorly vented | Ask neighbours on the same column; tell management |
| Gurgling and slow drains only in heavy rain | Rainwater in the sewer, or a partly blocked private line | Check whether it clears after the rain |
| Floor trap gurgles when the washing machine empties | Branch too small or partly blocked for the discharge | Watch whether water rises in the trap |
Write down which fixture gurgles, what was draining at the time, and whether anything drains slowly. That short note does more for a quick diagnosis than any description of the sound.
Most gurgling comes from a drain that is partly blocked. Water still gets past, but slowly, so air is trapped and pushed back through the seals. In kitchens the cause is usually grease and food. In bathrooms it is hair, soap and sand, and in yards it is lint from the washing machine and leaves.
A partial blockage tends to get worse. If one fixture gurgles and is getting slower, it is a warning before a full block. ClickBina's blocked drain guide covers where drains usually block in Malaysian homes, and the kitchen sink guide covers the grease problem in detail.
Drain pipes need air as well as water. In landed houses the drain system is usually vented through a pipe that rises above the roof; in high-rise buildings the vent runs alongside or within the soil stack. If a vent is blocked by leaves, nests or debris, or if a renovation added fixtures without proper venting, a draining fixture can suck the water out of a nearby trap. That is why a toilet may gurgle when the basin next to it empties, and why the room may smell afterwards.
A vent problem is suspected when there is no sign of a blockage but traps still gurgle and lose their water. Roof vents are a job for someone with safe access. Where the vent pipe passes through the roof, it can also leak; the roof pipe and vent leak guide covers that.
In a condo, your bathroom and kitchen drains join a vertical stack shared with the units above and below. If that stack is partly blocked, the units on the lower floors hear gurgling first, especially at busy times when many units shower and flush at once. Gurgling in your toilet when the upstairs unit flushes is a classic sign.
The stack is usually common property, so report it to management with the times you heard it. ClickBina's condo sewer stack guide explains who is responsible and how a stack blockage is cleared.
If the gurgling and slow draining happen only during heavy rain, rainwater is probably getting into the sewer and filling it, or a partly blocked private line is being pushed over the edge. In bad cases the toilet water rises before it drains. ClickBina's guide to sewage backing up in heavy rain explains how to tell your pipe from the public sewer.
A washing machine empties a lot of water quickly. If it discharges into a floor trap or a small branch, that rush can push air back through other traps and make them gurgle, or make water rise out of the floor trap. Lint build-up in the trap makes it worse. ClickBina's washing machine floor trap guide covers that specific problem.
Avoid strong drain chemicals. They rarely clear a real blockage, can damage older pipes, and make the job hazardous for whoever clears it next.
The fix follows the cause. A local blockage is cleared at the fixture or branch with hand tools or a drain snake. A main-line blockage is cleared from the inspection chamber, and a line that keeps blocking is inspected with a drain camera and cleaned with high-pressure water jetting. A vent problem is fixed by clearing the vent or correcting the venting. These are ClickBina's published ranges for the clearing and inspection work (indicative 2026, Klang Valley).
